I should have known better.

It wasn’t every day that one would come across someone like him. He was strong, his muscular figure towering over my much more lithe frame, yet despite it he carried himself with such refined grace and elegance, like a fallen leaf dancing about in the wind. The way his golden locks, glistening in the sun, fell past his face, just the slightest hint of a feral animal just wanting to claw his way into me behind his gentlemanly smile, and draping around his neck… And how I do enjoy a respectable, well-maintained tuft of chest hair… He was gorgeous in every sense of the word. What girl in their right mind would have refused?

I should have known better.

“He’s just a dirty mutt like all the rest of ‘em. You know better than to trust him. He’s just gonna use some well-rehearsed script to lure you into some dark alley so he can have his way with you, then run off like all the rest of ‘em do.” But I didn’t believe her. The look in his eyes was one of sunlit intensity; and the way his cheeks turned such a fiery red when a playful comment made him blush, I almost feared that he would suddenly burst into flames. What girl in their mind would’ve turned down that?

My best friend and I, we’ve known each other since I was a baby. I thought if anyone would be supportive, she would’ve… She wasn’t. I told her she should’ve been happy for me. She said I was only raising myself up for the greatest of falls. Words were said that could never be taken back. Things were done that will forever be remembered. But she was standing in the way of what I really wanted. Why should I have simply let her?

With nowhere else to turn, I set my sights on the goal I wished to pursue. The energy between us was like a flame, dancing across a trail of dried rose petals. He treated me well, and I him with the utmost love and respect. I knew not where the trail he took me along would lead me, but what was I to care? I’ve heard people say “The two seem to get along very well.” I gave him everything I had to offer… What else was there to offer?

After I gave myself wholly to him, things… Happened. I tried to hide it from him, but lying in everyone is that primal instinct that tells them when it’s happened. He was scared. He didn’t know what to do. I tried to tell him things would be okay. That we’d be able to make it through anything if we set our minds to it. He didn’t believe me. Why would he? I was just that girl he picked up off the streets.
