  4. During one of the years when I was in the school orchestra, our school had to host an event known as APAC Orchestra. It was where the individual orchestras of each APAC school (namely the international schools from China plus several others from Korea) had to come together and perform to an audience under the guidance of a professional conductor. That year, it was none other than Dr. Sandra Dackow, the current conductor of the Hershey Symphony Orchestra. To me, a beginner cellist, the event presented itself as a huge challenge: not only did I have to practice songs meant to be performed by professional orchestras, but I had to also work with forty other cellists to perform said pieces. Our school orchestra had consisted only of four cellists, so it was quite overwhelming just to imagine the magnitude of such large numbers. Despite my reluctance to participate due to the difficulties, the event was mandatory for a grade and thus I became a part of the APAC Orchestra of 2009. In order not to make a fool of myself and score a bad grade, I forced myself to practice at least two hours a day, far more that what I was used to. There was no end to my self-complaining, groaning and whining, but I could do nothing about it. My preparation lasted roughly for a month, and then it was time for the event itself. When I was finally grouped and practicing with all the other cellists, I felt unconsciously that they too, had undergone the same trials as I did. After the event was over, we had a chance to hear a recording of our performance. It was nothing spectacular, but the efforts of everyone could be heard. Was the event worth our time? Yes.
