  1. SEARCH can tell lies
  2. An Interactive Fiction by Jason McIntosh
  3. Release 1 / Serial number 130423 / Inform 7 build 6G60 (I6/v6.32 lib 6/12N) SD
  4.
  5. Bughouse
  6. This room demostrates a few cases where the library default response for SEARCH-ing a container or a surface can directly contradict authored story text. My recommended fix in all cases is to change the message to "You find nothing of interest," the same as the response to SEARCH-ing a plain object.
  7.
  8. A cafeteria tray sits on the floor. It supports an undescribed burrito. How mysterious! (TEST TRAY)
  9.
  10. A desk covered in irrelevant paperwork is here. It has a single drawer, which seems stuck open. (TEST DESK) and (TEST DRAWER)
  11.
  12. >test tray
  13. (Testing.)
  14.
  15. >[1] x burrito
  16. Jmac apparently was waiting for lunch when he was making this test game.
  17.
  18. >[2] search tray
  19. The default library message for searching a supporter shall now contradict the fact that it does in fact have an object on it, albeit an undescribed one.
  20.
  21. There is nothing on the tray.
  22.
  23. >[3] x tray
  24. Let's now make the burrito described.
  25.
  26. The tray is made of space-age polymers.
  27.
  28. On the tray is a burrito.
  29.
  30. >[4] search tray
  31. On the tray is a burrito.
  32.
  33. >test desk
  34. (Testing.)
  35.
  36. >[1] x desk
  37. The desk is utterly buried under irrelevant paperwork.
  38.
  39. >[2] x paperwork
  40. The desk is utterly buried under irrelevant paperwork.
  41.
  42. >[3] search desk
  43. The default library message for searching a supporter shall now contradict the desk's description.
  44.
  45. There is nothing on the desk.
  46.
  47. >test drawer
  48. (Testing.)
  49.
  50. >[1] x drawer
  51. Clearly a junk drawer. It overflows with odds and ends, none interesting.
  52.
  53. >[2] x junk
  54. There's nothing worthwhile among the stuff in the drawer.
  55.
  56. >[3] search junk
  57. You find nothing of interest.
  58.
  59. >[4] search drawer
  60. The default library message for searching a container shall now contradict the drawer's description (as well as the scenery object it contains).
  61.
  62. The drawer is empty.
