The way the concept of direct variation is used in everyday life is able to be comparable to the following example which is the more hours you work, the higher your paycheck will be once your time is due. Also another example of direct variation would be the more you drive, the more gas you consume.  These are a few examples of how direct variation is used in everyday life.

The way the concept of inverse variation is used in everyday life is compared to how as you accumulate more work or kids you will have the tendency  to  have fewer free time for yourself.
