Software and data are human phenomena (on Earth, at least), but I call them natural phenomena? Consider Carl Sagan's provocative argument: > We are a way for the cosmos to know itself. Sagan implies that humans aren't just inseparable from nature; we *are* nature. I agree with him. The distinction between natural and artificial is, for lack of a better term, artificial. It may be a useful distinction is some contexts, but I think it's simpler and more interesting to put technology (like software and data) on a level playing field with everything else. Hence, software and data are nature's most interesting systems.
