  6. The capital of the Eathouvell Empire, situated on an island within a vast lake in the Elven territory of Adonia. Connected to land by a silver bridge, this Kingdom takes pride in its ties to nature, its sturdy, stone architecture mingling with the gentle, vibrant flora. Its Queen, Estel Daedheldes, has established an invisible, magic barrier with the aid of a witch’s sorcery to protect her citizens from those with wicked, harmful intentions, yet the barrier allows right of passage for friendly visitors and traveling merchants, among other good-natured folk. Rich or poor, all residents live in harmony without any social barricades, and most find this arrangement to be quite acceptable as it lets all classes socialize and learn about each other. Whether you live here, or if you're just visiting, there's plenty to do and many beautiful sights to see here in the Kingdom.

  11. The wide, central thoroughfare of Eathouvell is a river today, coursing thick with a liquid mass of the capital's citizens which spills out even as it meets the main gates of the city. The metropolis is no stranger to the strange, yet heads still turn, and the crowd parts, as the bristling fur of Thrax, a large, black direwolf, reaches the streets. Seated upon the back of the great beast is a young faun, wide eyed, with small scrapes and bruises pock marking his arms and tired eyes beneath his mane of golden hair. Trevan sinks forward, nestling the wolf's fur as it paces onward into the city, and the head of a small, brown rat reaches out from the saddlebags at the wolf's side to lick the side of his cheek.
  12.
  13. "Bartholomew," the child whispers, as the world turns black.
  14.
  15. The wolf treads on despite its own clear wounds, the child dozing on its back.
  16.
  17. The crowd closes behind them as the huge frame of the wolf skulks through the streets, the strangers too conspicuous to go unnoticed by the murmuring cityfolk.

  19. Amongst the packed crowd lies a small band of Eathouvell’s finest, each dressed in the usual silver armor. To say they stand out from the crowd would be an understatement - they catch the eyes of nearly everyone they pass. Some citizens smile, some wave, others come to greet them personally - such is the life for the Royal Guards who watch over the beloved capital. But, while most see bravery, loyalty, and honesty in the knights, there is one who would disagree with those traits being used for her men. One whose eye has been twitching since they left the castle walls.
  20.
  21. “Okay, but seriously, does anyone know why the Queen had to send us ?” one of the men asks. “I thought we were supposed to be on guard duty for the palace. Now they’re changing shifts ?”
  22.
  23. “Yeah,” another pipes up from the back of their formation, “and why should we even be out in the first place ? The barrier keeps all evil-doers out, anyway.”
  24.
  25. “Kinda dull when it’s so peaceful around here - I’ve been itchin’ for a fight.” The man who utters this shifts a piece of straw from one side of his mouth to the next. “But I guess seein’ a jester or musician will have to cure my boredom.”
  26. “Will you guys shut your traps already ?!” the woman at the front of the pack barks. With one swing, the large ax she holds on her shoulders is thrust into the ground by her feet, creating a small shockwave that ceases her mens’ movements and effectively hushes them. “Our Queen ain’t payin’ yas to complain about your job, and I ain’t paid nearly enough to listen to it. We were given patrol duty to make sure the citizens were happy and healthy, not ordered to see a traveling circus.” As she turns toward the rest of the group, the men seize in their positions, but are unable to calm their quivering nerves. Her gaze radiates rancor and indifference; it’s a stare they’re familiar with, but one they are unable to become accustomed to. “I hear yas whine one more time, the ground won’t be the only thing my ax goes into. Got that ?”
  27.
  28. They don’t even hesitate to nod their heads in understanding after she quit talking. When Brighid got like this, there was no arguing with her. It was either her way or the wrong way, and they’d keep their heads if they just followed her line of thinking.
  29.
  30. It doesn’t take long for her to put away the daggers, however, as a smirk soon makes its way onto her expression. “That’s more like it !” she exclaims, pulling her ax from the stone and placing it back over both shoulders before continuing along the path. “Ya know, you guys would probably get more dates if ya stopped bein’ such big whiners.”
  31.
  32. And her men can do nothing but groan in unison, along with give a weak verbal acknowledgement of her last statement.(edited)

  34. Trevan's tired eyes push open, under the weight of too many sleepless nights, and he blinks. Something had woken him, a sound ringing out through the streets. Bartholomew stirs in the saddlebags, agitated. Thrax had stopped in the centre of the road, the crowd parting ways around her. What is it?
  35. Thrax raises her head from the ground in response to Trevan's thought, gesturing ahead, to the glistening armour of Royal Guard, who had similarly stopped in the centre of the walkway.
  36.
  37. The woman at the front is no doubt of intimidating stature, and her ax embedded in the ground by her side does nothing if not tell of her impressive strength; yet Trevan is too tired to run any longer. Go, Thrax, they're guards, they'll help us.
  38.
  39. His fingers run through the fur of the direwolf, comforting the beast as it steps forward toward the group of armoured guard.

  42. A few whispers from the surrounding residents catch the attention of the female knight, and she turns to see where the commotion is coming from. She’s met with the sight of pitch black fur that could rival the color of the darkest shadows, along with a pair of iridescent eyes. This prompts her to react quickly, aiming the hook of her axe at the large creature that stood before her.
  43.
  44. “The hell’s this mutt doing within the walls ?” Damn Gatekeepers can’t even do their jobs properly these days - they’re supposed to keep these things out. Her gaze settles on the small being resting against the beast’s back. It’s got a kid with it ? The hell ?
  45.
  46. A few of her men flank her sides, weapons in hand and ready for her orders, yet she can’t seem to think of a specific demand. In fact, she’s got more questions than answers to this new problem.
  47.
  48. “You shouldn’t be here,” she finally speaks to the beast, still pointing the axe’s blade in its direction. “Just what do you think you’re doing waltzing into the capital like this ?”(edited)

  50. A resentful horripilation rises up Thrax's legs, and wolf emits a low growl, its shoulders rising into a defensive posture.
  51. "It's alr-" - Trevan stops as he hears he own voice, as tattered and broken as his clothes from thirst and disuse.
  52. It's alright, Thrax. They don't understand.
  53. This city, the beacon on the horizon, had been hope for so long. As Trevan looks around, wide-eyed, to the murmuring denizens of its streets, he hopes that they will come to understand him. He looks up to the woman.
  54. "I-I'm sorry," his voice staggers, worn and faltering. "I've c-come looking for help."
  55. Trevan looks down at the wounds, still stinging on his arms and sides, and after a pause reaches into the saddlebags at Thrax's sides, presenting toward the guard the sleeping body of the rat who was housed within.
  56. "Bartholomew is sick."

  58. Brighid furrows her brows as her mind becomes trapped in a haze. This kid looks as if he’s gone through the wringer a couple times over, yet he’s more concerned over some mangy rodent. It’s apparent by her expression alone that she’s baffled by this display of pity for such a small, insignificant creature. Then again, it’s not like she hasn’t seen this done before.
  59.
  60. “Commander Brighid,” one of the men speaks, “what should we do about this ?”
  61.
  62. Finally lowering her axe, she turns to her group and states, “I’ll take him to the nearest healer, see if I can’t find a vet along the way for his pet. The rest of yas keep patrollin’. I ain’t willin’ to let ya slack off all because of one kid.”
  63.
  64. Though they don’t seem too thrilled about the idea, they stand at attention and give a salute to their leader just before continuing down their route, soon disappearing behind the waves of the masses. As soon as they leave her sights, she brings her attention back to her new roughed-up company.
  65.
  66. “Welp, looks like it’s just me and you, kid.” Her gaze drops to the creatures that also accompany him. “And your pets. Mind tellin' me how ya got all banged up in the first place ?”(edited)

  69. Bartholomew lets out a contented mewl in Trevan's hands. The faun boy turns and put the creature back in its resting place, and placing his hand on Thrax's neck, the wolf begins to pace forward to Brighid's side. The boy looks up to the commander, his face shadowed by the unruly golden hair reaching down to his shoulders, as they begin to walk.
  70.
  71. "I don't know exactly what happened. I woke up in the middle of the night, and there was shouting and fire everywhere. My mother, she... Told me to take Thrax, and run, to find help, I'm not sure... She was scared, and so was I, and I didn't want to leave her, but she packed my things in these bags, sat me on Thrax's back and told the wolf to run, as fast as it could." He glances down to his lashed arms. "We live in the woods, you see, and trees have a habit of being... Scratchy. They mean well though. Mostly."

  74. The knight sets her axe back against her shoulders as she pushes past the crowd and scans the area for a healer sign. Occasionally, she glances down at the boy and nods, proving that she is indeed listening to his tale as she's searching.
  75.
  76. "Damn," is all she can manage to say the moment he's finished talking. "At least ya made it out, though. Tore up, yeah, but ya made it." She manages a crooked smile. "You're one tough cookie, kid."

  78. Ander/Thrizi/Trevan/Jek[Rhubarb] - 04/25/2018
  79. Trevan looks up toward the knight, his eyes squinting as the sunlight gleams from her armour.
  80. "Hey, I'm not so much of a kid!" he retorts, gesturing loosely to the small horns that poke through his mane of golden-brown hair. The wolf growls lightly for a moment. "Well... I suppose I am. What about you though, that scar on your nose must have a story to tell?"

  83. Brighid snickers at his realization of his own age, then goes back to watching the path ahead with a grin. "Eh, got in a little scrap with a drake back when I was a bit younger with a friend of mine, and he didn't know how to use a sword properly. Ended up swingin' it around like a drunken buffoon and nickin' me." She shrugs her shoulders. "Nothin' too big worth notin'."

  85. Ander/Thrizi/Trevan/Jek[Rhubarb] - 05/04/2018
  86. "Nothin' too big worth notin'" Trevan parrots, looking off into the crowd. "I've never seen this place up close before. There are so many... people, everywhere."
  87.
  88. A merchant drops a cask of old wine onto the ground in front of the pair, the dark, sour liquid seeping through dusty cobbles, its fingers tracing over the ground like a blood-stricken hand stretching toward them. Trevan trails off, eyes glazed over.
  89.
  90. Thrax gingerly places a paw onto a clear cobble as they continue walking. The merchant scrambles to clear the mess of splintered wood, the wine gleaming blood red against the stone in the afternoon sun.
