Rules for downloading from websites

Or via web spiders like wget.

  1. Don't be a bandwidth hog. Limit bandwidth usage to around 50kbps or less. Or you'll get booted and your IP might get banned. If the hosting computer kills your download process, see #3 below and increase your speed limit.
  2. Wait 30 minutes between file downloads. Most packages have this option. Because some servers, like Wikipedia, have automatic software to boot people who use too much bandwidth or make too many requests for files.
  3. Some unix computers hosting the files will kill your download process if it takes too long, so you might want to use a higher speed limit like 150kbps. This limit is hard-coded into the kernal and the sysadmin can do nothing to change it unless they recompile the kernal, which is not for beginners at all. Some will kill your download after an hour, or 24 hours.

FREE Software to download web pages or sites

  1. Winhttrack. My favorite I've used for 5+ years. This has Windows and command line versions of the util. Also for Linux and Android. http://www.httrack.com/page/2/
  2. GNU wget. Command line version only for Windows cmd.exe. http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/wget.htm. DDG search for wget. There might be more than one version for Windows.
  3. Wget2 will make simultaneous downloads. Not sure if this is done yet. https://github.com/rockdaboot/wget2
  4. Uget. Use this Windows app to download multiple large files. I don't know if it will support directories and get all files in the dir and its subdirs. https://ugetdm.com/screenshots/. Free, with queues. Also at Sourceforge.
