  3. Explain the benefits of a tall structure and relate it to Thorpe Park (Merlin).
  4. As Thorpe Park’s structure is tall, there will be a lot of benefits, for example there is precision within the company itself in the sense that jobs are easily understood and the company has great communication and can work very efficiently, tall structures also provide clear distinctive layers where the levels of responsibility and power fluctuate between the different departments.

  6. Explain the benefits of a flat structure and relate it to Specsavers.
  7. Specsavers structure on the other hand is flat. They benefit from using this structure as the structure itself offers a wider opportunity for employees to achieve promotion. Another benefit is that communication within the company is a lot quicker and also allows for easy statements between the flat structures. The company will fall closer to the democratic style between all of the current employees.

  9. Explain how the functional areas (Departments) help each firm achieve their purpose.
  10. The functional areas/departments help each firm achieve their purpose for example they will be achieved and completed as quickly and easily as they can be completed. For example Thorpe parks structural layout allows for departments to assist each other, like the retail and marketing team. The retail team will look after the sales whilst the marketing team will be creating and helping bring customers to the stores with clever marketing techniques.
  11.
  12. Explain how aims and targets are passed down the structure.
  13. Aims and targets are passed down the structure like a chain of command. At the top of this chain of command there will be directors and managers, these will deal out tasks and other jobs that will have to be completed within certain time frames. These roles are then passed down to the subordinates. The subordinates’ line manage the smaller divisions within the companies’ structure and the jobs passed to them are then allocated to employees within these certain sectors. This makes it easier for each sector to focus on specific jobs. Where they can be completed and the next jobs are ready to take on.
