  1. If nothing else, the Atlanta Hawks will at least look better next season. For the first time in 23 years, they have a new logo.
  2.
  3. "I like the look," said guard Steve Smith, modeling a white home uniform emblazoned with a fierce red hawk whose massive talons grip a basketball.
  4.
  5. If the white uniform is popular with players, the road set - black bleeding into deep red - is even more so. "It's definitely a great look," said Grant Long, who wore it Friday during the new look's unveiling at Six Flags.
  6.
  7. The Hawks have discarded a uniform they wore for three seasons. A solid red or white with panels, it was supplemented by an alternate black road uniform last season. Before that the Hawks last changed in 1982. But only twice since coming here in 1968 have they not worn a predominantly red uniform. They were lime green one year and medium blue for several seasons.
  8.
  9. Two other teams, Houston and Seattle, will shortly unveil their new looks, although they rank sixth and ninth respectively in merchandising among the NBA's 29 franchises.
  10.
  11. Repeat champion Houston dumps its red and yellow for a red-midnight blue-metallic silver combination with a rocket ship logo that has teeth like a shark's. Although it will not be displayed until late next week, even the suggestion of a new look has met with disfavor, a 5-1 vote against in a Houston radio station's recent poll.
  12.
  13. Last year, Cleveland changed to a bright splash of color around blue. Two years ago, Milwaukee dumped its traditional forest green for purple. Last season, the Hawks were one of five teams adapting a third uniform.
  14.
  15. The reason: merchandising. The more looks a team has the broader its appeal and the more dollars spent.
  16.
  17. Coach Lenny Wilkens said he found the look appealing. "I think it shows excitement. Despite what some people want to believe, we will bring an exciting team on the court next season. The look and the draft next week are the going to move us forward."
