  1. Hello, good people!
  2.
  3. Another LAN has passed, and so we are duty-bound to bring you information
  4. regarding The Future! The final section is HUGE but very important if you wish
  5. to run in or vote on the elections for the next committee.
  6.
  7. TL;DR:
  8. 1. LAN Feedback thread
  9. 2. Paintballing & LL signup deadlines
  10. 3. Union SHAGFEST Results
  11. 4. COGS AGM incoming - run the society!
  12.
  13. With COGS LAN 5 of this year over, the usual feedback thread is awaiting your
  14. comments at http://tiny.cc/cl5feedback
  15.
  16. ---
  17.
  18. Paintballing is soon! At the moment we don't have a huge number of people, so do
  19. invite your friends for a bigger battle. We tried to collect money from people
  20. at the last LAN but only a few had any - however, we do need to have it this
  21. weekend. Please PM a committee member to see them about paying, or to BACS the
  22. money to Robbo.
  23.
  24. ---
  25.
  26. The deadline for LeachLAN signups is less than a week away - if you want to come
  27. on a fantastic weekend holiday with COGS, get over to
  28.
  29. http://www.cogsbristol.co.uk/signup
  30.
  31. And sign up to LeachLAN before this Saturday. (the 13th) At this point we will
  32. be sending numbers to SWLANs, confirming our discount and organising transport.
  33. Please also note: please also update your sign up if you change your mind on
  34. how likely you are to come - we will only be able to get a discount for people
  35. signed up as "definitely."
  36.
  37. ---
  38.
  39. Last Thursday was the Union AGM^WSHAGFEST, as renamed during the proceedings.
  40. We just managed to get through the important motions for COGS - the name of the
  41. society remains the same, and the Union will lobby the University to provide
  42. societies with extra space should they need it. This (along with the SHAGFEST)
  43. result makes a good outcome for us!
  44.
  45. ---
  46.
  47. And now, a very important announcement. Next LAN, on the 13th of March, will be
  48. our own AGM. So here follow instructions for how to do all kinds of AGM related
  49. things.
  50. First of all, the AGM offers a chance to change bits of the COGS constitution.
  51. This means you can add new positions, remove old ones and generally change how
  52. the society is run. If you want to change the constitution, please tell us what
  53. you want to change a week before the AGM. You can include, but don't have to,
  54. precise new wording of the constitution. This ensures the change does exactly
  55. what you want, but may end up with the meeting discussing boring points of
  56. wording for hours - so if you trust the new committee to come up with the words,
  57. you can state only the effect of the change and leave it up to them. In either
  58. case, you should be prepared to say something in order to explain why your
  59. change should happen.
  60.
  61. The other and generally bigger bit of the AGM are the elections. If you wish
  62. to run for election you ought to nominate yourself at least a week beforehand.
  63. We also encourage you to write a short manifesto, and submit it to the current
  64. committee who will make it available to view via the !mani bot command on IRC.
  65. You may also wish to make a forum thread if you have a longer manifesto (such
  66. threads should go in the Serious Business subforum)
  67. Further nominations may be made on the day of the LAN if a position is
  68. uncontested (i.e. has 0 or 1 people running for it). If you're running for a
  69. position, you should think of enough to say to give a short speech on the day.
  70.
  71. The positions you can run for (at least before anyone goes changing the
  72. constitution):
  73.
  74. President - responsible for organizing everyone else, being official to the
  75.         Union etc.
  76. Vice President - president's memory and general doer of things that need doing.
  77. Secretary - writes emails to anyone who needs emails writing to them,
  78.         communicates with other organisations such as the Union, takes minutes at
  79.         meetings
  80. Treasurer - responsible for the money, often is tasked with buying things.
  81. Webmaster - responsible for web/IRC services.
  82. Sysadmin - responsible for webserver/gameserver, network hardware.
  83. Ents Rep - organises the socials (not a full committee position)
  84.
  85. If you're thinking about any positions but haven't decided, do talk to any of
  86. the current (or past) committee to find out more. There will be a handover
  87. period during which the current committee will help the new one get the hang of
  88. things.
