  1. Start
  2.
  3. Hey guys, I’m Dang and we are Team 318. Today we’ll be taking a look our project. To begin, I will be giving a brief introduction and goal of our project. Next, we have Peter to explain our design. Steven and Alvin will be giving details about how our design works and its current progress.

  5. Background
  6.
  7. In Canada, there are many Canadians that have trouble with simple tasks. For example, they could have trouble going to the grocery store to buy food or pick up prescription at a pharmacy.
  8.
  9. In fact, in 2012, 15% of the Canadian population reported to have a disability that has caused these difficulties. The most prevalent disabilities include pain and impaired flexibility or mobility. On the other hand, it can simply be just a person requiring assistance whether it’s due to illness or having a busy day.
  10.
  11. Motivation
  12.
  13. Generally people in need go and ask friends or family for help. However, some problems are that they can be too busy to help, or simply just cannot help at all. In many cases, people in need don’t want to become a burden to their friends or family and so they don’t even bother to ask them for help.
  14.
  15. It might seem strange depending on the situation to ask a random person for help but there are those out there who truly want to help people in need. These people are called volunteers (or pretty much people with free time).
  16.
  17. Currently there are few to no services dedicated for volunteers that provide an opportunity for them to help those in need of assistance. Many are simply online boards for posting classified advertisements, or listings of organization in need of full-time volunteers. But these services are just not suitable for finding people that need help with their tasks and does not facilitate a quick response.
  18.
  19. Project Goal
  20.
  21. The goal of our project is to develop a platform to connect volunteers and those in need of help. As a result, this dedicated service, will allow volunteers to find more opportunities to help those in need, and those in need will have a broader and more flexible service to rely on.
  22.
  23. Conclusion/Summary
  24.
  25. To wrap things up, our android smartphone application aims to provide a service that links volunteers to those who need help. Our android application currently has most of the core functions implemented. This includes those in need to post their request. Those who are willing to help are able to see, accept, and be notified of requests in their area. One thing to look forward to is a smarter search algorithm. For example, users near locations such as grocery stores or pharmacies are prioritized if the requests require them. The team is on track to complete the project by the end of March. By using our application, those in need will finally have a dedicated service to reply on, and volunteers will find more ways to help.
