  730.                 <p class="MsoNormal">By the late 1970s Lionel was
  731.                 regaining its place as America's leading train maker.&nbsp; Under the
  732.                 leadership of Model Products Corporation (MPC) since 1970, Lionel had
  733.                 steadily rebuilt the toy train market and had become increasingly aware
  734.                 of the importance of collectors to its business.&nbsp; In 1974, with the
  735.                 introduction of the Bicentennial train set, Lionel began the production
  736.                 of 'theme' sets, top-of-the-line train sets whose pieces were sold
  737.                 individually.&nbsp; In 1979, Lionel took this a step farther and
  738.                 introduced an entire series of themed sets.</p>
  739.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  740.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Known as the Famous American
  741.                 Railroad Series (FARR for short), these sets commemorated five of the
  742.                 greatest railroads in American history--The Atchison, Topeka and Santa
  743.                 Fe, the Union Pacific, the Great Northern, the Southern Railway, and the
  744.                 Pennsylvania Railroad.&nbsp; By picking such large, well-known
  745.                 railroads, Lionel covered every geographical region of the country--the
  746.                 Pennsylvania for the East and Midwest, the Southern for the South, the
  747.                 Great Northern for the Upper Midwest and Northwest, and the Santa Fe and
  748.                 Union Pacific for the Great Plains and the West Coast.</p>
  749.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  750.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Each set included a top of the line steam
  751.                 engine and six cars.&nbsp; Five of the cars were included in the
  752.                 original release, with the sixth usually following a few months or a year later.&nbsp;
  753.                 Lionel also made a specific car to commemorate the series itself.&nbsp;
  754.                 In the first four sets, the original five cars were always a boxcar,
  755.                 refrigerator car, hopper, tank car, and a bay window caboose. In the
  756.                 final set, a double-door boxcar replaced the refrigerator car, and a
  757.                 porthole caboose took the place of the bay window model.</p>

  761.                 Each piece in the FARR series has a special diamond logo on the each
  762.                 side, with the number of the set in the series in the middle.</p>

  764.                 <p class="MsoNormal">All of the locomotives were die-cast
  765.                 metal, with Lionel's electronic sound of steam feature and a smoke unit.&nbsp;
  766.                 All of the the engines except the one included in the first FARR also
  767.                 featured an electronic whistle.</p>
  768.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  769.                 <p class="MsoNormal">The cars were all typical for Lionel
  770.                 at the time, with operating couplers.&nbsp; The cars on the first three
  771.                 sets have plastic trucks, while the cars on the final two sets featured
  772.                 Lionel's die-cast sprung trucks.&nbsp; The cabooses for all of the sets
  773.                 were lighted.</p>

  775.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Like nearly every other set where
  776.                 the items were sold separately, there are more FARR cars than there are
  777.                 matching engines.</p>
  778.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  779.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Popular and well-received, an FARR
  780.                 set was in the Lionel catalog six out of seven years from 1979 to 1985
  781.                 (No FARR set was catalogued in 1982).&nbsp;
  782.                 They were always at or near the top of the Lionel line, and made a
  783.                 lasting impact on Lionel's business.</p>

  845.                 first of the FARR sets and set the formula for the FARR sets which would
  846.                 last throughout their run.&nbsp;&nbsp; Lionel used the 4-6-4 Hudson to
  847.                 head up the set, an engine type which had been a regular part of
  848.                 Lionel's catalog throughout the 1970s.&nbsp; The engine, #8900, would be
  849.                 the only 6-drivered steam engine in the FARR series.&nbsp; </p>

  851.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Five cars were initially catalogued:&nbsp;

  916.                 joined the FARR series. This set was notable because it marked the
  917.                 return of the 2-8-4 Berkshire to the Lionel line.&nbsp; This popular
  918.                 engine, a mainstay of the Lionel line throughout the Postwar years, had
  919.                 last been catalogued in 1968. Its return proved to Lionel fans that the
  920.                 company was truly back.&nbsp; </p>
  921.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  922.                 <p class="MsoNormal">The engine, 8002, was painted a
  923.                 sharp two-tone gray with yellow striping and lettering.&nbsp; However,
  924.                 the paint has an unusual defect that shows over time. The gray paint
  925.                 used on the boiler is very sensitive to heat, and if the locomotive is
  926.                 stored in a hot area for a long period the paint will take on a
  927.                 yellowish tint. The smoke deflectors were painted the same color but
  928.                 will not tint if exposed to heat, so comparing the color of the
  929.                 deflectors to the boiler is a quick way to tell if the engine has this
  930.                 problem.&nbsp; Engines with intact paint are worth a fair amount more
  931.                 than those that have yellowed.</p>
  932.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  933.                 <p class="MsoNormal">The cars followed the same pattern
  934.                 as the Santa Fe set, with five cars in the initial offering and a sixth
  935.                 added later that year. The first five cars were a boxcar (9419),
  936.                 refrigerator car (9811), covered hopper (9366), tank car (9367), and a
  937.                 bay window caboose (9368).&nbsp; The sixth car was the 9383 flatcar with
  938.                 trailers.</p>
  939.                 <p class="MsoNormal">The UP decals on the on tank car
  940.                 tends to peel over time.&nbsp; Even mint in the box examples of this car
  941.                 have this problem, the result of Lionel using too weak of an adhesive.&nbsp;
  942.                 A small dab of glue fixes the problem.</p>

  1073.                 1982, but it returned the following year when the Southern set was
  1074.                 introduced.&nbsp; Lionel once again used a hybrid Berkshire to head up
  1075.                 the set, this time replacing the four-wheel rear truck on the engine
  1076.                 with a two-wheel model, creating the first 2-8-2 in Lionel history.&nbsp;
  1077.                 The engine's catalog number was 8309, but the engine itself was marked
  1078.                 4501, in honor of an actual Southern 2-8-2 used in excursion service.
  1079.                 The real Southern 4501 still exists and can be seen at the Tennessee
  1080.                 Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, and the tender of the Lionel
  1081.                 model has the initials 'TVRM' on the top flank just under the coal pile.&nbsp;
  1082.                 The set also featured the only die-cast tender in the FARR series.</p>

  1085.                 #4 included a boxcar (9451), refrigerator car (9887), hopper (6104),

  1090.                 production version of the Southern FARR set differed significantly from
  1091.                 the catalog illustrations.&nbsp; In the catalog, the engine was painted
  1092.                 very dark green (almost black), with sans-serif lettering. However, the
  1093.                 engine when produced was painted the lighter green used on the Southern
  1094.                 and and had serif lettering, like the actual 4501.&nbsp; Also, the
  1095.                 caboose in the catalog was dark green with a gold lettering, matching
  1096.                 the engine, but the caboose was produced in red with white lettering,
  1097.                 like actual Southern cabooses.&nbsp; The hopper was also the first
  1098.                 Lionel hopper to include a plastic coal load.</p>

  1101.                 had the shortest production run of the five sets.&nbsp; In 1983 Lionel

  1104.                 Catalogued in 1983, the set was actually not released until the

  1165.                 was written in 1984, when Lionel introduced the fifth and final set, in
  1166.                 honor of the Pennsylvania Railroad.&nbsp; For this set, Lionel brought
  1167.                 back the the 6-8-6 turbine, last seen in 1955. The original turbine was
  1168.                 a one-of-a-kind engine built in 1944 as the Pennsy's answer to diesel
  1169.                 power.&nbsp; While the actual engine was a flop, Lionel's model was a
  1170.                 success, becoming a staple of the early Postwar era.</p>
  1171.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  1172.                 <p class="MsoNormal">The FARR turbine, 8404, closely
  1173.                 resembled the 682 turbine of 1954-55, which was the last of the Postwar
  1174.                 engines.&nbsp; Unlike the 682, the 8404 was painted in dark green with a
  1175.                 silver smokebox and boilerfront.&nbsp; Like the 8309 Southern 2-8-2, the
  1176.                 8404 carried a prototypical number on its cab, 6200, which was the
  1177.                 number of the real Pennsylvania steam turbine.</p>

  1179.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Lionel made one minor change in the
  1180.                 cars for this final set.&nbsp; In place of a refrigerator car, Lionel
  1181.                 included a double door boxcar (9456) in the original five-car set.&nbsp;
  1182.                 The other four cars were a regular boxcar (9476), hopper (6123), tank
  1183.                 car (6307), and a porthole caboose (6308).&nbsp; Set #5 is also the only
  1184.                 one that did not include a bay window caboose--Lionel went with the N5C
  1185.                 porthole model, which was based on an actual Pennsylvania prototype.</p>

  1188.                 1989, by which time Lionel's ownership had changed and a new numbering

  1209.                 <p class="MsoNormal">From the beginning, many Lionel
  1210.                 collectors knew that there would only be five sets in the FARR series.&nbsp;
  1211.                 How?&nbsp; Because in 1979 Lionel made a car that told them so.</p>
  1212.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  1213.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Uncatalogued, the 9418 commemorated
  1214.                 the introduction of the FARR sets and included the five logos of the
  1215.                 railroads that would make up the series. This car is a standard Lionel
  1216.                 boxcar with sliding doors and operating couplers.&nbsp; </p>
  1217.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  1218.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Rarity and Value</p>
  1219.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  1220.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Always in the regular catalog and
  1221.                 well-marketed, none of the Famous American Railroad sets are considered
  1222.                 rare. Their value stems from their features and quality construction,
  1223.                 not scarcity.&nbsp;&nbsp; However, there were some fluctuations in
  1224.                 production quantities. </p>
  1225.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  1226.                 <p class="MsoNormal">So how many were made?&nbsp;
  1227.                 According to the Greenberg's Guide to Lionel Trains, 1970-91, about
  1228.                 6,000 of the #8002 Union Pacific locomotives were produced.&nbsp; At
  1229.                 Trainz, we have sold enough FARR sets--well over a hundred--to get an
  1230.                 idea of the production numbers based on the ratio of each of the sets
  1231.                 relative to the number of Union Pacific sets we have seen.&nbsp; The
  1232.                 ratio (not the exact figure, but the ratio) of the locomotives we have
  1233.                 sold at Trainz breaks down as follows:</p>
  1234.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  1235.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Santa Fe:&nbsp; 5.5</p>
  1236.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Union Pacific:&nbsp; 9</p>
  1237.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Great Northern: 6</p>
  1238.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Southern:&nbsp; 5</p>
  1239.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Pennsylvania:&nbsp; 8 </p>
  1240.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  1241.                 <p class="MsoNormal">We use the locomotive figure as it
  1242.                 is known that fewer engines than cars were made, and to have the
  1243.                 complete set, you obviously would need the engine.&nbsp; Therefore--<i>and
  1244.                 this is purely conjecture--</i>based upon the number of UP engines
  1245.                 believed produced, and the relative numbers we have seen at Trainz, the
  1246.                 number of complete sets produced is likely to be around these figures:</p>
  1247.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  1248.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Santa Fe:&nbsp; 3,500</p>
  1249.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Union Pacific:&nbsp; 6,000</p>
  1250.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Great Northern:&nbsp; 4,000</p>
  1251.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Southern:&nbsp; 3,300</p>
  1252.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Pennsylvania:&nbsp; 5,000</p>
  1253.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  1254.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Of the individual cars, the 9418
  1255.                 FARR boxcar and the 7304 Southern Stock car are the hardest cars to
  1256.                 locate, followed by the other four add-on cars.&nbsp; The Pennsylvania
  1257.                 cars are worth a bit more than the other regular production FARR cars
  1258.                 due to the high popularity of the Pennsylvania Railroad with collectors,
  1259.                 but none of the cars are considered rare, and many are quite common.</p>

  1262.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Conclusion</p>

  1265.                 <p class="MsoNormal">Lionel finished the Famous American
  1266.                 Railroad Series in 1985, and the following year Lionel was sold to
  1267.                 Detroit real estate developer and longtime Lionel collector Richard
  1268.                 Kughn, and Lionel became Lionel Trains, Inc. In 1986, the FARR series
  1269.                 was succeeded by the Fallen Flags series, which would eventually number
  1270.                 seven sets and would be catalogued until 1993.&nbsp; </p>
  1271.                 <p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
  1272.                 <p class="MsoNormal">The FARR series proved to Lionel
  1273.                 that there was a demand for a series of high-quality, expensive sets.&nbsp;
  1274.                 While in recent years Lionel has reverted to selling complete sets in
  1275.                 one package instead of individually, the format first used in these sets
  1276.                 is still occasionally seen today in the Lionel catalog.&nbsp; The the
  1277.                 era of Railsounds and Legacy Command Control has made the FARR sets more
  1278.                 nostalgic than cutting-edge, but the importance of the FARR sets in
  1279.                 Lionel's history remains profound, and they are still standouts in any
  1280.                 collection.</p>
