- Hello, good people!
- Another LAN has passed, and so we are duty-bound to bring you information
- regarding The Future! The final section is HUGE but very important if you wish
- to run in or vote on the elections for the next committee.
- TL;DR:
- 1. LAN Feedback thread
- 2. Paintballing & LL signup deadlines
- 3. Union SHAGFEST Results
- 4. COGS AGM incoming - run the society!
- With COGS LAN 5 of this year over, the usual feedback thread is awaiting your
- comments at http://tiny.cc/cl5feedback
- ---
- Paintballing is soon! At the moment we don't have a huge number of people, so do
- invite your friends for a bigger battle. We tried to collect money from people
- at the last LAN but only a few had any - however, we do need to have it this
- weekend. Please PM a committee member to see them about paying, or to BACS the
- money to Robbo.
- ---
- The deadline for LeachLAN signups is less than a week away - if you want to come
- on a fantastic weekend holiday with COGS, get over to
- http://www.cogsbristol.co.uk/signup
- And sign up to LeachLAN before this Saturday. (the 13th) At this point we will
- be sending numbers to SWLANs, confirming our discount and organising transport.
- Please also note: please also update your sign up if you change your mind on
- how likely you are to come - we will only be able to get a discount for people
- signed up as "definitely."
- ---
- Last Thursday was the Union AGM^WSHAGFEST, as renamed during the proceedings.
- We just managed to get through the important motions for COGS - the name of the
- society remains the same, and the Union will lobby the University to provide
- societies with extra space should they need it. This (along with the SHAGFEST)
- result makes a good outcome for us!
- ---
- And now, a very important announcement. Next LAN, on the 13th of March, will be
- our own AGM. So here follow instructions for how to do all kinds of AGM related
- things.
- First of all, the AGM offers a chance to change bits of the COGS constitution.
- This means you can add new positions, remove old ones and generally change how
- the society is run. If you want to change the constitution, please tell us what
- you want to change a week before the AGM. You can include, but don't have to,
- precise new wording of the constitution. This ensures the change does exactly
- what you want, but may end up with the meeting discussing boring points of
- wording for hours - so if you trust the new committee to come up with the words,
- you can state only the effect of the change and leave it up to them. In either
- case, you should be prepared to say something in order to explain why your
- change should happen.
- The other and generally bigger bit of the AGM are the elections. If you wish
- to run for election you ought to nominate yourself at least a week beforehand.
- We also encourage you to write a short manifesto, and submit it to the current
- committee who will make it available to view via the !mani bot command on IRC.
- You may also wish to make a forum thread if you have a longer manifesto (such
- threads should go in the Serious Business subforum)
- Further nominations may be made on the day of the LAN if a position is
- uncontested (i.e. has 0 or 1 people running for it). If you're running for a
- position, you should think of enough to say to give a short speech on the day.
- The positions you can run for (at least before anyone goes changing the
- constitution):
- President - responsible for organizing everyone else, being official to the
- Union etc.
- Vice President - president's memory and general doer of things that need doing.
- Secretary - writes emails to anyone who needs emails writing to them,
- communicates with other organisations such as the Union, takes minutes at
- meetings
- Treasurer - responsible for the money, often is tasked with buying things.
- Webmaster - responsible for web/IRC services.
- Sysadmin - responsible for webserver/gameserver, network hardware.
- Ents Rep - organises the socials (not a full committee position)
- If you're thinking about any positions but haven't decided, do talk to any of
- the current (or past) committee to find out more. There will be a handover
- period during which the current committee will help the new one get the hang of
- things.
