  1. the hero of our story is roman wright, a plucky young lawyer who's loyal, determined, and, in all honesty, a bit of a dumbass. he has his law degree, and works under cecil fey, a respectable lawyer. his first case goes well - his childhood friend, remus butz, was framed for the murder of his, ahem, *friend*, remy stone, but roman got him cleared of all charges. his next case, however, is for the murder of cecil fey, his close friend, mentor, and boss. the accused is the lawyer's little brother, patton fey, and the prosecutor is a man by the name of logan edgeworth. they battle in court, and logan is more ruthless than roman would have ever expected. he wins, though, and the offices that once belonged to cecil are now roman's, with patton working as his assistant. their next case is also against logan, and though he's still ruthless, logan manages to see that the true killer in the case isn't the accused, and works together with roman to prove ash vasquez guilty. after the trial, when roman and patton are celebrating, logan approaches them. he curses roman for ever returning into his life, claiming that he's now saddled with 'unnecessary feelings' now that roman is around again. patton raises an eyebrow, but roman convinces him to let it be; he's not talking about that, not yet.

  3. the next case, and they're not going against logan this time. that is because this time, logan is the accused. roman, alarmed at this, begs logan to let him defend him, aided by the pleas of patton and detective emile gumshoe, a close friend of logan's. despite logan's repeated refusal, they investigate anyway, and even though things look horrendously bleak, roman, patton, and emile trust that logan wouldn't do such a thing as murder. eventually, logan begrudgingly allows them to take on the case, but even though he makes it clear that he's not jumping for joy at being represented by a rookie lawyer, he's smiling. flash foward to the day of the trial, and logan begins to tell them about the prosecutor they're up against; a man called manfred von karma, who i despise to include in this story. according to logan, von karma was his mentor when it came to prosecuting, and he's never lost a case in 40 years - he's ruthless. patton cheerfully suggests that maybe von karma took on the case on purpose, to let roman win so that logan would be found not guilty. logan laughs harshly at the thought.

  5. the trial starts, and von karma has full control over the case - he objects to every little thing roman brings up in order to prove him wrong beyond a shadow of a doubt, and it seems that the judge is too afraid of him to do anything. roman worries for logan - he's noticeably uncomfortable around von karma, in a way he hasn't been with anyone before. however, roman doesn't have time to mull over that - he's busy having his ass handed to him by von karma. still, he manages to prove that some photo evidence vital in the case against logan is wrong, and they get an extension - another day to prove logan innocent. the next day, von karma predicts that the case will be resolved in three minutes flat. they come close to the self-imposed time limit by the time logan is declared guilty, but all of a sudden, remus butz bursts into the court room, claiming to be a witness. luckily for roman, remus is too defiant and flippant to be manipulated by von karma, and his testimony proves vital in proving logan innocent. however, this court of law operates on 'guilty until someone else is proven guilty', so they're begrudgingly given another extension to find the killer. while roman and patton are thanking remus for testifying and proving logan innocent, patton asks roman: why is he so certain of logan's innocence, anyway?

  7. cue flashback! roman is nine, a scared little kid, and his class has just come to the conclusion that he stole lunch money from the new kid, logan edgeworth. they gang up on him, yelling and screaming about how he shouldn't be allowed to play with them, how he's a dirty little thief. the teacher makes him apologise to logan, but just before roman can do so, logan objects. he proves that roman couldn't have done it, using real evidence and logic like his lawyer father taught him to, and remus backs him up, insulting the class for being so quick to gang up on logan. after that incident, the trio became good friends, until suddenly, one day, logan moved away without warning. roman tried to contact him, but he got no answer. however, a good many years later, well into college, roman stumbled across a magazine article about logan. the article called him the Demon Prosecutor, claiming that he falsified evidence and was merciless in his objections in order to sustain his perfect record. his eyes were cold, sad. roman almost didn't recognise the man in the article - this surely couldn't be about lo, his childhood friend who would do anything to reach the truth, who wanted to become a defense attorney to help people like his dad! however, he had no choice but to believe it. and so, roman tried to get back in touch with logan, to see what went wrong, through every means available! logan never replied. then, a lightbulb moment; if roman became a defense attorney, logan would have to face him some day, even if it was only on opposite sides of the court! immediately, he changed from an arts major to a law major, in the name of the boy he'd known for a year as a child. as roman finishes his story, remus looks torn between crying and laughing: wow, roman, i never knew that the class trial had meant so much to you! patton chimes in: you're such a good friend! changing your whole career path to see if he's alright, now that's dedication. remus whispers something to roman about that being a little too much dedication for logan to be seen as only a friend to him, and it earns him a kick in the shin and a glare from roman, though his cheeks are flushed as he glares.

  9. during the last day of this investigation, another case comes up, one almost 15 years old, the statue of limitations running out in mere days. the victim was a certain defense lawyer - thomas edgeworth, logan's father, killed in a courtroom elevator, and logan was one of only 3 people at the scene of the murder. when they try to get at more of the case files than emile gives them, however, von karma crashes the party with a tazer, electrocutes both patton and roman, and takes all of evidence on the old case, leaving roman and patton in the dust. eventually, though, the sole suspect of the old case was found guilty as the killer in the current case, and it proves both logan innocent in the current case and the killer innocent in the old case, the suspicion of which cost him his job and his reputation.
  10.
  11. the verdict is passed down on the current case: logan isn't guilty. but just as everything seems like it might be over, an objection rings throughout the courtroom. roman's heart sinks as he recognises the voice as logan's. your honour! he claims. though i might not have killed joan hammond, i am most certainly not innocent. the judge leans back in surprise as patton asks him what he means. your honour, if the previous suspect was innocent, and i and my father were the only others remaining in the elevator at the time, then i must have been the one who killed my father. the room erupts into a cacophany of noise, and roman resists the urge to scream. logan was so close to being free, dammit! von karma latches onto this confession, and makes sure logan is tried for the crime he has admitted to. logan goes along with von karma's plan, seemingly not caring that the punishment for murder is the electric chair. however, roman pushes through it - the recurring nightmare of logan's time in the elevator, throwing a gun towards his father, a scream echoing out afterwards, swampy from the haze of oxygen-deprivation and memory loss, is dismissed as nothing more than the nightmare it is. roman makes a point of the fact that though the gun fired twice, only one bullet was recovered. when the judge asks roman where the other bullet went, he's silent. von karma starts gloating, claiming that the defense can't move forward if it doesn't have proof of anything. then, all of a sudden, roman smirks. he clarifies the events that happened before the murder - thomas was the defense attorney in a case against von karma, and he managed to land von karma with a penalty - the first and only of his entire career. he posits that von karma was the one to kill thomas, and it's not unfounded. von karma bristles, but he laughs it off - what evidence does the defense have? what could he possibly have to do with this?
  12.
  13. roman points out the broken glass window on the elevator, and claims that the bullet logan fired hit the window. the scream he heard came from outside the elevator, and, when the doors opened, one very pissed and very wounded von karma was left staring at thomas edgeworth, out cold from oxygen deprivation and lying next to a gun. von karma laughs, and it's a forced, difficult sound. patton leans towards roman almost subconciously, given great reason to be wary of the man. 'so, what?' von karma asks. 'did i just have the bullet removed?' roman pauses, before shaking his head no. von karma is perfect - that's his thing. a perfect record when it comes to prosecuting, perfectly smooth trials without this tug of war that roman's usually consisted of. bullet removal would leave a scar, one that von karma couldn't afford to have. however, roman begins as he pulls a fucking metal detector from under his desk, they can check for the bullet, can't they. and oh, even if an actual bullet isn't present within von karma, he looked about ready to start sweating them. he agrees to the search, at the judge's insistance, and the metal detector beeps once they reach his shoulder. roman looks smug as logan looks to his mentor, horrified. von karma fights a little more, but his composure is all but gone, and eventually, he lets out a hoarse scream as he bashes his head to his desk in frustration. if logan had looked horrified before, then right about now, he looked furious. he yells to the prosecutor; that's the scream that's been haunting his dreams for fifteen odd years! as the bailiff hauls the manic prosecutor away, the judge stares awkwardly after them. there is a moment of silence before he declares logan not guilty, and he congratulates both logan and roman as he leaves the stand he's been sitting behind.
  14.
  15. roman and patton looked to each other before sharing a triumphant smile as they walk out of the courtroom and into the defendant's lobby. after a few moments, logan follows. he looks exhausted - moreso than roman had ever seen him - but he looks... oddly happy. resigned, maybe? closure, roman decided. he looked like he'd gotten closure. as patton chatted excitedly with emile, hugging each other in glee that logan was found innocent, roman approached the elusive prosecutor. the defense smiled softly at his rival. surprisingly, logan smiled back, the rare sight a beautiful one. there was silence between them for a moment, before logan opened his mouth, thanking roman profusely for proving him innocent. roman protested - of course he was going to, it was *logan*! did he really expect roman to believe that he was capable of something like that? logan chuckled sheepishly, eyes meeting roman's. they were warm, and filled with turmoil, but mostly, they were happy.
  16.
  17. of course, the quiet moment between them wouldn't last - patton and emile would drag them both into a big group hug, one that logan would pretend to hate, but that he desperately needed. remus would crash the party, ruffling logan's hair and calling him nicknames as he exaggerated how big of a role he had played in declaring logan's innocence. roman would chuckle at the sight, of logan glaring daggers at him, before remus makes a sudden noise and reaches into his pocket. remus would give logan an envelope, filled with exactly the same amount of money that had been stolen from him all the way back when they were nine. roman would chase remus around the lobby, angry that he'd never owned up to it, and logan would join patton and emile in laughing at the sight. once the laughter died down, roman would ask logan if he would like to come out and celebrate with them - burgers for everyone, on him - and logan would take roman's outstretched hand and say yes. they would hang out at the burger place, loud conversation permeating the air around their table, and logan would catch roman's eye at emile's latest silly impression and roll his eyes, but roman would know it was fond. later, going out would become a habit, and though they loved their friends dearly, roman and logan would think that some alone time between childhood friends was needed. it wouldn't all be happy - logan would vent to roman about how von karma had taken him in after his father had died, and how the man raised Thomas' son poorly purely out of revenge, while roman held him tightly. roman, in turn, would hesitantly tell logan about his ex - a girl who not only gave him a necklace fashioned from evidence from a murder, but tried to kill him, and when that failed, she framed him. roman would cry about how she poisoned his fond memories of being an arts major, and how it had taken so long to get back into creating. logan would awkwardly pat roman on the arm as he cried about how insufferably infatuated he was with her, and he would weigh his options and decide that his boyfriend took priority over his dignity. things would look up, though - six years after they'd reunited, logan would lead roman on a scavenger hunt that ended with a ring, and roman would say yes. they'd laugh and cry and bicker and love.
  18.
  19. but, for now, they didn't need any of that. roman shot a small smile towards logan, and it was returned in kind.
