  20. f03: Almost there.
  21. f04: You’ve been saying that for ages now, but we’re still not there!!
  22. I’m starving to death!!
  23. It’s all your fault Shirou, for wanting to eat all the time on the way. You’ve eaten away all my travel expenses too!!
  24. f05: Even if we get to Quqing, we’ll have to live outdoors!!
  25. Ehh~~!?
  26. <Cooking Master Boy!>
  27.

  29. f01: [Yunnan Province’s Quqing—]
  30. Yup, this is it!! We’re here, Shirou!!
  31. …The mountains on the way here…was sure a hard climb…besides, why did we come to a small village?
  32. [Chapter 33: Food that Travels Through Time]
  33. <There are lots of places with easier routes…>
  34.
  35. pg03
  36. f01: Before leaving Guangzhou…
  37. Mao
  38. f02: A legendary, master chef of Yang Spring Restaurant, Kayu,
  39. is said to have opened a family restaurant in a small village in Yunnan after retiring.
  40. f03: Although he probably isn’t alive anymore, you should still visit when you get to Yunnan!!
  41. Chouyu-shi said I should have a look at it.
  42. Whatever!
  43. f04: I came to Yunnan specifically to see this shop!!
  44. <And we’re finally here!!>
  45. Even so, there might not be yummy food.
  46. f05: Grrruumble
  47. sfx: grrrumble
  48. f06: Mao-bro, let’s go into the fields and steal some vegetables to eat.
  49. <That won’t know anyway!!>
  50. No way!! You mustn’t do something like that!!
  51. Aww~~ don’t be such a spoilsport, Mao-bro—
  52. f07: Eh!?
  53.
  54. pg04
  55. f01: [Welcome Liu Mao Hsing-shi]
  56. M-Mao, look!?
  57. f02: “Massive welcome to Liu Mao Hsing-shifu”…you’re on the banner!!
  58.
  59. pg05
  60. f01: Liu Mao Hsing-shifu,
  61. welcome to Quqing.
  62. f02: Ehh…!?
  63.
  64. pg06
  65. f01: Hehe….Mao-bro…
  66. f02: In Japan, there’s a legend about “Urashima Tarou”—
  67. f03: Right now, I feel like I’m in the “Palace of the Dragon God.”
  68. f04: You’re the youngest Super Chef in the world—
  69. Who doesn’t know your name, Liu Mao Hsing!!
  70. f05: <Ah!>
  71. Grrumble~~
  72. <So famous!!>
  73. Since you’re so hungry, Mao-bro, then dig in!!
  74. {Just a comment from me. The story of Urashima Tarou is kinda a tragedy about time. So it actually implies something later in this chapter haha)
  75.
  76. pg07
  77. f01: Ah!!
  78. f02: M-Mao-bro, is this…!!
  79. Yup, this is the famous “crispy rice crust” from Szechuan!!
  80. f03: It involves puffing up the slightly burnt rice, then pouring steaming sauce over it.
  81. It crunches nicely in your mouth, making it very satisfying both gustatory and auditory. {dunno how to word it less formally :/}
  82. f04: Is my cooking up to your standards?
  83.
  84. pg08
  85. f01: Ah…it’s the lady from before.
  86. f02: Um…
  87. Um…
  88. f03: Your food is delicious!!
  89. f04: Really?
  90. f05: It’s yummy all right, but compared to Mao’s, the taste is less exciting.
  91. Maybe even tastes a little bad?
  92. <Shirou!!>
  93. f06: You can shut up, Extra…
  94. <Hmph>
  95.
  96. pg09
  97. f01: Uh…um…
  98. Do you know if the restaurant Mr Kayu opened 30 years ago is nearby…?
  99. f02: Kayu is..
  100. my grandfather and I am the master chef of “Quqing Restaurant,” Anri…
  101. f03: You…you’re…
  102. f04: I’ve been waiting for you for a while ♡
  103. Liu Mao Hsing-shifu—
  104. Eh!?
  105. f05: You…You’ve been waiting for me…!?
  106. Bring it out!!
  107.
  108. pg10
  109. f01: W-What’s this for…!?
  110. f02: Please listen first…
  111. this is a story from fifty years ago…
  112. f03: In Guangzhou, Grandfather Kayu,
  113. developed a very special kind of crispy rice crust.
  114. f04: This type of rice crust had a very peculiar shape and the way it was prepared was rather showy. Its scent was said to startle the entire Guangzhou city.
  115. Back then, it was pretty famous throughout the country.
  116.
  117. pg11
  118. f01: When Grandfather returned to the village, he opened a restaurant and continued making it here—
  119. other people from around the country visited.
  120. f02: However, Grandfather didn’t teach anyone how to make the rice crust—
  121. and died thirty years ago.
  122. f03: He only left—
  123. a bunch of tools, whose purposes are unknown.
  124. f04: There’s a problem though, / the current Governor of Yunnan tasted this dish 30 years ago,
  125. and on his tenth anniversary of being the governor, he really wants that kind of rice crust!!
  126. f05: But its recipe was never passed on and there’s probably not that many still alive who’ve tasted it…!!
  127. f06: I know this is an impossible request,
  128. but you’re my only hope…!!
  129. f07: Please use your skills as a super chef—
  130. and present this “phantom” dish once more!!
  131.
  132. pg12
  133. f01: Please…!!
  134. f02: <Th…This woman…!! She’s totally trying to sexually appeal to Mao-bro…!!
  135. f03: Almost there…!!
  136. f04: St…stop dreaming!!
  137. Solve your own problems by yourself!!
  138. f05: Mao-bro, you don’t need to do all this extra work yourself!!
  139. That woman just wants to use you!!
  140. f06: Of course I won’t make you guys work for free!!
  141.
  142. pg13
  143. f01: If you succeed in making the dish,
  144. then this is all yours…!!
  145. f02: What do you think…?
  146. M-Mao-bro…!!
  147. f03: I accept.
  148.
  149. pg14
  150. f01: My predecessor developed this dish,
  151. f02: therefore I have to revive it….!!
  152. f03: Thank…thank you…!!
  153. <Mao-bro!!>
  154.
  155. pg15
  156. f01: <In the outside world…Kiddo…>
  157. <You can’t do everything you promise…>
  158. f02: <Grandfather was — a solitary genius…>
  159. <To revive a dish developed by such a person, from thirty years ago,>
  160. <is a task that I could never do…>
  161. <And — even though you have no shortage of talent, I doubt you can do such a thing too…>
  162. f03: <The point of asking you to try anyway…>
  163. <was only to prove to the Governor of Yunnan that even a Super Chef can’t do it.>
  164. f04: <So work hard—>
  165. <In my place…>
  166. f05: <Hey…>
  167. f06: <Fufu…that kid sure is cute…>
  168. <When the governor is gone,>
  169. <let me cuddle him a bit…♡>
  170.
  171. pg16
  172. f01: Crispy rice crust huh…
  173. f02: Mom used to make it in Szechuan too…
  174. f03: After the rice releases a rich parched scent—
  175. f04: dry them on an airy surface.
  176. f05: The next step is to prepare the sauce that goes over it…
  177. f06: Add chicken, green onion, ginger broth, bamboo shoots, meat and peas,
  178. and some seasoning to adjust the flavour.
  179.
  180. pg17
  181. f01: When bubbling, thicken with cornstarch and then the sauce is complete!!
  182. f02: When the rice crusts are dry,
  183. lightly fry them until they’re golden—
  184. f03: Preparations complete!!
  185. f04: When about to eat, pour the sauce onto them!!
  186. f05: Pouring the sauce is the most fascinating part of the rice crust dish process!!
  187. The sound and crisp smell is extremely exciting!!
  188. f06: M-Mao…bro.
  189. Eat before the sauce fully soaks into the rice crusts!!
  190. The crispy taste of the crusts and the rice sauce combine nicely in your mouth, with a crunchy texture. / This really is one of the best dishes of rice-based cuisine!!
  191. f07: …That’s basically the basic steps of making crispy rice crust dishes…
  192.
  193. pg18
  194. f01: However, what is the “phantom” dish that the legendary chef, Kayu developed…!!
  195. f02: According to Anri,
  196. it has a peculiar shape, a showy preparation and a very rich smell… / Heck…just what kind of cuisine is that…?
  197. <Rice crusts were a pretty unique dish to begin with…>
  198. f03: But the most confusing part—
  199. is this 3-piece set.
  200. f04: A metal semi-sphere…
  201. what is it? Maybe a wok…
  202. <…but it’s way too small…>
  203. f05: What a weird pot…
  204. f06: There are three weird chains too…
  205. Yeah~~!!
  206. f07: Shirou, Shirou, look at this!!
  207. Eh?
  208.
  209. pg19
  210. f01: Hehe— if you stuff the rice into this thing, then you can get this kind of crust.
  211. f02: Wow— Such a large sheet of crust, / but then, what’s this for?
  212. I found a solution to that too.
  213. f03: If you do this…
  214. f04: You can make rare, circle-shaped crusts!! / You can even make all sorts of shapes right!?
  215. Yeeeeah….
  216. f05: But making it circular-shaped, doesn’t make it tastier...
  217. f06: there’s no point in that handle,
  218. f07: and in having two of those.
  219. Yeah…
  220. f08: Furthermore, these three chains…
  221. f09: Shirou, you should help me try to think of possibilities too—!!
  222. Just give up Mao-bro—!! / That woman just wants you to be ashamed in her place.
  223.
  224. pg20
  225. f01: sfx: chirp chirp...
  226. sfx: snore… {around Shirou}
  227. f02: sfx: chirp chirp…
  228. He stayed up all night…
  229. f03: <Looks like you put in quite a bit of effort,>
  230. <but the result won’t change…>
  231. <I’ve tried everything you’ve thought of already.>
  232. f04: <Well…there’s still a day left until the deadline…>
  233. <Work hard in my place — ♡>
  234. f05: <Kayu-daishi…>
  235. <He was the legendary master chef of “Yang Spring Restaurant” before Ruou-daishi…>
  236. f06: <Just what kind of person was he…>
  237. <and in what kind of situation did he create his famous rice crust dish…>
  238. f07-8: sfx: roll roll
  239. {You don’t have to type up the sfx in this page since it might not be cleaned. I’m just thinking that there might be cleaners who thought they weren’t sfx (they are big after all)}
  240.
  241. pg21
  242. f01: Strike!!
  243. f02: You shouldn’t play with cooking equipment—!!!
  244. <You brat—>
  245.
  246. pg22
  247. f01: Th…This could be put together…!!
  248. f02: <"This type of rice crust had a very peculiar shape,>
  249. <and the way it was prepared was rather showy. Its scent was said to startle he entire Guangzhou city...”>
  250. f03: I…I see…
  251. so that’s why…!!
  252. f04: Amazing…
  253. f05: Kayu really was a super amazing chef—!!!
  254. M-Mao-bro…!!
  255.
  256. pg23
  257. f01: chatter / chatter {chatter = rest of small bubbles}
  258. f02: <What…what are they doing…!?>
  259. <What can they achieve by doing this…!?>
  260.
  261. pg24
  262. f01: [The Govenor of Yunnan finally arrived —]
  263. [Governor Lei, of Yunnan]
  264. {small bubbles} chatter
  265. f02: Hey…hurry up and serve it…
  266. Yes!!
  267. f03: So…so exciting…
  268. when you guys see it, prepared to be shocked…
  269. f04: Governor Lei,
  270. I, Anri, asked the Super Chef, Mao— / to prepare my Grandfather Kayu’s crispy rice dish!!
  271. f05: Please try it…!!
  272.
  273. pg25
  274. f01: Eh…!?
  275. f02: That…That’s it!!
  276. This is definitely Kayu-shifu’s crispy rice crust!!
  277.
  278. pg26
  279. f01: It…it really is a weird shape…!!
  280. How is this big “ball” is rice crust!?
  281. f02: <Is...this thing really>
  282. <Grampa’s dish…!?>
  283. f03: M-Mao!! Where’s the sauce!?
  284. The sauce that goes over it!!
  285. Yeah, without the sauce, it can’t be considered a crispy rice dish!!
  286. f04: Well, please wait a moment,
  287. the real fun is about to start.
  288. f05: When I count down three seconds—
  289. The legendary “phantom" dish, that disappeared thirty years ago, will revive!!
  290.
  291. pg27
  292. f01: What!?
  293. f02: What do you mean by that!?
  294. f03: Three!!
  295. f04: Two!!
  296. f05: One!!
  297. f06: U…
  298. Uwahh
  299.
  300. pg28-29 {double spread}
  301. f01: Ahh…the rice crust…
  302. released a startling amount of warm air!!
  303.
  304. pg30
  305. f01: Ahh—!!!
  306. f02: When the rice crust breaks open, the sauce spills out from inside!!
  307.
  308. pg31
  309. f01: Kayu-daishi’s special dish, “Open China Rice Crust,”
  310. complete!!
  311. f02: Nice!!
  312. f03: Wh…what!? Just what happened!?
  313. The sauce wasn’t poured over it, but came out by itself!! (What a lively kind of cuisine!!)
  314. That’s amazing…!!
  315. {small bubbles} chatter
  316. f04: Th…That’s an amazing dish…!!
  317. Grampa’s missing legendary dish is right in front of me…!!
  318. f05: Fufu…now…
  319.
  320. pg32
  321. f01: Yeah, that’s it…this unique crisp smell…!!
  322. f02: Eat before the sauce
  323. fully soaks into the crust…
  324.
  325. pg33
  326. f01: The rice crusts are perfectly fried to crisp,
  327. chatter / chatter
  328. the delicious parched yet pure taste that comes with each crunch…!!
  329. And as for the hot rich, rich sauce that covers it…!!
  330. Every drop of the vegetable’s flavours have been full released into it while / The beef in the sauce is the result of a heavenly combination of spices…!!
  331. There’s no difference…!! This is exactly what I ate 30 years ago…!!
  332. f02: But the warmth I feel from this dish…
  333. makes me feel that I’ve travelled back thirty years...
  334. f03: Kayuu-shifu never passed on this recipe to anyone before he died…
  335. and so this spectacular dish disappeared for a while…
  336. f04: Liu Mao Hsing was it…
  337. is it ok if you tell us the secret of this dish…!?
  338. f05: Yeah, please tell us!!
  339. How did you make that magical rice crust “ball”?
  340.
  341. pg34
  342. f01: chatter / chatter
  343. chatter
  344. chatter
  345. chatter
  346. f02: Wh…what…!!
  347. chatter / chatter
  348. What are these weird equipment used for…!?
  349. f03: Kayu-daishi was...
  350. a real genius…!!
  351. f04: When making the rice crusts,
  352. spread rice evenly on the inside surfaces of the two hemispheres—
  353. f05: <then put the hemispheres together and use the three chains to suspend the completed sphere on fire.>
  354. <Next, take out the rice crust—>
  355. <and then dunk into a pot of oil to deep fry.>
  356. f06: These steps,
  357. are all to make a spherical rice crust.
  358. f07: But the most shocking part—
  359. is that the sauce doesn’t come from outside, but stays inside.
  360. <rice crust / sauce>
  361.
  362. pg35
  363. f01: …But wait...
  364. If you just pour the sauce into it, isn’t the dish already completed?
  365. f02: To prevent that, you add beef, which is full of fat, to the insides.
  366. A lot of layers are needed.
  367. <beef / rice crust>
  368. f03: Like this, the beef can prevent the sauce from soaking into crusts,
  369. and it can also lengthen the time taken for the rice crust ball to crack.
  370. <sauce (add slowly) / a lid that also has beef layers>
  371. f04: I still don’t get it… / why would you put so much effort into putting sauce inside!?
  372. Pouring it over is the same.
  373. f05: It’s very different!!
  374. The insides of the rice crust ball is a locked system, / the pressure gradually increases, bringing out the best flavours of the ingredients in the sauce, so it tastes way better!!
  375. Also, the crusts only get covered at the last minute!!
  376. f06: When the beef layer can no longer withstand the pressure inside and breaks apart,
  377. the pressure begins to affect the crust layer, / and then—
  378.
  379. pg36
  380. f01: it too can no longer stand the pressure—
  381. causing it to break into halves.
  382. f02: I…I see…!!
  383. chatter
  384. That was the “magic trick” to this dish…!!
  385. chatter / chatter
  386. chatter
  387. f03: The spirit of creating new cuisine, / by breaking traditional methods and inventing new utensils—
  388. and the constant pursuing of a better-tasting food—
  389. f04: Kayu-taishi,
  390. was really an amazing chef!!
  391. f05: Yeah…
  392. That man— although he was old, his love for food did not lose to youngsters…!!
  393. f06: <When I first had "Open China Rice Crust,”>
  394. <I was twenty years old, feeling dejected after getting lost in the forest…>
  395. f07: Why so depressed!!
  396. This’ll boost your spirits up!!
  397.
  398. pg37
  399. f01: Uwah!
  400. f02: Wahaha!! As long as you have hope in your heart,
  401. even if you don’t have others’ support, you can go out with bang over time!!
  402. f03: Although I’m already eighty, I’m definitely not old!!
  403. I still have to make lots of yummy cuisine for other people, there’s no point in dying now!!
  404. f04: Ye…yes...!!
  405. f05: Indeed…he was a fascinating man…
  406. But…there’s someone even more fascinating than him in this world…
  407. f06: chatter / chatter
  408. f07: That’s you.
  409.
  410. pg38
  411. f01: You need talent,
  412. to make a new dish.
  413. f02: But — to revive a dish missing for thirty years without any clues,
  414. needs a lot of enthusiasm, because—
  415. f03: you have to impersonate someone,
  416. and have to try and understand their “soul”…!!
  417. f04: So…so it wasn’t because of good luck,
  418. but that his “enthusiasm” had shown him the method…!?
  419. f05: Mao…?
  420. f06: Why, when success was so unlikely,
  421. did you try so hard…?
  422. f07: That’s because…
  423.
  424. pg39
  425. f01: I didn’t want such a delicious “phantom” dish
  426. to become just a phrase in history.
  427. f02: His enthusiasm,
  428. has revived a dish that had long disappeared into the course of history…!!
  429. f03: Amazing…!!
  430.
  431. pg40
  432. f01: You requested a very talented chef to help you,
  433. Anri…
  434. f02: Yes…
  435. f03: Big-busted sis, / where are the stuff you promised Mao-bro…!!
  436. I…I know…!!
  437. f04: M…Miss Anri…
  438. Eh…?
  439. f05: I…
  440. being able to see Kayu-daishi’s cuisine is already enough of a reward for me…
  441. f06: You can use all this money to revamp the restaurant.
  442. f07: M…Mao…
  443.
  444. pg40
  445. f01: U…Um…
  446. Eh…?
  447. f02: To be honest…a few of the older customers,
  448. like to compare me to my father, so I don’t have much confidence…
  449. f03: But seeing you today, working hard at such an impossible task,
  450. I think I’m ready to pluck up my courage and start again…
  451. f04: Thanks….♡

  454. pg41 {haha….must I translate this…so much text!!}
  455. All of the stories in this volume were serialised in the monthly magazine, “Magazine Special.”
  456. Thanks to the first extra being popular, the editors at “Special,” allowed me to continue serialising in the monthly magazine. So you could say that this completed volume are all “extras” from Cooking Master Boy.
  457. In terms of serialisation, monthly deadlines are obviously more lax than weekly. The stories are not situated at Yang Spring Restaurant, making the drawing of other places rather entertaining. I’m full of energy as I draw each chapter. Hope you like this new-style of Cooking Master Boy.
  458. When “Cooking Master Boy” gets back to weekly serialisation, I plan to have Mao, with even better cooking skills, travel around the world once more. Please send comments and suggestions early in.

  460. In Guizhou and Yunnan regions of Mainland China, there’s quite a lot of ethnic groups. To show their uniqueness as a group, they put a lot of effort into their clothes. These clothes are usually very bright and leave a vivid memory afterwards.

  462. {Translation comment from me: I always loved this bit in the anime (and I guess this manga chapter too!). Anyone felt reeeealllly hungry when they saw this bit?? You usually feel pretty hungry reading this, but for me, this chapter makes me super hungry. :p ....Unfortunately this dish, unlike most in CMB, cannot be made.}
