- BACKGROUND: Hwang Jiyeon was born in Busan,Korea. At the age of 5, her parents abandoned her on the doorstep
- of an orphanage, where she spent the next 13 years. During this time she was bullied, tormented and forced to work heavy hours doing hard labour for no pay to “repay her debts” of... well, she didn’t know.
- When she turned 18, she was thrown to the streets, spitefully being told she can survive on her own. She was homeless and desperate for help. Due to her not being able to study, because of her working, she was set back a year in school and therefore snuck into the school at night and slept in the janitor’s closet. On the streets she would write lyrics and try to sing, thinking it would help get her money. It didn’t. Then she tried to rap. Months went by and she quickly she got more and more money by busking and got quite a bit of recognition. One day, a YG scout noticed her rapping and asked her to audition. She did and it was successful, and due to her circumstances was relocated to YG headquarters and was given a place in the dorms.

- Jiyeon is the epitome of sarcasm. She doesn’t really care about anyone’s feelings and doesn’t
- care how you take her comments. This makes people think that she is cold and heartless. Her
- sarcasm is one of the many layers to her personality. Overall she is pretty much 90% sarcasm.
- ANTI-SOCIAL | “Socialising is a no-no.”
- Whenever there is a social situation, never expect Jiyeon to be anywhere near. Not only does she
- not like people and unwanted conversations, she hates crowded spaces. So you could say she’s a
- lone wolf. Many people would spend their free time eating out, shopping and going to parties.
- Jiyeon would instead, visit old and abandoned buildings,libraries or lock herself in her room
- and write lyrics.

- After everything that Jiyeon has been through, it’s in her nature to believe that the worst will
- always happen in any situation. Even when YG scouted her, she initially thought that she was
- being scammed. But she went out of her comfort zone, which she rarely does, and got the best
- experience of her life.

- Jiyeon doesn’t have any friends and to be honest, doesn’t want any. She’s simply fine on her
- own. If someone was to try and befriend her at school, she would reply with a sarcastic comment
- along with a cold stare. Why does she need a friend if she’s survived without any for the past 18 years of
- her life?

- Underneath her many negative and unwelcoming layers, there are many layers to her that are positive and one
- them are her caring side. In the orphanage, she was usually given the responsibility of caring for the
- younger children. She developed this caring side only for younger children, so you can say that children
- are her weakness.
