  1. >Looking back, you don't know what you were so afraid of.
  2. >She has been a shining beacon of hope in your life.
  3. >A lot of the tension between you two came from denying your feelings for one another.
  4. >When you finally took a chance that tenth night and embraced it, everything started to look up.
  5. >You even moved in together a few weeks ago.
  6. >It was nice to stop living out of your office, and you helped turn her apartment into something that was actually homey.
  7. >It's not a perfect life. It doesn't work out like a fairytale, there's no happily ever after.
  8. >But she's doing better. You're doing better.
  9. >There are still low nights. Still dark thoughts. Still anxiety.
  10. >But they don't come as frequently as they used to. You help each other. Gradually, you are both gaining more faith in the belief that you are unconditionally loved.
  11. >Eri hasn't stopped self-harming; it's not something you can flip off like a switch.
  12. >But she's using the rubber band more, and cutting less frequently.
  13. >Still, you're always there to wash away the blood when she falls. You never judge her when she falls. You never judge her when she relapses. You know she's doing her best.
  14. >She even has a job now.
  15. >When you got together, and it showed no signs of falling apart, she began to doubt her special talent.
  16. >There was no heartbreak in sight, which didn't make sense to her.
  17. >But you stuck with her, helped her process it, figure out what it meant. Neither of you believed the relationship was doomed, which was refreshingly optimistic on both your parts.
  18. >It took a while, but Eri finally got her breakthrough.
  19. >Turns out her talent isn't suffering.
  20. >It's empathy.
  21. >She had to get her heart broken, had to feel that pain herself, to learn what it was, and how it affects others.
  22. >You checked in with the Princesses shortly after. They wanted an update.
  23. >When you told them you were together, they weren't even remotely surprised. It's like they knew all along.
  24. >Luna had that look in her eye you'll never forget. A look that said "I know I don't understand what you're going through, but I understand what she means to you."
  25. >She was happy you'd found someone. Somepony.
  26. >You two explained your discussions to the princesses. Told them about Eri's breakthrough.
  27. >And it just sort of clicked for them.
  28. >On the spot, they knew what Equestria needed. Because Eri's not the only one who needs help.
  29. >Ponies need someone they can turn to in their times of need. Friendship is magic, but not infallible. There's not always going to be a friend around for everyone at every time.
  30. >All over the world, there are ponies that need guidance with relationships, stress, or any other of a million different problems they might have going on their lives.
  31. >They need someone who understands pain and suffering, and has the emotional capacity to explain that they're not alone.
  32. >Because in their darkest hour, everyone deserves a sympathetic ear.
  33. >That's how Miss Eri became Equestria's first therapist.
