  1. The Frog and the Cat, by gtAngel
  2.
  3.
  4. In the forest there were many animals. There were squirrels, there were snakes, there were gorillas, and there was a single lonely frog named Osur. Not one single animal in the forest liked Osur, which was fine with him as he didn't like any of them either. (Although he was rumored to have had a crush on one of the gorillas in the past.) Things were peaceful in the forest for many years, but one day a visitor came to the forest. The visitor, a wonderfully fluffy cat named Mew, was the subject of much discussion and rumor. Many were convinced that she was an evil invader here to stop them from enjoying themselves, while others considered her a bastion of sanctity and order.
  5.
  6. There was much debate between all of the animals, save one. The lowly Osur, alone in his hole, was experiencing feelings he had never felt before. His heart thudded within his chest, his stomach filled with anxiety, and whenever he saw Mew his thoughts and words became even less coherent than before. Unsure of what to do, he bottled his feelings deep within himself and hid even deeper within his isolated hole.
  7.
  8. This could not go on for long, however, as Osur simply grew more and more restless with every passing day. His screeches echoed throughout the forest, and eventually they became too much for the others to ignore. Eventually a council was called, and they decided that one of them must talk to Osur and figure out how to stop his screeches. As he was the least popular animal in the council, the hedgehog named Haruhi was chosen as their ambassador. Steeling himself for the coming encounter, Haruhi slowly traveled to Osur's hideaway.

  12. With some trepidation, Haruhi called out. After several moments Osur, covered in slime and refuse, crawled up, and scowled at his gu3st. "What do you want?" he snarled.
  13.
  14. Haruhi stepped back, and then hesitantly spoke. "You've been screeching every night and it's been bothering everyone else."
  15.
  16. Osur snapped back, "I don't care." The two of them stood there without saying anything for a moment, but then, suddenly, Osur broke down into tears. "It's all because of Mew that I'm like this! I want to talk to her, I want to touch her, but I know she would only hate me!" This surprised Haruhi greatly. He had never known Osur could feel such sadness, and in that moment he felt great pity for the lowly frog.
  17.
  18. In a moment of determination, Haruhi decided. "I'll get Mew to talk to you. You can rely on me." With confidence and Osur's thanks with him, Haruhi traveled to Mew's cottage.

  22. Mew's cottage stood out from the nearby foliage, but at the same time still felt like part of the forest. It was a strange thing, this house. Haruhi had never seen anything like it before, but apparently where Mew came from these sorts of dwellings were common. Supposedly humans inhabited them, although Haruhi didn't particularly believe those stories. Humans were too destructive to have a home as nice as this.
  23.
  24. Haruhi knocked on the door, but was instead greeted by a warm "meow" coming from a nearby hammock. Mew was lounging in her hammock, carefully placed to sit within the beams of light flitting through the trees.
  25.
  26. Haruhi knew what he was about to ask would be hard, but he was resolved to see this through. "Mew," he began, "the reason Osur has been screeching every night is because he wants to meet you. If you could just go and-"
  27.
  28. "Nope."
  29.
  30. "Mew, he just wants to talk for a moment. It really wouldn't-"
  31.
  32. "Nope. Goodbye." Mew spoke firmly, and then made a show of laying back down on her hammock and falling asleep. Haruhi was devastated - he had made a promise to Osur, but now he found himself unable to complete the promise. Haruhi tried to prod and talk to Mew, to rouse her from sleep and convince her to change her mind, but nothing worked.
  33.
  34. Hours passed as Haruhi tried everything he could think of, and then eventually began to lose hope. He was about to shamefully return to Osur, when he was struck by an idea. If he couldn't bring Mew to Osur, maybe he could do something else to cure Osur's loneliness. They were shameful thoughts, but Haruhi was spurred to action and began his scheme.
