  1. The #ITU Has Gone Too Far - It Is Time To Act to Protect the Internet
  2.
  3. On Feb 5, 2013 there will be a U.S. Congress Joint Hearing on international efforts to regulate Internet.
  4. This will be done in the House of Representatives.
  5.
  6. Our job is simple, to write our Representatives and tell them that we are opposed to international efforts to 'govern' or otherwise regulate the internet, that we support the multistakeholder model ~ and you may want to add, that the U.S. government should consider getting rid of the U.S. Federal tax withholding exemption for the UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU) which is a result of an Presidential Executive order that was put in place and unchanged since 1947(!)
  7. Congress should also reduce the 11 million tax dollars we give to it yearly or redirect that money to mulistakeholder institutions that are in the real business of handling our internet in an open and inclusive manner. (An example of a true multistakeholder organization that handles internet issues is IETF, you can see their page, which is supported by Internet Society, at https://www.ietf.org/rfc.html - there are many other such organizations, see http://www.internetsociety.org/internet/who-makes-it-work for some examples of true multistakeholder organizations that deserve our support.)
  8.
  9. Write Your Representative! Do this now! You can do it using the following tool:

  12.
  13. If you are at a loss as to what to write your Representative on this issue, remember to mention the upcoming Feb. 5 2013 Joint Hearing on international efforts to regulate the internet in your message, express support for a multistakeholder system to help build and develop our internet, and state your opposition to the ITU's continued approach for a state-centered, governmental "hoarding" approach to net governance. (The ITU / International Telecommunication Union is currently trying to redefine what "multistakeholder" and "governance" means to allow governments so that the ITU can implement its deep packet inspection protocols, the ITU wants to have a "double vote" at internet governance meetings (even though the governments that are ITU member states already have votes and / or strongly influence most internet proceedings), and ultimately wants take over internet governance affairs. We should oppose every effort of the ITU to intrude further into the business of the internet.

  16.
  17. This is happening in light of the already existing (passed unanimously by the U.S. House and Senate)
  18. S.Con.Res. 50 of 2012 which stated, the "2012 World Conference on International Telecommunications that would fundamentally alter the governance and operation of the Internet" and that it is the "policy of the United States to promote a global Internet free from government control." While we know the United States and in fact the world realistically has a long way to go to achieve that goal, this effort and legislative action was designed specifically as "a concurrent resolution expressing the sense of Congress regarding actions to preserve and advance the multistakeholder governance model under which the Internet has thrived."
