  1. Guardian Winter is absolutely a real character, original name Vintrinn.
  2. Who was first born post-Darkstalker as a royal illegitimate dragonet with no recognized claim to the throne, despite having royal ties.
  3. And was a very lonely and love-starved dragonet growing up.
  4. Dealing with social rejection (being illegitimate) and classism (being baseborn).
  5. And was always taught their place was as a servant to the throne.
  6. And told that they would never escape. That being a royal illegitimate dragonet meant they would always be tied to the duty of serving the Ice Kingdom.
  7. The only solace they had outside being a grouchy, miserable guardsdragon was... animus magic.
  8. And even that was cold comfort, for if they knew...they'd just restrict their use of it.
  9. So they took their jollies off taking and stealing from poorer families through magic, because the Ice Kingdom is full of toxicity and punching downward.
  10. Basically, they were the Grinch, being bitter, misanthropic and mean-spirited. (And considering illegitimate prejudice, that was used against them, as they said "her baseborn nature makes her ill-tempered, not regal or dignified as us" even though the nobility were just as much buttholes, if not more.)
  11. And, well... it took awhile for Vintrinn to realize that picking on poor dragon parents for kicks meant making life harder for dragonets like him back then... yet, family members did not lash out on each other. They kept together stronger and tighter and told themselves that, no matter how much was stolen, they'd still have each other. And, after a certain point, Vintrinn realized this wasn't fun. This was terrible and cruel.
  12. And realized that being dutiful to the IceWing throne was going to turn them toxic all over. That there was cruelty baked into the system and protecting it was no longer something they could commit to, even begrudgingly.
  13. So they ran away from the Palace, enchanted a cloak and sewed up a sack and magicked it up and started to give back to the poor and impoverished.
  14. Because their life sucked because of the casual, apathetic cruelties of the Ice Kingdom and they're ashamed of the little crapsack they were, wanting to give back so that they can banish that worse dragon away, make up for their past pettiness and do their best to protect and love all the dragonets, big and small.
  15. The enchantments have eaten away at Vintrinn's memory. They made sure the cloak and the sack were one-time enchantments, but they costed a lot... and Vintrinn gave it willingly:
  16.
  17. "Take my memories of my mother, and the feelings that went with them. I do not want to know them at all. Take the ache in my throat when I think of that dragon I loved so fiercely, take all the sharp-edged, bright-colored days I recall with her. Take their brilliance and leave me but the shadows of what I saw and felt. Let me recall them without cutting myself on their sharpness. Take my hurt that I never knew my father, take my hours of obsessing over what foods or hobbies we could've enjoyed, had we met and never did truly. Take my grief and painful nights knowing I would never be loved by those who should've loved and defended me most."
  18.
  19. Vintrinn's life would've been so much different, had those who should've loved them did.
  20. But those dragons never did.
  21. And never wanted to.
  22. Because what worth was a baseborn's life?
  23. I think that's the great crime in Vintrinn's life that they made a mission to make sure it wouldn't happen to any dragonet: a failure of love and protection.
  24. And that's why they turned themselves into Guardian Winter, a symbol greater than just a royal baseborn, born to be a doomed dead-end of succession politics.
  25. So no other dragonet would know that terrible loneliness like they did back when they were a dragonet.
