You're going to need to make an account on Challonge so we can add you as a participant. From there, you can report match results and upload replay demos and stuff.

How is it decided which player plays on which side?

Whatever you want.

Are any characters banned?

Whatever you two agree on.

May I change characters in between rounds, if there are multiple (i.e. best of three)?

Sure, if you two are okay with it.

Will pausing the game lead to a default loss?

If your opponent is fine with it, then you can pause as much as you'd like.

May I return to character select, if I picked a wrong one, like right at the beginning of the round? (maybe 5s in or something)

If your opponent is fine with it, then you can restart the match to your heart's content.
