  1. The Frail Green-Eyed Monster
  2. Of all our emotions, there is one which is like no other. It can be considered the most powerful emotion, being even more fearful than hate and anger. It is jealousy, the one dreaded emotion that is encountered multiple times in our life. Many[too broad] have trouble dealing with this[what does "this" refer to?] disastrous emotion, but if /you/ think about it[what is the "it"?] rationally, jealousy is easy to quell.
  3. Often, /you/ will find /your/ jealousy caused by others(Try using "One often finds jealousy the fault of those around them."). Perhaps the co-worker beside /you/ was promoted[,] Or one of /your/ friends have an item of /your/ desire[again, extremely weak. addresses the reader that may not be able to relate. needs revision]. By comparing /yourself/, /you/ only feed the green eyed monster[. It is pointless.] Contrary to /your/ ego, there will always be someone more popular or famous than /you/. They[do not use "they to start a sentence; it is extremely weak and usually the "they" is ambiguous"] are more respected, reputable, and popular for whatever reason["whatever reason. extremely weak]. Simply accept it, as \the character\[you can omit "the character"] Montano did, when his job was being taken by Othello. One would be angry and jealous if \they were being\[kinda unnecessary] replaced, but not so with Montano, who speaks highly of Othello, "For I have served him, and the man commands like a full soldier... as to throw out our eyes for brave Othello" (Act 2 Scene 1 35-38)
  4. You should not care if another has better skills than you. Their skills only benefit themselves, and do not affect you. Suppose you stacked cards 50ft tall, but another was able to stack cards 75ft tall. Your 50ft tower is made no shorter with the consideration of the 75ft tower. An accomplishment is an accomplishment, something great is made no less by a greater one. Thinking otherwise would be foolish, you should cherish your ability to stack a tower 50ft tall. As Joan Didion puts it, "To cure jealousy is to see it for what it is, a dissatisfaction with self." (Emily Battaglia)
  5. Jealousy does not only stem from others however, it can come from you, and your relationships. Don't fret, if your relationship is a healthy one, it will be hard to break. One of the most important aspects of a relationship is trust. There isn't much left to build on without that key element. Cassio and Bianca from Shakespeare's Othello play had a great amount of trust. Cassio finds a handkerchief, and is completely upfront with his wife Bianca. Right off the bat, he tells he, "Throw your vile guesses in the devil's teeth, from whence you have them. You are jealous now that this is from some mistress, some remembrance. No, by my faith, Bianca." (Act 3 Scene 4 179-182)
  6. Cassio and Bianca are well off in the story, while Othello, who did not trust Desdemona, dies, along with Desdemona.
  7. Another important part of keeping jealousy out of your relationship is simply self confidence. "You can be confident with yourself but insecure about your relationship, but you can rarely be confident with your relationship and insecure about yourself." (Emily Battaglia) The hard part was trusting your relationship, being confident with yourself is an easy task that secures your relationship.
  8. Finally, you should be content with yourself. Accept what you have, and accept yourself. Iago in Othello was not content with his rank, resulting in jealousy of Othello and Cassio, evident by his lines, "I know my place, I am worth no worse a place...He, in good time, must his lieutenant be, and I - god bless the mark! - his moorship's ancient." (Act 1 Scene 1 12-33)
  9. With a sound mind, you can identify your causes for jealousy and quell it. The green eyed monster is no harder to slay than a deer yet many fall to it by running in unarmed with clouded thoughts.
