  54.
  55. Zebra mussels rapidly colonized World Heritage Site
  56.
  57. Lynn Desjardins
  58. 3 October 2018
  59.
  60. Invasive zebra mussels have rapidly colonized the Rideau River
  61. including the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located
  62. in the nation's capital, Ottawa. A study published in the
  63. Canadian Journal of Zoology is said to be the longest-know
  64. monitoring study of this invasive species in a small river
  65. system.
  66.
  67. Zebra mussels were first found in the Rideau River in 1990. After
  68. monitoring them over two decades there are areas where there are
  69. hundreds of thousands of mussels in a square metre.
  70.
  71. 'Increase ... was just stunning'
  72.
  73. "The increase in their numbers in the early years was just
  74. stunning," said the study's lead author, Dr. Andre Martel of the
  75. Canadian Museum of Nature in a news release. "This long-term
  76. study shows that the species was quick to establish itself and is
  77. here to stay."
  78.
  79. Zebra mussels first arrived in Lake Erie at the heart of North
  80. America in 1986. They originated in the Caspian Sea region of
  81. Europe. Females can produce up to one million eggs per year. The
  82. mussels often spread by attaching themselves to boats.
  83.
  84. Zebra mussels out compete natives
  85.
  86. They outcompete native mussels for food and attach themselves to
  87. hard surfaces including boulders, rock and filtration pipes.
  88.
  89. The Rideau River is a popular waterway for boating, fishing and
  90. other recreational uses.

  120. Recycling Trucks Become Works of Art
  121.
  122. Lisa Schlein
  123. 2 October 2018
  124.
  125. WASHINGTON - It's hard to miss some of the trash and recycling
  126. trucks rumbling through the streets of Washington. Twenty five of
  127. them are covered with colorful artwork, ranging from birds,
  128. flowers and butterflies to abstract images.
  129.
  130. As some sanitation workers do the dirty job of dumping trash into
  131. one of those trucks, their job is made a bit more pleasant by
  132. rolling along with Shelby, the name of one Department of Public
  133. Works trash vehicle bearing vibrant abstract art.
  134.
  135. 'I like the attention'
  136.
  137. "It is real fun. It gets us more attention. I like the
  138. attention," said truck driver, Sanders Wright.
  139.
  140. Wright is proud of the truck, which is wrapped with a vinyl copy
  141. of an original painting, highlighted with the head of a woman
  142. with one eye, a house and a bird. Wright, who is married with 11
  143. children, said he'd never reveal who Shelby is named after but he
  144. has been riding with the truck for several years. His only
  145. criticism of the painting is that he wishes Shelby had two eyes.
  146.
  147. Shelby and some of the other art-covered trucks began hitting the
  148. streets five years ago. They are part of a city initiative to
  149. promote recycling, while showcasing local artist talent. The
  150. original paintings, drawings and mixed media are copied onto
  151. large pieces of vinyl that are placed on the trucks.
  152.
  153. As Sanders maneuvers the truck through narrow alleys, residents
  154. enjoy watching Shelby passing by.
  155.
  156. "It is pretty cool," said one woman who brought out her trash
  157. can. "Adds some color to the neighborhood."
  158.
  159. People are friendlier
  160.
  161. Wright said people have become friendlier since the art
  162. initiative began, getting to know the workers by name and even
  163. bringing them cookies and other treats.
  164.
  165. "It makes you feel good that you have some citizens come out or
  166. the children say, 'Hey, that is a nice truck. I like that art. I
  167. like your truck.' And you just toot the horn or wave to them
  168. thank you."
  169.
  170. "I think the art design of the truck is really nice," said a
  171. Washington resident from Senegal who takes a moment to admire
  172. Shelby. "It is another opportunity for an artist to show what he
  173. can do."
  174.
  175. Recently wrapped
  176.
  177. And that includes artist Michael Crossett, who back at the yard
  178. where the trucks are parked, is looking at a truck that was
  179. recently wrapped with one of his paintings.
  180.
  181. Crossett likes the publicity his painting of a gritty urban
  182. landscape of Washington in mostly red and black will get. He's
  183. pleased the image will be seen in "diverse communities all over
  184. the city," noting it will get more exposure than it would in an
  185. art gallery.
  186.
  187. Crossett painted the original image over photos of the city that
  188. include the U.S. Capitol and a Metro train.
  189.
  190. "It is actually a combination of probably 250 images," Crossett
  191. explained. "Then it was digitized to be placed on the truck."
  192.
  193. He said the painting shows the vibrancy of Washington.
  194.
  195. "The international view of Washington, D.C. is so political, and
  196. it is a different world when you live here, so my paintings
  197. generally show the street life and the energy that is D.C.," said
  198. Crossett.
  199.
  200. The artist said he welcomes the predictable dirt and trash on the
  201. painting.
  202.
  203. "I actually use images of grit or images of concrete to gritty up
  204. my work, so in the end, I think this is the perfect kind of
  205. marriage, where some trash will add to the color of my art,"
  206. Crossett said and laughed.

  238. After Successful Trials, Maersk Launcher Towing First Ocean
  239. Cleanup System to Great Pacific Garbage Patch
  240.
  241. Mike Schuler
  242. 3 October 2018
  243.
  244. The world's first large-scale ocean cleanup system is now headed
  245. to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch after successfully completing
  246. sea trials off the coast California.
  247.
  248. The Ocean Cleanup Project announced Wednesday that its System
  249. 001, which departed San Francisco on Sept. 8, is now back in
  250. towing configuration and is on its way to the Garbage Patch. The
  251. system is being towed by the Maersk Launcher, made available to
  252. the project by A.P. Moller-Maersk and DeepGreen, its current
  253. charter holder.
  254.
  255. System 001 consists of a 600-meter-long (2000 ft) U-shaped
  256. floating barrier with a three-meter (10 ft) skirt. It could be
  257. the first of 60 systems focused on removing floating plastic
  258. debris from Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located some 1,200
  259. nautical miles offshore, over the next two years.
  260.
  261. The system is designed to be propelled by wind and waves,
  262. allowing it to passively catch and concentrate plastic debris in
  263. front of it. Due to its shape, the debris will be funneled to the
  264. center of the system. Moving slightly faster than the plastic,
  265. the system will act like a giant Pac-Man, skimming the surface of
  266. the ocean.
  267.
  268. Situated halfway between Hawaii and California, the Great Pacific
  269. Garbage Patch contains an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of
  270. plastic and covers an area twice the size of Texas. It is
  271. believed the world's largest accumulation zone of ocean plastics.
  272.
  273. While the main objective of System 001 is to prove the technology
  274. and start the cleanup, a secondary goal is to collect performance
  275. data to improve the design for future deployments. The system is
  276. also equipped with solar-powered and satellite-connected sensors,
  277. cameras and navigation lights to communicate the position of
  278. System 001 to passing marine traffic, and enable extensive
  279. monitoring of the system and the environment.
  280.
  281. After delivery of the system to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch,
  282. the Maersk Launcher will remain active as an observation platform
  283. for several weeks.
  284.
  285. If all goes according to plan, The Ocean Cleanup estimates the
  286. fleet of systems, strategically positioned, could remove half of
  287. the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch within five years'
  288. time.
