  55. bosnak: With 8 days and few hours days left for the BRINK release we all wait anxiously. BRINK has been hyped up for the past few months and we can’t wait to get our hands on it and pull an all nighter.
  56. bosnak: Thanks to Gamers Portal for hosting this event and bringing all of here under one roof too have this discussion! I also think we can agree that the website looks pretty bad ass
  57. bosnak: Tonight we are having the very first BRINK: Round Table Discussion here at Gamers Portal, we are starting with our interview with our guests, and we will move to opening the chat for the audience to post any comments or questions afterwards. Tonight our featured guests are Zoidbergenstein, TecHNasty, Blackfoger, and Mattc0m.
  58. bosnak: Starting off this discussion we will be covering Gameplay - looking at the structure and strategy of BRINK
  59. blackfoger: thank you for having us
  60. zoidbergenstein: happy to be here :)
  61. TecHNaSTy: :-D
  62. bosnak: Thank you all for attending :)
  63. bosnak: A quick intro for our guests tonight...
  64. bosnak: Zoidbergenstein, or plain and simply as "Zoid" got his first real taste of competition in developer Splash Damage's first game, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory where he attended Quakecon for the Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory tournament at that time. From his success in Wolfenstein, Zoid has played for many well known organizations such as, pure, Area51, Check-Six, and currently will be playing for Core Gamers in Brink.
  65. Habibi: Hi zoid
  66. bosnak: TecHNaSTy, or “TecHie”, started his career in Quake 3 on the Quake 3 Fortress and Enemy Territory Fortress mod. Quickly he transferred to Team Fortress 2 upon its release where TecH’s career really blasted off. Playing for teams such as Eximius Sports, Dynamic, Check-Six, MoB Gaming, TecH gathered pro status experience. With first place finishes at many LANs such as Showdown, GXL, Intel LANfest, and PAX East – he proved he was legit. Winning championships in Team Fortress 2, Counterstrike, Monday Night Combat, and Left 4 Dead, TecH is now looking to add BRINK to his list.
  67. zoidbergenstein: hello
  68. bosnak: Blackfoger has been gaming and managing since 2001, being a professional player himself in CS:S, Guild Wars, and Star Wars: Battlefront 1, Blackfoger now runs Blight gaming fulltime and currently maintains over 12 teams feeding off of over hundreds of wins with the desire to be the best team in every division. Blight looks forward striking gold in the Brink competitive scene if it takes off.
  69. bosnak: After founding the ETQW shoutcasting website known as Enemy Territory TV in early 2008, Mattc0m has become a notable figure in e-sports after founding Quake Live TV, Games Cast TV, and now is working to develop Brink TV. With hundreds of hours both competing in and broadcasting Quake Wars, including at QuakeCon 2008 where he first met Splash Damage, he has been eagerly anticipating the launch of Brink.
  70. Mattc0m: Thanks for the intro, bosnak.
  71. Habibi: By the way folks, you can resize the channel to make it easier to read (hover over the type right window)
  72. bosnak: Let's get this rolling, a question for all - Previous Splash Damage games RTCW, and WOLF:ET have been run in Stopwatch mainly, what gametypes do we know for BRINK?
  73. Mattc0m: So Splash Damage has said that Stopwatch will be making a reappearance, and it's been the norm of competitive gaming in previous titles. I think the key difference this time, however, is that time limits will be per objective, not for the entire map.
  74. Mattc0m: Essentially, if you fail to complete an objective within the time limit, you lose the map. The big difference was in a game like ETQW, there could be a full hold on the first objective for 20 minutes. This isn't fun to watch or play in.
  75. Mattc0m: So having tighter controls on time limits will definitely make Stopwatch play a bit more smooth and from a spectator's angle, it's more fun to watch.
  76. zoidbergenstein: i definitely agree
  77. TecHNaSTy: couldn't have said it any better
  78. zoidbergenstein: watching a match that stops at the first objective for 20 minutes isnt fun for spectators
  79. bosnak: It can definitely create that fast-paced action players like to see by dividing the time up
  80. bosnak: This can definitely involve much more stratting time for teams
  81. zoidbergenstein: and fast paced action is what makes these games so much fun to watch
  82. bosnak: With the new bodytypes, what benefits do we know of?
  83. zoidbergenstein: well
  84. zoidbergenstein: each body type definitely has its perks
  85. zoidbergenstein: we have had alot of long discussions about whats going to be viable for play
  86. bosnak: Go ahead and break them down for us please
  87. zoidbergenstein: and the heavy has those giant weapons that can kill fast, but seems a bit slow for pushes
  88. zoidbergenstein: imo the heavy will be a defensive staple point
  89. blackfoger: yes I am not too familiar with them so please break it for me
  90. zoidbergenstein: mediums are what i believe will be the most played class in brink
  91. zoidbergenstein: they get powerful weapons
  92. zoidbergenstein: have a medium hp pool
  93. zoidbergenstein: and can move at the speed most of us are used to
  94. zoidbergenstein: lights on the other hand may not pack as much of a punch
  95. zoidbergenstein: and may die a little quicker
  96. blackfoger: is the combat better then ET ? as far as mechanics?
  97. blackfoger: on that note
  98. zoidbergenstein: but you cant deny the fact that getting an extra push with the bonus movement speed is a huge advantage
  99. bosnak: So in all of your opinions, what could be an ideal setup for an objective push to get to that objective and finish it
  100. TecHNaSTy: i believe allowing the different body types will give players from all different spectrums of FPS a chance to play with a style they are used to
  101. bosnak: With bodytypes and classes
  102. TecHNaSTy: well personally a quick push with lights could open up many opporitunities
  103. Mattc0m: Is it me, or do you feel people will try to over-use the "Skinny" body class within the first few weeks, until people begin to realize that it's not a winning strategy?
  104. blackfoger: so the body types are a mimic of TF2
  105. Mattc0m: Or do you feel teams and players will use the entire range of body types and have a good balance from the get go?
  106. TecHNaSTy: i feel the light will be over used
  107. TecHNaSTy: people will want to get into the action quickly
  108. TecHNaSTy: but when they realize that they aren't going to be able to run into a group of 5 people
  109. zoidbergenstein: i think the smart movement looks so cool that alot of people will want to use lights early on, but i dont think it will be terribly effective to stack a team with them
  110. TecHNaSTy: they will rethink their strategy :p
  111. TecHNaSTy: the light will be an amazing class for quick flanks, and distractions
  112. blackfoger: the smart movement is what is going to really set this game apart plain and simple to make it big in Esports.
  113. TecHNaSTy: when people use it for those elements, they will find it to be more productive
  114. bosnak: We will end our Game play discussion here and open it up for our audience to chime in with questions!
  115. Habibi: I've jotted down a few questions as the discussion was happening
  116. Habibi: Okay heres one
  117. Habibi: NJAG_PATRiOT_SCO: What do you think about BRINK's team-based combat? Do you think it will work well, and influence gamers to communicate well as a team to reap the rewards? Or will they stray away from the crowd to do their own thing?
  118. Habibi: Who wants to field this one?
  119. zoidbergenstein: well team based play wins
  120. zoidbergenstein: pure and simple
  121. blackfoger: Any team game really is based one the team chemistry not alot of games can rely on one person to carry 4 other players...
  122. zoidbergenstein: it doesnt matter what game you play there will always be people who run off and do their own thing
  123. Mattc0m: BRINK's focus on team-based gameplay is nothing new. The "new features" such as the objective wheel are aimed at casual gamers.
  124. zoidbergenstein: but in a 5v5 game if you dont work your multi angle pushes, your crossfires, and your overall synergy you wont win
  125. blackfoger: also depends on team strategies. I have seen some teams expect a push from one persons performance
  126. TecHNaSTy: well a lot of pushes are going to be based off of an opening move
  127. TecHNaSTy: a certain player goes in first, or if a certain player is taken down
  128. Mattc0m: 5-man medic rushes ;)
  129. TecHNaSTy: then the rest of the push goes into effect
  130. TecHNaSTy: :) :)
  131. zoidbergenstein: there was nothing better than a med revive push in w:et :)
  132. blackfoger: sorry about that somehow went into GP twitter lol.
  133. blackfoger: 5 heavy turtles ugg
  134. Habibi: another question
  135. Habibi: sYnceD: Zoid, coming from the comp scene of ET:Wolf, what do you think will be similar? Don't say the obvious we already know Stopwatch is in it etc. Something new, how does brink draw you in besides it being made by SD.
  136. zoidbergenstein: amazing question
  137. zoidbergenstein: brink has so many new aspects that were going to have to include in strats
  138. zoidbergenstein: but the things that stand out to me that are similar to w:et (the greatest game ever)
  139. zoidbergenstein: is the fact that this is a team based objective game
  140. zoidbergenstein: even the new things simply make the game more based on working with your team
  141. zoidbergenstein: the combination of a heavy soldier working with a light eng to adrenaline rush an objective
  142. zoidbergenstein: the crossfires and gibs that you need with the revive additions to the game
  143. zoidbergenstein: those are the kind of things that stick out to me as the key factors to make this game similar to wolfenstein
  144. zoidbergenstein: hope that was what you were looking for
  145. Habibi: awesome thx zoid
  146. Habibi: next one
  147. Habibi: G2Wolf: Do you guys believe that there will be any size limits (1 heavy for example) or any class limits (2 soldier limit)?
  148. TecHNaSTy: well i think the first few tournaments will be used to figure out what is "over powered" or needs to be balanced competitively
  149. blackfoger: Defiantly as players find cheesy builds there will be mods that set up class limits
  150. TecHNaSTy: and it's possible that classes may be limited (more probable)
  151. TecHNaSTy: but in the long run i see teams using what is necessary to adapt to any sort of attack/defense and allowing any strategy teams want to go with
  152. Mattc0m: From ETQW, there were no class restrictions. It will likely be the same way in Brink. While classes and sizes aren't over-powered, some weapons are (notable "heavy weapons"). So if anything, there may be a limit on certain power weapons like Grenader Launchers.
  153. Mattc0m: So with any luck we'll see as few restrictions as possible.
  154. blackfoger: Depends if brink has DLC that improves each class for more balances
  155. Habibi: thats all the questions for now, we will move on to modding and then field more questions
  156. bosnak: As we are talking about restrictions and limits - we might as well hop on the topic Modding/Mod Tools/ etc.. start it off for users who might not know - What is modding?
  157. zoidbergenstein: modding is basically making maps for competition and altering the game slightly to make it more suitable for competition
  158. bosnak: Overall modding is seen as a positive tool in competition - is there any news on mod tools yet?
  159. zoidbergenstein: at first were going to see the server side cvars as a substitute for modding
  160. zoidbergenstein: but this community has highly talented modders who have made the pro mods in the past, and if given the tools i expect them to come through with more great pro mods for brink
  161. Mattc0m: With no SDK announcements yet, it's hard to speculate when / if that will happen. This is also a multi-console game, which could make a robust PC SDK harder to develop. I'm hoping we see an SDK close to launch.
  162. Mattc0m: SDK for those who don't know are a source development kit, which is essentially "tools for modders"
  163. Habibi: question!
  164. Habibi: IJX89: With Brink's SMART System how will that effect you as a player on defending an objective or area.
  165. blackfoger: go ahead
  166. zoidbergenstein: ill chip in on this one too cause im really really excited to see what its capable of
  167. zoidbergenstein: everything in stopwatch is based on time
  168. zoidbergenstein: and obviously if you can cut your time getting to an objective down your going to put yourself at an advantage
  169. zoidbergenstein: the difference between getting to an objective a few seconds earlier can be huge
  170. TecHNaSTy: with the different class sizes and abilities you'll have to figure out what you want to sacrifice, and what you will want to gain as an offender, or defender... it gives players the ability to focus their game style and use it to their advantage, the smart system will give them a chance to allow many other attack routes... defensive positions etc.. being able to change your class quickly will also allow you to change strategies very quickly and adapt to situations
  171. Mattc0m: The real cool thing about this is that maps become a much more important part of strategy, but also open up a ton of challenges. I like to draw a comparison to Quake Live and Call of Duty. In Quake, the maps have a ton of vertical, horizontal, and flanking positions and maneuvers you have to take account for. In Call of Duty, it's a largely horizontal game -- targets are directly in front of you. Brink has the ability to make maps far more interesting androbust.
  172. Mattc0m: I definitely would say that SMART favors the offensive team, however I do see defenders utilize interesting positions, coordinated flanks, and more position-orientated strategies.
  173. TecHNaSTy: agreed
  174. bosnak: With as much exposure past Splash Damage games have had at QuakeCon, we have the honor to have Mattc0m, from BRINK TV bring his talents to broadcasting BRINK competitions. Matt, what is BRINK TV?
  175. Mattc0m: Just to briefly summarize it, Brink TV is a shoutcasting service focused on Brink. Our team has worked on Enemy Territory TV in the past, which has given us amazing insight with the community of Brink, as well as the developers, Splash Damage.
  176. Mattc0m: We've also worked together on Quake Live TV, which is a huge resource for Quake Live shoutcasts, especially in the NA scene.
  177. Mattc0m: Personally I'm the web designer, founder, and also will be return as a shoutcaster for Brink TV :)
  178. bosnak: Delementary: is brink tv a feature only for pc?
  179. Habibi: very relevant question there.
  180. Mattc0m: Brink TV is not a game feature, it's a shoutcasting organization. If he is referring to TV servers being included in the game, there has been no announcement on that and is highly unlikely.
  181. Mattc0m: What we focus on is bringing live commentary of professional-level games to the masses, it's an experience similar to watching ESPN cover a sporting event.
  182. bosnak: Matt, do you think you will be at Quakecon this year?
  183. Mattc0m: We plan on going to QuakeCon every year, whether we'll be the official shoutcasting crew is really up to Bethesda to decide. But we hope so!
  184. Mattc0m: We'll be there as Brink TV and Quake Live TV, the staff being largely the same key people.
  185. bosnak: There are users wondering about console coverage for BRINK TV, can you give them a quick answer on that?
  186. Mattc0m: Yes, we've got this question a lot. We're not covering the competitive scene of consoles at this time. Not only is there no real competitive community on the consoles yet, but there may not even be spectator features.
  187. bosnak: Thank you Matt
  188. bosnak: We have our broadcasting, now onto match play. We received news of dedicated servers this past week, let’s cover some of the details
  189. bosnak: Who can host dedicated servers?
  190. zoidbergenstein: thats a good one
  191. zoidbergenstein: they recently announced that dedicated server files ship may 9th
  192. TecHNaSTy: it's files that are downloadable and will make more dedicated servers possible
  193. bosnak: When you say the server files ship May 9th, is that all a user needs to host a dedicated server?
  194. About 1 minute ago, 07:47 PM
  195. Mattc0m: The real key is that there's no "official server providers" that have a lock down on the "ranked" servers, which ended up being what everyone wanted to play on. Anyone can have servers that are considered "ranked" as long as the rules are similar to (but not identical) to the default config.
  196. Mattc0m: Even modded content will be able to have its place on a "ranked" server, now, allowing a more robust third-party mod community (yay!)
  197. zoidbergenstein: yes, thats all the need to host a dedicated server
  198. bosnak: We are picking user questions...just a minute.
  199. Habibi: question!
  200. Habibi: Blob: Do you believe Brink TV will do something like what Gamereplays does, and have a tip of the week or something of the sort?
  201. Mattc0m: Yeah, we do plan on stuff like that. Having feedback from the competitive community is key to what we're doing, and we want to present tips that only geared at hardcore competitive gamers, but also casual gamers.
  202. Habibi: awesome, thanks matt
  203. Habibi: 1 more question and we will move on once more
  204. Habibi: Kung120: What about melees? Whats stopping them from being like COD?\
  205. TecHNaSTy: one thing i'd like to add about watching broadcasts, is usually a casual player can see what the competitive players mindset is through casting, it allows players to pick it up quicker and reach a higher potential
  206. Mattc0m: This is true, it's a good bridge.
  207. Habibi: Anyone to answer the melee question?
  208. Habibi: Kung120: What about meeles? whats stopping them from being like COD?
  209. Mattc0m: If you watch the second SMART training video, you can see what melee is all about. Essentially, it's not a one-hit kill, but it knocks a person over (and they can shoot back at you, and get back up after a few seconds)
  210. Mattc0m: Another type of melee is a knife, which you can use if you have a pistol. It does more damage, but doesn't knock them over.
  211. Mattc0m: It'll likely take 2-3 melees to kill a person.
  212. Mattc0m: In COD, all knifes are a single-hit kill.
  213. Mattc0m: So it's completely different.
  214. TecHNaSTy: i feel the melee is going to be used more to help you out against multiple players in a "down one player then kill the other" kind of way
  215. TecHNaSTy: instead of the one shot kill aspect
  216. bosnak: stoenrmonkey: can you still kill a player with a single headshot like many other games?
  217. Habibi: oo good question
  218. zoidbergenstein: thats one thats been talked about alot
  219. zoidbergenstein: short answer not really
  220. zoidbergenstein: an unbuffed light can die in one headshot from a sniper rifle
  221. zoidbergenstein: but these games are all about trace aim
  222. zoidbergenstein: so they want you to be able to hit multiple head shots
  223. zoidbergenstein: by trace aim i mean the ability to track someones head with your crosshair
  224. Habibi: trace aim is harddd to doooo
  225. bosnak: As we have seen first-hand, Gamers Portal is a great place to have a community come together and talk. With tools like clan pages, clan forums, event updates, gamer chat, Gamers Portal brings all types of gamers together. Let's talk to the co-founder, Habibi and learn some more..
  226. bosnak: Habibi, are you a gamer yourself? What games have you played?
  227. Habibi: Ummmmm
  228. Habibi: Yeah, i would say i'm definitely a gamer
  229. Habibi: I've spent the majority of my life playing games, mainly Unreal tournament 99/2k3/2k4 and UT3
  230. Habibi: (yes, i am a UT fan)
  231. Habibi: Also played some cod4 competitively, looking forward to brink
  232. bosnak: Where did you get the idea for Gamers Portal?
  233. Habibi: Ahhh, well, that was a few years ago.
  234. Habibi: I used to run my own clan called "male modelz". yes yes i know, but i thought the name was unique
  235. Habibi: My clan had a website which hosted the IG (instagib) communities user photos. and it got really popular
  236. Habibi: It was clear gamers wanted to see the faces of the people they play with everyday, and get to know them better
  237. Habibi: and that's how this got started!
  238. Habibi: Lunarfox: Go do your little turn on the catwalk
  239. Habibi: Lol =]
  240. bosnak: Great starting so far, I have been here as much as Facebook. What is your overall goal for Gamers Portal?
  241. Habibi: O geez, well thats a good question
  242. Habibi: Our goal is an ambitious one really...trying to give all gamers, no matter the genre of game or the platform, a place to chat, communicate and share content.
  243. Habibi: We're currently in private alpha right now, but we're working very hard to release new features every day.
  244. bosnak: Thank you - Good Luck with everything.
  245. Habibi: Ty sir
  246. blackfoger: the website is very nice for just alpha coding
  247. bosnak: Now to move on to the juice of the discussion. PlayIGL will be hosting a cup on May 24th at check out www.playigl.com we are aiming to found out "What stinks!" in BRINK so we can have a solid competitive environment. Registration is now open, and currently 20 teams signed up pre- release! We are working on prizes at the moment.
  248. bosnak: Tracking back to QuakeCon, what are we seeing for BRINK at LANs? any news?
  249. zoidbergenstein: as far as lans
  250. zoidbergenstein: there havent been any official announcement
  251. zoidbergenstein: but were all pretty eager to find out if we have a chance to go back to qcon
  252. Mattc0m: It'll be at QuakeCon, for sure, whether as an official tournament, a BYOC game, or featured in booths is really unknown.
  253. TecHNaSTy: same:)
  254. Mattc0m: But at the very least they'll be a lot of BYOC action, and probably a few tournaments, so that's a great place for the competitive Brink gamer to go to.
  255. bosnak: As a gamer, Zoid/Tech/Black - what's it like gaming at a LAN for cash? What was your first LAN like? Nervous?
  256. TecHNaSTy: from what i've heard, many people who run the tournaments at lans are excited about Brink and would really like to be able to get tournaments going :)
  257. zoidbergenstein: my first major lan was w:et at quakecon
  258. zoidbergenstein: and yes i was pretty nervous
  259. blackfoger: everyone has big nerves their first lan its just who can calm them the first time or 2nd time
  260. zoidbergenstein: but we got the amazing oppurtunity to bootcamp with crossfire's w:et team and they really helped us to settle our nerves
  261. zoidbergenstein: @mojo unless people tear urinals out of the wall i love the anatole :)
  262. bosnak: So as of right now no official news on LANs for BRINK, waiting on the news for BRINK being in attendance for Quakecon
  263. Habibi: alright
  264. Habibi: here is a big question
  265. Habibi: DennisTheMenace: Aside from LANs and sponsors being the most obvious choice; how did W:ET/ ETQW survive as a competitive game? The major plus-sides that helped it grow, and the mistakes that caused declines; how do you expect the competitive community to keep the game growing? Highlight videos? Just peer-to-peer discussion? Anything out of the ordinary? If so, how much publicity the game could get? There has been talk of Quakecon hosting Brink, that will surely open eyes if the tops teams that can generate some exciting matches could inspire people. I know if there is a brink tournament at Quakecon and if it is successful, could highlight videos also be the trick
  266. blackfoger: as far as lans I am mainly hearing people are just waiting
  267. zoidbergenstein: thats another really good question and covers a ton
  268. zoidbergenstein: im just going to touch on a little bit of it
  269. Habibi: too much maybe, limit the questions a bit folks :p
  270. Mattc0m: I just want to say that Brink TV shares a goal of creating a large, positive, and fun competitive community for Brink. We want tons of fun, live content for people to watch and support the competitive community, even if their not part of it.
  271. zoidbergenstein: w:et survived as a competitive game because it was amazing gameplay
  272. zoidbergenstein: if a game has great gameplay then people are going to play it
  273. Mattc0m: Like Technasty mentioned early, competitive shoutcasts are a great bridge between the casual and competitive gamers, and allows the community to kind of come together. And if regular Brink gamers know about and support the competitive community, that's a great starting point.
  274. zoidbergenstein: people also stuck with w:et, if you load up an etmain server right now on unpatched w:et its not going to impress you
  275. bosnak: Wolfenstein: ET was free and a great game
  276. zoidbergenstein: but that game patched with a promod is amazing
  277. Mattc0m: However, the bigger question of how to turn Brink into an e-sports is incredibly tricky and probably a bit too lofty of a goal. That's something that begins to be discussed after 5 or 6 active, huge, and entertaining competitive seasons. So for now we should focus on things like tournaments, shoutcasts, etc. and hopefully, with success, discussiongs about a Brink e-sports scene can develop.
  278. TecHNaSTy: highlight videos/frag videos are always a huge boost to the community... When you watch frag videos you see things that make the game exciting... even if you dont play the game... usually there is still intrigue in trying to perform to that level as well. Players always enjoy being able to make compilations of their best clips. I know i love watching them
  279. bosnak: crunks: Is the PC Version Ported from consoles?
  280. Mattc0m: No, it's not.
  281. TecHNaSTy: i've heard ends, that it's PC first then ported to console, and i've heard the opposite
  282. Mattc0m: I feel that anyone who is claiming an id tech technology is ported FROM a console doesn't know too much about what the game is developed on, or whom is developing it. Splash Damage are all long-time PC gamers, who got their start as a Quake modding team.
  283. TecHNaSTy: but i'm going to agree with Matt since everytime he says something, it's usually correct
  284. Habibi: haha
  285. Habibi: Drewtime: With the mobility of SMART, do you think 2 lights will be able to make simple tactical maneuvers on the map to win in a fire fight, or will it mostly be a stop-and-shoot till the other player is down, sort of thing.
  286. Habibi: thats another question there!
  287. Habibi: Thanks again for the questions folks, i will try and ask as many as there is time for
  288. zoidbergenstein: in any of these games if you stop and shoot your going to lose every fire fight
  289. zoidbergenstein: movement is huge in idtech games
  290. TecHNaSTy: i think given the provided obsticles and terrain, yes... but trying to base your fight off of these maneuvers can also have a very negative effect on you
  291. Mattc0m: Movement is going to be key, like in Quake games of past. SMART just makes the movement more approachable to new gamers, whilst hardcore gamers can use the movement system without relying on SMART
  292. Habibi: lschiss16: Are there going to be any competitive leagues on consoles, or do you predict that they will be limited to PCs
  293. zoidbergenstein: well im definitely based in pc gaming
  294. Habibi: good question
  295. zoidbergenstein: its all ive done
  296. blackfoger: CEVO for sure
  297. zoidbergenstein: but if the game has a community there will be competition
  298. blackfoger: will at least do PC and maybe console
  299. Mattc0m: There was a brief discussion in the general chat, and MLG and GameBattles seem to be the keys for success if you're a console gamer. I'm really not familiar with the competitive console scene, however.
  300. TecHNaSTy: judging from PAX East xbox had a strong following in their console room with tournaments
  301. Mattc0m: As for PC, there's IGL, TWL, and CSN that have already made announcements.
  302. Mattc0m: I think Clanbase will be short to follow with an annoucnement
  303. TecHNaSTy: so it's likely to see some future lan tournaments on console, but i doubt they will surpass the PC competitions
  304. Habibi: Yeah, consoles have always been strong in bringing in tournaments and prizes
  305. Mattc0m: As for ESL, CEVO, and other, larger organizations... I think time will tell.
  306. bosnak: Awesome questions guys, keep them coming.
  307. blackfoger: quakecomn hopefully
  308. Mattc0m: QuakeCon will see some sort of competitive Brink action :D
  309. Mattc0m: Just hopefully outside of BYOC ;)
  310. Habibi: Alright
  311. bosnak: As far as playing competitively for BRINK, we have seen past Splash Damage games having a huge scripting community. For users who don't know what Scripting is, and since we have talked about this previously Zoid, what is scripting?
  312. zoidbergenstein: scripting is altering your config to do things for you
  313. blackfoger: shortcuts
  314. zoidbergenstein: it can be anywhere from spawn scripts, to change your class and spawn location
  315. bosnak: For all the players, what are some scripts? CS:S, TF2, anything?
  316. bosnak: From those titles
  317. zoidbergenstein: to no recoild scripts, trick jump scripts, 180 turn scripts
  318. zoidbergenstein: all at the push of a button
  319. TecHNaSTy: scripts are good for allowing people to do difficult tasks easier, although scripting also gets to a point where it is unbalanced
  320. TecHNaSTy: in TF2 there are rocket jump scripts in tf2
  321. bosnak: So how do you decide what is legal, and what is not?
  322. TecHNaSTy: as well as pistol scripts for scout
  323. TecHNaSTy: and at one point the pistol shot almost as fast as you could click
  324. TecHNaSTy: so when that script came out, the scout pistol was over powered
  325. zoidbergenstein: in the past in w:et if a script made you better it wasnt allowed
  326. TecHNaSTy: but was banned competitively
  327. zoidbergenstein: so spawn scripts were allowed
  328. zoidbergenstein: but others were not
  329. bosnak: On terms of legal or not, and controlling it here's a great question - ZiiP Jester: Are you guys happy that Brink is said to use VAC over PB?
  330. Mattc0m: PunkBuster is an outdated piece of junk that has lived well past its prime, and also had more mis-reads than actual hacks. It also was infamously buggy and caused more brain-aches than any other anti-cheat software to date.
  331. zoidbergenstein: i recently punkbuster has become pretty bad
  332. TecHNaSTy: i am very pleased with this, like Matt said, i've heard nothing but complaints about punkbuster
  333. TecHNaSTy: and had to listen to many people crying about punkbuster updates for hours on end
  334. TecHNaSTy: i rememeber getting kicked from a competitive finals match in ETF for "changing my name to quickly" gg punkbuster
  335. Habibi: lol
  336. bosnak: But on the other hand, have we seen VAC actually do ANYTHING?
  337. zoidbergenstein: my last straw with punkbuster was the disallowed driver issue with overlays
  338. Habibi: Tech, did they allow a rematch because of that ?
  339. Habibi: Did you lose?
  340. TecHNaSTy: i just reconnected, it took 5 seconds total :p
  341. zoidbergenstein: cinna does bring up a good point, i did anti cheat for w:et and it did make finding aliases of banned players much easier
  342. TecHNaSTy: we did win though :)
  343. Habibi: Ahh , congrats :p
  344. bosnak: From what we know now, with help of Demo or "record" catches hackers for matches
  345. bosnak: Are we going to see that option in BRINL?
  346. bosnak: BRINK*
  347. TecHNaSTy: demos have to be in brink
  348. TecHNaSTy: if they aren't
  349. TecHNaSTy: that would be stupid
  350. TecHNaSTy: point blank
  351. Habibi: yeah, i think demos are important for community made content as well
  352. Habibi: i believe that helps the game succeed as well when community members are releasing a lot of fan made videos
  353. Habibi: wesus: i have a counter for brink, 8 days 4 hours and 24 minuets until its released here! you excited?
  354. Habibi: Yes, we're all excited =]
  355. blackfoger: yeyew
  356. bosnak: In past games during offensive/defensive strategies we have seen "/kill" or "kill" commands - which causes a player to suicide in during gameplay being used frequently. Do you think this will apply for BRINK and carry over to BRINK?
  357. zoidbergenstein: absolutely
  358. zoidbergenstein: killing out is a huge part of any successful teams strategies
  359. zoidbergenstein: for people who dont know these games play on wave respawns
  360. zoidbergenstein: so offense spawns every 20 seconds
  361. zoidbergenstein: defense every 30
  362. Mattc0m: This is really all speculation right now, there's been no word if /kill is included
  363. Mattc0m: or if there is even a console you can use to setup binds or scripts.
  364. zoidbergenstein: if your on defense and get killed with 29 seconds on the time
  365. zoidbergenstein: you can easily lose the objective
  366. zoidbergenstein: the same goes for offense
  367. bosnak: So what do we have to say about NA v EU cups, leagues - any competition at all?
  368. blackfoger: NA always
  369. Mattc0m: EU is largely more competitive because there's a ton more people living there.
  370. zoidbergenstein: na vs eu has always been big in this scene and the majority of the time NA has been down
  371. About 1 minute ago, 08:41 PM
  372. TecHNaSTy: there will always be the rivalry, we'll see where it goes, it brings people together nationally
  373. Mattc0m: NA is difficult because there's a much smaller pool of gamers, and while there is a community, EU communities tend to be bigger and have a higher skill level.
  374. TecHNaSTy: although with games like this... all-star games wont work since it's all teamwork based
  375. Mattc0m: This is pretty evident with past Splash Damage titles, and a lot of PC competitive titles.
  376. bosnak: Would you say EU always has the better gamers?
  377. TecHNaSTy: no
  378. Mattc0m: Nope, just more gamers.
  379. zoidbergenstein: definitely not always
  380. TecHNaSTy: EU has better support
  381. bosnak: So we'll have to prove that NA > EU with some cups and league play eh ;)
  382. TecHNaSTy: it really all depends on who's playing
  383. TecHNaSTy: its like koreans with starcraft
  384. TecHNaSTy: they are amazing
  385. zoidbergenstein: i would love to do that :)
  386. TecHNaSTy: but in other games like FPS
  387. TecHNaSTy: they aren't as efficient
  388. blackfoger: idk depends on the game
  389. blackfoger: EU has so much more lans and support but yes may have better teams as far as certain areas
  390. bosnak: Blackfoger, what does it take to make the best team for an FPS?
  391. bosnak: As the owner of Blight Gaming, you must be very selective with your rosters.
  392. blackfoger: good question its about understandiung the game and learning quickly
  393. blackfoger: we have players that switch from fighters to fps to RTs and just learnt he game mechanics well
  394. bosnak: What piece of advice would you offer to other clans or clan leaders to reach their full potential?
  395. blackfoger: practice hard
  396. Habibi: anything else foger?
  397. blackfoger: basically alot of SC2 players could go more indepth just understand the game adapt
  398. blackfoger: you will see good strat callers in FPS games learn why they are losing and adjust strats
  399. blackfoger: technasty knows what I am saying as far as TF2 you find out what is causing pressure and readjust the team
  400. blackfoger: there are CGS players that were able to switch from 1.6 to CSS with no problem because of that
  401. TecHNaSTy: it's all about team chemistry and knowing what the players on your team will do b4 they do it.. and having confidence in your team as well
  402. Habibi: alright
  403. Habibi: a coupole of more questions
  404. Habibi: apoc: Do you think the large list of abilities will have a place in competitive matches or do you think comp comunities will opt for the barebones aproach and ban them?
  405. Habibi: That's an interesting one
  406. Habibi: (they are all interesting! :) just need moar time!)
  407. zoidbergenstein: my gut personal reaction is that i dont like them for competition, but imo a game should be played in competition as close as possible to the way it was designed
  408. TecHNaSTy: i believe smaller tournaments will go barebones... but more mainstream high level competition will allow abilities
  409. TecHNaSTy: the real question lies in what abilities out of the large list... will be allowed
  410. zoidbergenstein: for a game to succeed it needs pub teams to be able to smoothely transition to competition, to help make that happen the game needs to be as close as possible to the original creation
  411. zoidbergenstein: the only things i think should be taken out are game breaking issues of balance
  412. blackfoger: exactly
  413. TecHNaSTy: and they should add rocket launchers :)
  414. bosnak: While we are still here, what do you guys think about this event and Gamers Portal? Do you see yourself making use of it?
  415. Habibi: Mattc0m is experiencing some technical difficulties, he will try hopping back on asap**
  416. zoidbergenstein: i really enjoy gamersportal
  417. zoidbergenstein: im usually on here lurking, popping in after practice to make stupid comments no one finds amusing or something like that
  418. Habibi: lol
  419. bosnak: I've been on here for a couple weeks now, added new friends, and started my clan page for all of us to chat and post availabilities/ phone numbers on, smooth and fast too :)
  420. zoidbergenstein: <3 the map too
  421. TecHNaSTy: i find it interesting when you can actually see what the other top gamers from other games look like and get to talk to them about other games coming out
  422. blackfoger: I really like the coding for just the alpha of the website
  423. blackfoger: works smooth and nice
  424. bosnak: Yes, a lot more to come as well
  425. Habibi: Ah, thanks guys. its an alpha, we got lots more coming.
  426. Habibi: One of the biggest features incoming in the next couple of days is "free agents" . Gamers looking to find a clan will be able to set themselves as a free agent and look for recruiting clans. Clans at the same time will be able to find ppl looking for a team!
  427. Habibi: Anyway, appreciate it, we got time for a couple of more quesitons i think
  428. blackfoger: hmm
  429. blackfoger: how big of a userbase you got atm?
  430. Habibi: about 2.5 k testers at the moment :)
  431. Habibi: alright heres a question from the audience!
  432. Habibi: sublime74: will we wolfenstein and quakewars players miss the ability to leave dropped supplies at the front of combat while we go do something else or while we are dead, so we can passively help the team?
  433. zoidbergenstein: well i definitely enjoyed being able to pack up and corner camp in w:et and etqw
  434. zoidbergenstein: but i think with everything brink brings to the table it wont be that noticeable
  435. Habibi: ah
  436. Habibi: one more question:
  437. Habibi: crvoax: any predictions on what type of mods we might see based on your past experience?
  438. zoidbergenstein: i would definitely expect to see some sort of pro mod out
  439. TecHNaSTy: it's hard to say what type of mods will be made, usually there is a group that focuses on the competitive stand point, other groups will focus on making pubs more fun....
  440. TecHNaSTy: other times for example a whole new game can come out of a mod
  441. TecHNaSTy: as in Q3F & ETF
  442. Habibi: pro mod = ?
  443. Habibi: just so everyone is aware
  444. TecHNaSTy: if you played either of those, although on the q3 engine it didn't feel anywhere near the same
  445. TecHNaSTy: pro mod is usually what they make for a game to be best fitted for the competitive audience
  446. TecHNaSTy: usually made for tournaments, allows better spectating abilities for casts
  447. TecHNaSTy: and makes it an all around better game for competition
  448. Habibi: NJAG_PATRiOT_SCO: How do you think BRINK will compete in the sea of games that define the FPS genre? Will BRINK float alongside COD and Battlefield? Will it surpass expectations and live up to the Quake legacy? Or will it simply sink?
  449. Habibi: We're going to wrap this up right after this question
  450. Mattc0m: It's been a pleasure discussing Brink with you gentlemen, I hope future discussions we can have available, openly, to the Brink community at large. And while GamersPortal has done a service to present a Brink roundtable discussion, I hope if there is a future roundtable that is not a gimmick to drive signups and discuss feature sof the site, but instead a legitimiate conversation with the community.
  451. blackfoger: np
  452. zoidbergenstein: i fimrly believe that brink has the hype to be huge, but i also think that for a community to take off its members need to play a large role in helping it get there
  453. zoidbergenstein: so with enough support and good gameplay i think brink has the potential to be huge
  454. TecHNaSTy: brink i believe will surpass what most think, it really relies on the developers, they need to keep making the changes
  455. TecHNaSTy: and the adjustments to the game to fit how the game works in the current time period
  456. bosnak: To wrap this up look out for the next Round-Table discussion a couple weeks after the BRINK release. The next discussion should be streamed via voice to make it a little bit more entertaining, exciting and attract more viewers to give you the chance to VOICE your QUESTION LIVE! SEE YOU THERE!
  457. Habibi: A quick word
  458. bosnak: Thank you Zoid, Tech, Blackfoger, Mattc0m for attending
  459. bosnak: and for your time
