  1. Adjutant Henri Michele Lamont
  2. Age: 27
  3. Nationality: French
  4.
  5. Appearance
  6. Henri generally dresses in an old French military uniform of the type worn by infantry soldiers at the end of the Great War. It has seen better days, a fact emphasized by the fact that it is usually rather rumpled. Henri also wears a military style beret. He is usually unshaven, maintaining the vague outlines of a mustache surrounded by a permanent sort-of five oclock shadow that never quite fully sprouts into a beard. Henri has black hair and brown eyes that have a haunted look to them or it may just be that theyre usually red-rimmed from lack of sleep or too much coffee, cigarettes, and wine. He smokes cigarettes constantly, and somehow always seems to have a half-finished one dangling from one corner of his mouth. In short, he constantly appears disheveled and as if he hasnt slept in days.

  8. Personality
  9. Whatever he was before the War, since then Henri has been a wreck of a man. Cynical, fatalistic, and apathetic readily describe his attitude, but hes propelled by a strange sort of inertia to keep on living and fighting. Henri has no trust in any governmental or religious institution, but still retains a great deal of pride in his French heritage though he sometimes savages the shortcomings of his own nation as badly as he does any other. Henri is a crack shot with a pistol, and carries two weapons he recovered during the War. Though his negative attitude often rubs people the wrong way and his appearance implies that he is a feckless vagabond, there remains enough of the courageous and competent soldier that he can be oddly compelling and sometimes frightening when he is roused.

  11. Background
  12. Born to a large farming family from a small village in Western France, near Normandy, Henri had a largely carefree and untroubled childhood. When the Great War broke out, initially his family was not greatly affected, except by rationing. Henris father was too old to fight, and all of the Lamont brothers were as yet too young. By late 1915, however, Henris two older brothers and three cousins had come of age and were conscripted. Henri lied about his own age and joined the army alongside them. The six of them reached the front just in time for the Battle of Verdun. Two of Henris cousins and his eldest brother died there, and the third cousin was later gassed and became an invalid before finally dying in 1920, after the end of the war. Henris other brother disappeared during the Battle of the Somme, while Henri himself was recovering in a hospital from a minor wound. During the war, Henri himself received minor wounds twice, and proved to be a courageous and skilled soldier. Despite his youth, Henri was promoted quickly, partly as a result of his proven ability and the massive casualties suffered by the army. By the end of the war he was an Adjutant, a senior non-commissioned officer with similar responsibilities to a full lieutenant. Even after the end of the Great War, though, Henris fighting days continued as he was sent to fight in the Franco-Turkish War. When that conflict finally ended, a shell-shocked Henri simply walked away with his last weeks pay, his pistols, and his uniform. For the next several years Henri wandered from Syria to the Far East, spending time in Indochina, Malaysia, and then Southern China, often in a drunken or opium induced haze. He supported himself by loaning his military skills to various unsavory men and organizations, never asking too many questions. In recent months he has grown tired of even this. (Note: Henri will have wandered to whatever region the campaign starts in since he left his last employer in Hong Kong, without any real plans or goals.)
