  94. Bio:
  95. Esther was a girl of no particular note when the king of Izarra ordered the attack on their neighbor. Her family lived decently, making ends meet with the income from her mother’s apothecary. Her father Cedric was a more magically-inclined man, a dark mage of renown - many said he was the equal if not the superior of Mordo’s greatest dark mages. He was often buried in his books, researching forgotten magic, but at heart he was a family man - Esther considered him her greatest friend throughout her youth.
  96.
  97. She admired him to such a point that she pursued the same field, following his footsteps despite Izzara’s lack of magical schools - especially for dark mages. She felt the power in the arcane ancient tomes, and found she quite liked the feeling. She wasn’t half the mage her father was but she didn’t doubt that she would be in time.
  98.
  99. And then came the king’s apparent madness. Many of the men in her village left to fight at their lord’s command, although Cedric did not. “I am my own lord.” was her father’s justification. And while this saved her family from the tragedy of losing him in the war, it allowed for a later one. Esther was home when the soldiers came. The occupation in her area was a violent one, and soldiers came demanding that her father come with them - an arcanist of his caliber would be of great use to Mordo.
  100.
  101. He initially refused - his family needed him, and he could do what research he wished where he was. The captain of the men had orders, however. He ordered the men to take him by force. Of course, assaulting a man like him was a poor choice - blood spattered the walls of the home. They were well into the fighting when a blade was held to Esther’s throat, as she’d been watching from the stair.
  102.
  103. The fighting immediately ceased. Cedric surrendered, fearing for the lives of his wife and child. If they would be left alive he would go without a fight. The soldiers bound him, and took his tomes. Esther was shoved into the upper floor and the door blocked behind her. From the window, she saw them take her father to a wagon. She also saw the captain putting her wooden home to the torch. None could defy him or his nation and go unpunished. He would keep his promise - he would not kill Cedric’s family. The fire, however, made no such promise. The dark mage would be broken.
  104.
  105. Esther was searching the home in a panic - she had to get her mother, who was still downstairs. She found no way downstairs besides the barred door. Until she found her father’s study, and the tome of dark magic on top of it. She cast her first spell that wasn’t simply for practice, and the wooden door and the furniture that blocked it was reduced to splinters. She came down into an inferno and a building coming down, looking for her mother - and found her already dead, crushed by debris. No time for grief however - she dark magic’d her way through the back wall, escaping just as the building came down.
  106.
  107. Esther was on the streets for a while, seething with rage and starving as the taxes mounted and food became so valuable it was worth as much as gold. That same year, she was there at a resistance attack - it was night, and they attacked a Mordo barracks that she was sleeping outside of. She heard shouts, and an explosion, and saw men and women stained with blood jumping onto a carriage. This was before organized resistance was well known - but they’d attacked Mordo soldiers, so she was on board. In the literal sense, as she jumped on the carriage.
  108.
  109. When they got to the headquarters of the cell, Esther was questioned. After it was determined she was not a spy, she was told to leave - before she asked to join, using her strength with dark magic as a reason. And so she was inducted to the resistance.
  110.
  111. Since then, Esther has been a part of the resistance. She’s seen groups (some that she was a part of) fall, but has managed to keep her life and freedom (as much as any Izzarian has). She managed to help save one of these groups, in fact - they were on death row, to be executed for treason, and she participated in the breakout. As the resistance members fled, she stopped - there was a beautiful woman, a foreigner it looked like, locked in the cells. She was not a resistance member, but being here meant she’d been stepped on by Mordo - and that was a good enough reason to let her out. Esther hadn’t realized that the woman, Sharne, would swear a blood debt to her and the others who had aided her escape, but wouldn’t refuse the help if she insisted on remaining - from the sounds of it, she’d take it as a grave insult if she were not able to repay her debt.
  112.
  113. Esther, personally, hardly fits the image of a resistance member. She’s more than a bit of a flirt - although men have never been on her list of targets. She’ll try to keep it professional during an operation, but the gloves are off in between. She’s not the greatest at understanding where or when her opinion is unwanted, a point she is aware of and makes efforts to fix. She has a seething hatred of Mordo’s officers and leaders, but she bears no ill-will to it’s citizens (or those of other nations who stand by and watch) by default - they are not their leaders, and to be entirely fair they are likely told that Izarra deserves it and not given the whole truth.
