--For issues with reiserfs--
In stead of running the command
mkfs.reiserfs /dev/sda3
run the command
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda3
then in stead of
mount -t reiserfs /dev/sda3 /mnt/gentoo
run
mount -t ext4 /dev/sda3 /mnt/gentoo
