  3. 1996 SECRETS OF INTERNET MARKETING
  4. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  5.
  6. Hold on to your hat because you are about to enter the new frontier
  7. of sales and marketing. The Internet is the most extraordinary and
  8. cost effective marketing tool you could possibly imagine. If you are
  9. like me and you do not have an unlimited advertising budget read on
  10. because the dynamics of marketing are about to change in your favor
  11. - FOREVER!
  12.
  13. I had great success in 1995 marketing a variety of products on the
  14. Internet and 1996 promises to be even better. Due to my success
  15. I have been featured on two videos and in numerous national magazine
  16. articles concerning the subject of Internet Marketng. I receive orders
  17. from every continent, every day, even as I sleep. I am doing a thriving
  18. business with people I never would have been able to reach through
  19. traditional advertising. If you already realize the benifets of online
  20. marketing and would like to get started skip to the end of this report
  21. to see how you can be doing business on the Internet in days with my
  22. personal assistance.
  23.
  24.
  25. My monthly marketing costs now are negligible - less than you might
  26. pay for dinner for two and a movie. This success has come as a
  27. result of studying the Internet culture, experimentation and just plain
  28. hard work. I am still experimenting and learning even as you are
  29. reading this. I want to take this opportunity, in the course of this article,
  30. to pass along to you what I have learned. I will tell you why I think you
  31. should be using the Internet as part of your marketing campaign and
  32. what has worked for me.
  33.
  34. The time is right for you to begin marketing on the Internet if you have
  35. not started already. The Internet has attained critical mass and
  36. thousands more people are coming online everyday. These are people
  37. who have the power to spend. In the very near future, a little later in
  38. 1996, cable companies will begin piping the Internet to the huge
  39. masses who, let's face it, simply do not use a PC in their everyday life,
  40. for one reason or another. This high speed cable pipe will send
  41. information into a TV set top box at speeds HUNDREDS of times
  42. faster than a typical 28.8 modem (about three times the speed of a T1!).
  43.
  44. When that happens this incredible marketing vehicle will be even
  45. better and the floodgates will really open. The people who have
  46. established themselves on the Internet will reap huge rewards.
  47.
  48.
  49. REASONS FOR YOU TO BE MARKETING ON THE INTERNET
  50. Let's begin by discussing some of the advantages of marketing on the Internet.
  51.
  52. * One of the beauties of Internet Marketing is that you control the entire
  53. process from start to finish. You do not have to rely on printers,
  54. manufacturers, media people or anyone else. Marketing on the Internet
  55. is fast and it is effective. With some products you can bring you
  56. manufacturing and distribution costs to practically `zilch'.
  57.
  58. * You can support users on your terms for very little cost to you or the user.
  59.
  60. * You can establish one-to-one or one-to-many communication directly
  61. with the customer. In many cases the customer will approach you
  62. for information.
  63.
  64. * Your message can easily be tailored to meet the specific needs
  65. of the customer and much of this can be automated to minimize
  66. the work involved.
  67.
  68. * Your message can be delivered to your customer, or customers,
  69. by e-mail instantly.
  70.
  71. * The Internet is a great leveler. For the first time in history big
  72. corporations and small businesses are put on an equal footing.
  73. The clever businessperson no longer has to worry that he or she
  74. will not be able to compete because they do not have the resources
  75. to foot a multimillion dollar marketing campaign.
  76.
  77. * You receive immediate feedback from potential customers and can
  78. adjust your marketing campaign accordingly.
  79.
  80. * You can create order forms and receive orders electronically. I do
  81. it today even with all of the controversy about the insecurity of
  82. financial transactions on the Net. If customers do not feel comfortable
  83. sending credit card information over the Net they will certainly pick
  84. up their telephone and call your 800 number without any hesitation.
  85.
  86. I believe that marketing successfully on the Internet is more of an art
  87. than a science. It is an art that is well worth learning because the rewards
  88. can be enormous.
  89.
  90.
  91. Let's jump right in and see how you can take begin marketing on the Internet
  92.
  93. ADVERTISING IS WELCOMED ON THE INTERNET!
  94. Well, you might say, `I thought advertising on the Internet and the
  95. World Wide Web is a no-no'. Nothing could be further from the truth.
  96. Let's clarify this once and for all, advertising on the Internet is welcome.
  97. Netizens want information on useful products and have the capacity to
  98. buy lots of stuff.
  99.
  100. If businesses follow a few simple steps and abide by proper Netiquette
  101. they will be welcomed on the Internet and will reap tremendous rewards
  102. for little investment. I am living proof of this and you can do the same.
  103. Sure you might get a flame or two even if you follow all of the rules
  104. I suggest to abide by proper Netiquette but it is surely worht it considering
  105. the potenital of Internet Marketing.
  106.
  107. The secret to doing business on the Internet is to make sure that
  108. Netizens know about your business in a non-obtrusive manner.
  109. There are an over 30,000,000 million Internet users out there. But,
  110. it really is a small community in many ways. Word travels fast and if you
  111. have a good product or service Internauts will find out about it. It is also
  112. easy to get the word out to a large portion of the Internet population. If
  113. you use the proper techniques you can do great business on the Internet,
  114. but I must stress if you use improper techniques contrary to the
  115. philosophy of the Net you will receive a tremendous backlash that can
  116. paralyze your business. You must realize this. People who begin
  117. marketing on the Net blindly are in for a rude awakening.
  118.
  119.
  120. THE WORLD WIDE WEB IN YOUR INTERNET MARKETING CAMPAIGN
  121. By now, unless you were living under a rock for the past year, you
  122. have heard of the World Wide Web on the Internet. In all probability
  123. you have surfed the Web. 1995 was an EXPLOSIVE year for the Internet
  124. and especially the Web.
  125.
  126. The Web is the fastest growing section of the Internet and to the
  127. person who wishes to sell on-line it is a dream come true. The Web
  128. is making front page news in major newspapers and magazines every day.
  129. Time, Newsweek, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have
  130. all carried prominent stories extolling the popularity of the World Wide
  131. Web. Almost every major company is putting together a strategy on how
  132. they will eventually do business on the Internet.
  133.
  134. I believe that marketing successfully on the Internet is more of an art
  135. than a science. It is an art that is well worth learning because the rewards
  136. can be enormous.
  137.
  138.
  139. The Web is a very important part of your on-line marketing campaign,
  140. but contrary to popular belief it is only the tip of the iceberg.
  141. I will go a step further in stating that if you simply put up a page on
  142. the Web and do not effectively tell the world about it you will be
  143. sorely disappointed.
  144.
  145. One of the things that immediately grabs your attention when using
  146. the Web is it's ability to show graphics and handle video and audio
  147. files on the fly. It is the only portion of the Internet that has these
  148. capabilities.
  149.
  150. The Web is easily accessed with a browser such as the popular Mosic,
  151. Netscape, Microsofts Explorer or Netcruiser to name a few. Potential
  152. buyers accessing your home page can read your information on-line
  153. or print it to paper. Netscape is commanding an impressive percent
  154. of the browser world. In some estimations 75% of Web users are
  155. surfing with Netscape. Microsoft is sure to make inroads into that
  156. percentage but no one knows how much of the market they will be able
  157. to capture, certainly Netscape has a big lead but I would never
  158. underestimate Microsoft.
  159.
  160.
  161. In the 1995 Internet How-To Guide I had stated how some popular
  162. Web sites were getting in excess of 25,000 `hits' (accesses) per day!
  163. Well, has that number ever skyrocked for the really popular sites
  164. which now receive well over 1,000,000 hits a day. Even this number will
  165. rise dramatically in the coming year. We will discuss the value of
  166. hits a little later but suffice to say that a `hit' does not equate to an
  167. individual visitor. Even so getting a million hits certainly equates to a
  168. healthy crowd. Imagine having even 25,000 people reading about your
  169. product or service in a given day. Every day. And beside the direct
  170. accesses you receive from on-line buyers you also have the advantage
  171. over your competition as being perceived as `high tech' and differenciating
  172. you from the crowd. You can and will use your World Wide Web address
  173. in your conventional marketing literature.
  174.
  175.
  176.
  177. STRUCTURE OF THE WEB
  178. --------------------------------------
  179. There is no central directory or official top to the Web. There is no
  180. one comprehensive index where everyone starts their browsing.
  181. There is no KEYWORD function from a pull down menu such as
  182. America On-line has. There is no FIND function such as in
  183. CompuServe. So, it is a bit more difficult for people to find your
  184. page on the Web. On the other hand, this can definitely be used to
  185. your advantage, especially since you luckily are reading The
  186. 1996 Internet How-To Guide. If you are a little more resourceful
  187. than your competition you can get the business. We'll talk about
  188. some of the things that you can do to generate interest in a little while.
  189.
  190.
  191. NO OFFICIAL TOP OF THE WEB
  192. ---------------------------------------------
  193. Although there is no official top of the World Wide Web. The
  194. unofficial top is the Web is the site at CERN wher it all started. The
  195. CERN Directory of Web Sites is one is the first directories in
  196. which you will want to list your Web site. Millions of people use this
  197. site as a starting point in there Web searches. Besides CERN you
  198. should also list your site with Lycos, Yahoo, the World Wide Web
  199. Worm, What's New on the Web and the World Wide Web Yellow
  200. pages.
  201.
  202. When I put new businesses on the Web I make sure that I list them
  203. in 25 to 100+ of the most popular Web directories. It is very important.
  204. Some of the popular directories get in excess of 1,000,000
  205. accesses PER MONTH.
  206.
  207. Each of these directories and more are listed in the elsewhere in
  208. this Guide. This will insure you of maximum exposure. From the
  209. Main Menu of this guide you can access Finding Stuff on the Web.
  210. We list popular search engines that help you find resources on the
  211. Web. Your Web site should be listed in at least five of these
  212. directories and ideally 15 or more. This will give you a good start
  213. in making your Web page visible to the Internet community. And it
  214. doesn't cost you anything!
  215.
  216. If you are interested in quickly and easily getting your Web Site listed
  217. in 200+ Web Search Engines and Indices Read the Section entitled
  218. Instand Internet Publicity from the Main Menu of The 1996 Internet
  219. How-To Guide.
  220.
  221. HOW TO GENERATE WEB TRAFFIC USING USENET NEWSGROUPS
  222. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  223. A great way to generate traffic on your Web site or to sell directly
  224. to the Internet Community is by posting selected messages in
  225. appropriate Usenet newsgroups. As I mentioned earlier there are
  226. over 10,000 different newsgroups on the Internet so you have a
  227. broad choice of subjects to choose from.
  228.
  229. Step one is to make a list of the newsgroups you feel are
  230. appropriate for your posting. Depending on your product or
  231. service this may be anywhere from 1 to 10,000. Here is where you
  232. have to be careful. Whereas on the Web advertising is accepted,
  233. and expected, on Newsgroups it is controversial. Although no one
  234. can stop you from posting messages, if your posting is deemed as
  235. inappropriate you may get flamed by some readers. Flaming is
  236. the sending of nasty e-mail messages. That is not to say that you
  237. won't get many orders and inquiries as well. Maybe even
  238. thousands of orders.
  239.
  240. There have been numerous documented cases of companies
  241. which have spammed the Internet. Spamming is posting the same
  242. message in many newsgroups. The name spam originates from a
  243. famous Monty Python comedy skit. One company posted to over
  244. 5,000 newsgroups in one felt swoop. They were flamed incessantly
  245. but they also made a killing for one nights work - more than most
  246. people make in a year.
  247.
  248. No matter how much care you take you will probably offend
  249. someone. If you are playing by the rules and you get flamed don't
  250. let it concern you. It is just part of doing business on the Internet
  251. and the potential rewards are great.
  252.
  253. I am now using powerful technology tools to monitor hundreds of
  254. newsgroups simultaneously for posts which I think I can potentially
  255. convert into sales. I developed this newsgroup scanning feature out
  256. of necessity to maximize as much as possible the incredible
  257. potential of Newsgroups.
  258.
  259. I use this technology for my products and those of my clients to
  260. `listen in' on hundreds of newsgroups. I either reply to the interested
  261. parties directly with preformatted mail from my clients or forward the
  262. leads to my clients. This is my top of the line ongoing service and is
  263. really quite reasonable. it is detailed in the Section entitled Instant
  264. Internet Publicity. To try to do this manually would be all but impossible.
  265.
  266.
  267. SET UP LINKS AND THEY WILL COME
  268. -----------------------------------------------------
  269. Links - hypertext links can bring a tremendous number of people to
  270. your Web site. In fact links are so important that some of the
  271. popular sites, such as Hot Wired, are selling link space on the
  272. their Web pages.
  273.
  274. Most people will do a reciprocal agreement for free. You place a
  275. link to the other persons site on your page and they will place a
  276. link for your page on their site.
  277.
  278. The link doesn't have to take up more than a line or two of space
  279. and it simply has to include a small description and the URL
  280. address of the site it is linking to. Here is a typical link:
  281.
  282. <LI><A HREF="http:/totw.com/videovu.htm">VideoVu
  283. Home Page</A><P>
  284.
  285.
  286. When the person clicks on the link they are magically brought to
  287. your Web page.
  288.
  289. Try to set up as many links as possible. Begin going through
  290. some of the sites listed in Best Web Sites on the Main Menu of this
  291. program. Find sites that you would like to be linked to and contact
  292. the owner of the site. Their e-mail address and/or telephone
  293. number will be listed on their Web page. Remember some pages
  294. generate in excess of 1,000,000 accesses per day so if you can be
  295. listed on a good site(s) you can instantly generate tremendous
  296. Web traffic.
  297.
  298. By listing other interesting sites on your Web page you are making
  299. your site that much more interesting and of value to your readers.
  300.
  301.
  302.
  303. KEEP THEM COMING BACK FOR MORE
  304. -------------------------------------------------------------
  305. You want to keep people coming back to your site on a regular
  306. basis. Make sure your site is up to date and constantly changing.
  307. A real estate broker should have new houses on line and
  308. mortgage rates listed, a financial firm should have the latest
  309. market happenings. Lists are always good ways to keep people
  310. interested. Contests and games are other techniques that keep vistors
  311. yearning for more.
  312.
  313.
  314. TRADITIONAL MARKETING MATERIAL
  315. ------------------------------------------------------
  316. Make sure that your URL and e-mail address is prominently
  317. placed in all of your traditional marketing material - brochures,
  318. letterhead and business cards. As more and more people begin
  319. using the Web on a regular basis you will be perfectly positioned
  320. to take advantage of your Web site.
  321.
  322.
  323. WHAT WILL YOU SELL
  324. -------------------------------
  325. Ideally, you will already have a product in mind that you want to
  326. market on the Internet. If you do not yet have a product you can
  327. do a survey of available newsgroups and come up with a product
  328. that is appealing to popular groups already on the Internet. Start
  329. frequenting various newgroups and mailing lists. Learn about the
  330. culture of each group or list. Learn what is accepted and what is not.
  331.
  332. After you have selected the newsgroups you wish to post to, the
  333. next step is to decide on the type of message you are going to
  334. use. You have choices in the approach you can take.
  335. Experimentation on a small scale will help you to analyze which
  336. approach is best for you.
  337.
  338. The folks on the Internet love free information. So one approach
  339. which has worked well for me is to post a lengthy message which
  340. contains mostly free/valuable information. I also make sure that I
  341. include my contact information so that people know how to reach
  342. me. I have used this technique successfully with consulting
  343. services and books. I have seen others use it successfully with
  344. legal services, videos, reports and audios.
  345.
  346. The other type of message you can post is a short e-mail
  347. message containing your advertising pitch. If you keep it short
  348. people are much more tolerant than if you post a lengthy ad for
  349. your product. Remember, that in the prior scenario your message
  350. was lengthy but it contained lots of valuable free information. I
  351. recently used a short e-mail message successfully to let people
  352. know about a file which I had uploaded to the Internet. My
  353. messages resulted in many thousands of downloads of the
  354. file. I received a very positive reaction from the on-line community.
  355.
  356.
  357. The actual posting of the messages can either be done manually
  358. which, depending on the volume of newsgroups you will be posting
  359. to, can be time consuming. In many Windows Internet interfaces
  360. you can cut and paste the names of newsgroups one after another.
  361. If you wish to automate your postings you can use an automated
  362. program to post to hundreds of newsgroups at a time. Beware that
  363. indiscriminant cross posting is frowned on. There are times that
  364. cross posting is acceptable as long as your message fits the
  365. culture of the groups you are posting to. In fact, not posting to
  366. appropriate groups is bad net etiquete.
  367.
  368.
  369. WORK BACKWARDS
  370. ----------------------------
  371. A powerful techique that I commonly use is to gear a section of my
  372. Web to something that I know will be appealing to a majority of
  373. the members of the large newsgroups. This is working backwards.
  374.
  375. In essence, I first deciding on the newsgroups I want to target
  376. and then creating the Web content or FTP file content. Because
  377. the Web is so flexible and can reflect changes in miliseconds it is
  378. easy to create offers that will appeal to a wide range of people.
  379.
  380. Taken to an extreme you could mold your Web Site to peak the
  381. interest of most of the users on the Internet. I know of one such
  382. person who posted a message on a popular newsgroup and
  383. created a flood of traffic for his serve in the proximity of 10,000 hits
  384. in one hour. Unfortunately, the server wasn't able to handle such
  385. an avalanche of users and locked up.
  386.
  387.
  388. MAILING LISTS
  389. ---------------------
  390. Marketing with mailing lists follows the same formula as
  391. newsgroups. Remember that by posting to one popular mailing
  392. list you can generate 30,000+ messages that will be sent directly
  393. into recipients e-mailboxes. And that is only using one mailing list.
  394. Imagine using ten, one hundred or one thousand lists. Again keep
  395. in mind that you may be subjecting yourself to flaming or other
  396. harassing attacks but the results can be very good. Post where
  397. appropriate.
  398.
  399. All told, using newsgroups and mailing lists can potentially make
  400. your marketing material available to over 30,000,000 Intenet users.
  401. And the cost to reach this huge market is minute compared with
  402. traditional advertising.
  403.
  404.
  405. START YOUR OWN E-ZINE
  406. -----------------------------------------
  407. Another great way of generating interest, keeping in touch with Internet
  408. Users and generating income is by starting an e-zine. An e-zine is
  409. an electronic magazine. This can be a simple monthly newsletter
  410. that keeps people informed.
  411.
  412. It is acceptable to send people information which they request and
  413. if you have an interesting subject that appeals to lots of people if is
  414. relatively easy to build up a large circulation list quickly and inexpensively.
  415. For example, I started an e-zine this past year and build a circulation
  416. of over 1,000 in 4 days. This consisted of only three good postings in
  417. appropriate places. You can do the same.
  418.
  419. There are many e-zines with very large circulations that charge advertising
  420. fees and subscription fees in the hundreds of dollars. It is an untapped area
  421. most people do not even think of exploiting.
  422.
  423. SPECIAL WEB SPACE OFFER
  424. -----------------------------------------------
  425.
  426. I would like to help you do business on the Internet.
  427.
  428. Physical location is no barrier concerning who you can work with.
  429. I have happy clients all over the world who love our service.
  430.
  431. You want to work with someone who has great references from
  432. CURRENT clients.
  433.
  434. On the hardware side I provide you with a virtual server so people can
  435. access you at: http://www.your domain name.com -
  436. You must look professional.
  437.
  438. You will be connected to the Internet on our fast T1 server. You
  439. need this wide bandwidth
  440.
  441. Most importantly, I am always available to you for telephone
  442. support and guidance concerning developing a strategy for your
  443. Internet Marketing Campaign. Setting up a Web site is the LEAST
  444. important aspect of marketing on the Internet. You must integrate
  445. this with other techniques to be successful.
  446.
  447. In the past year alone I have been interviewed by BYTE Magazine,
  448. Online Access, have starred in The Internet Marketing Video and
  449. am currently featured in AT&T Magazine's cover story on Internet
  450. Marketing which has a circulation of over 300,000.
  451.
  452. My clients love my pricing because of what I provide them with.
  453. I have chosen not to bring on a zillion clients at $50 a month and
  454. say `have fun' and see them flounder.
