Timeline:
* 2011/6:
Netafp.com withholds source with a snotty open letter to try and force
consumer NAS device manufacturers into paying them for support contracts.
* 2011/6:
They announce they have updates to the 2.2-beta4 release which fixes time
machine support for OSX 10.7
* 2011/7/20:
I respond to their open letter. Via pastebin + twitter and through the
contact form on the netafp.com website.
http://pastebin.com/jzXWdCzJ
* 2011/7/20:
I receive a response from Ralph Böhme <rb@netafp.com> saying, in part, that
the issue should be sorted out within weeks/months.
http://pastebin.com/YXjxEQT8
* 2011/7/21:
I respond asking how they will let me pay for a support contract so that I
may have working backups. (No response received.)
http://pastebin.com/YXjxEQT8
* 2011/7/21:
I find that netgear released binaries for their "closed" version
of this GPL product on 2011/7/20
* 2011/7/21:
I download netgear's distribution which had no additional click-through
licensing.
* 2011/7/21:
I respond to my inquiry regarding a support contract with a demand for the
GPL'ed source. Netgear, netafp.com contact,
netatalk-dev@lists.sourceforge.net, and gpl-violations@gnu.org are in the email
envelope.
http://pastebin.com/YXjxEQT8
* 2011/7/21:
I submitted a story to slashdot with links to the original open letter and
pastebins of my email correspondence along with links to the netatalk-dev
mailling list archive posts.
* 2011/7/21:
I receive a response to my demand from Frank Lahm <fl@netafp.com> with a
copy of the netatalk-2-2-0-p6.tar.gz which contains the source in question.
Off-list and with no other recipients of the email.
http://pastebin.com/MiWBbp7q
* 2011/7/21:
I posted the received source to github and responded with all original
recipients in the email envelope with a link to the posting on github.
http://pastebin.com/MiWBbp7q
* 2011/7/21:
I receive a request to remove Ralph Böhme <rb@netafp.com> from all public
postings to prevent him from having issues with his current employer who
apparently has terms against him contributing to open source projects or
receiving payment from other agencies. (Which is the case is unclear.)
http://pastebin.com/9QAmJL3L
* 2011/7/21:
I respond that I cannot remove his name from the pastebin postings as they
were posted as anonymously not with a logged in account.
http://pastebin.com/9QAmJL3L
* 2011/7/21:
Frank responds pointing out that his name was in the github commit.
http://pastebin.com/9QAmJL3L
* 2011/7/22:
I acknowledge that I accidentally pasted the wrong contact as the provider
of the source, fix the commit message, and do a forced update on the repo
removing his name.
http://pastebin.com/9QAmJL3L
* 2011/7/22:
I submitted a new story to slashdot with the updated information using
links to the mailling list archive where the github repo was posted.
* 2011/7/22:
I awake this morning to find that they have taken their site down for
"maintenence" and someone has removed the github link post from the
netatalk-dev mailling list archives making all links in both slashdot
stories inaccessible
http://pastebin.com/gTMt315b
* 2011/7/22:
I ask Frank why he has censored the mailling list archives.
http://pastebin.com/gTMt315b
* 2011/7/22:
He claims no knowledge.
http://pastebin.com/gTMt315b
* 2011/7/22:
I point out that someone has removed it.
http://pastebin.com/gTMt315b
* 2011/7/22:
He claims that only the sourceforge admins have access to manipulate the
archives.
http://pastebin.com/gTMt315b
* 2011/7/22:
I composed this timeline and uploaded the missing pieces to pastebin to
prevent further censorship.
