- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
- FAQ by Cosmo
- ---What is the World Record?---
- You can find the best times here:
- Note that the Japanese version is quite different from the USA/PAL versions.
- ---What is different in the Japanese version of Wind Waker?---
- The text is much faster. This saves time in a speedrun.
- Some rupee, treasure chart, and heart piece locations are changed. The golden ship doesn't drop a Triforce chart, but a normal treasure chart instead. You have to go through a chain of treasure charts to get that Triforce chart. This costs time in a speedrun.
- Cabana Deed skip is harder on the JP version due to the way aiming inside of a wall works.
- Due to these differences, it is very hard to compare times between the Japanese and USA/PAL versions of the game. I currently play on the USA version.
- ---Why is this so called 'speedrun' 6 hours long?---
- Wind Waker is one of the longest console Zelda games released. 6 hours is actually very fast for this game!
- ---What is a Tingle Tuner and why does it save time?---
- The Tingle Tuner is an in-game item that Tingle gives you. If you have a GBA connected you can buy healing item called Red Ting, magic, protection from enemies, or a 5 second "hover boots" ability called a Tingle Balloon. Tingle Balloons and Red Ting are useful for performing sequence breaks such as boss key skips and zombie hovering.
- ---What is Zombie Hovering?---
- If you get knocked over and die, when Link stands back up you have a fraction of a second to input a grounded jumpslash (L+A), which will make Link go upwards a small amount. Once in the air, if you do mid-air jumpslashes (B) repeatedly as fast as possible, you can gain height. This lets you fly and skip certain things.
- ---What are you doing with the Sail?---
- It is called sail pumping, and it is a decent amount faster than sailing normally. If you pull the sail you get an initial boost of speed. I simply press A to put the sail away, then Z to pull it out again, and repeat. This gives me the boost of speed over and over. It also helps me when I am sailing at weird directions such as 90 degrees off from the wind direction.
- ---Why do you need so many Rupees?---
- It costs 3184 rupees to decipher all 8 Triforce charts, which is required to complete the game.
- ---How do you keep drinking the Soup without losing it?---
- This is called the Soup Glitch. By pressing Soup and Start immediately afterwards, I am able to switch out the Soup for another item. After I unpause, Link drinks the Soup but it doesn't waste it, so I can use it again.
- ---What is the Cabana Deed skip and why do you obtain Forest Water?---
- There is an island where you must enter a Cabana. To gain access you must have the Cabana Deed, which requires 21 Joy Pendants and also playing a minigame on Windfall Island.
- However, if I pull out the Wind Waker on the same frame that the Forest Water expires, I can open a chest while the King of Red Lion's text is on the screen, which lets me walk around during the treasure chest cutscene. While in this cutscene I can phase partially into walls, enough to shoot the Hookshot through the wall. If I place a bomb down and time it perfectly, I can get knocked off the Hookshot into the Cabana without having to open the door. This saves about 4 minutes.
- ---Whats the difference between New Game (tunic) and New Game + (pajamas)?---
- NG+ has preset Triforce shard locations, based on your first file. So this could be manipulated to actually be faster. It also has longer text (the translated Hylian is longer). You start with the color pictograph but it is of no importance. Due do the weirdness and possible exploitation of the shard locations I've decided to do all my runs on a fresh New Game file.
