  2. TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT UNIT

  5. Section 1: About TE
  6.
  7. The primary duty of the Traffic Enforcement Unit is the enforcement of traffic laws in order to reduce traffic collisions, their resulting injuries, and to facilitate the safe and expedient flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. These efforts result in safer roadways and streets, fewer fatalities, injuries, and reduce property damage. The Unit concentrates its enforcement efforts in various areas within the city of Los Santos. This includes all major roads, routes, highways, and interstates within the city. The Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for setting up DUI checkpoints around the city and enforcing traffic laws as well. These units are specially trained to provide a major service to the city by enforcing all traffic regulations.

  9. Section 1: Training
  10.
  11. Training begins with an examination of every officer and their skills. They must first past this test to move further on into the training. An eighty percent or higher is deemed acceptable by the division’s standards. This test consists of Codes, Traffic violations, checkpoint setups, and many other smaller items. After an officer as pasted this test they begin phase one of defensive driving. Here they will undergo an obstacle course of cones, spike strips, blockades, and other hazards. If they pass this test they will be moved onto phase two witch consists of multiple classes on how to spot drunk drivers, traffic stops, checkpoints, and many other things. After this phase the officers will be given a final test to see what they have learned. If they pass this test they will become Traffic Enforcement Agents, and undergo a two week watch.

  13. Section 3: DUI Checkpoints
  14.
  15. Sobriety checkpoints or roadblocks involve law enforcement officials stopping every vehicle on a public roadway and investigating the possibility that the driver might be too impaired to drive. They are often set up late at night or in the very early morning hours and on weekends, at which time the proportion of impaired drivers tends to be the highest. Checkpoints are also often set near the exit points of public events, to prevent large numbers of drunk drivers from being released into traffic simultaneously from the event. With a portable and quick alcohol breath test, the police can test all drivers, and process the cars one by one as in a conveyor belt. When there is no quick test, a more complicated routine is necessary. Upon suspicion, the stopped driver is required to exit the vehicle and take a roadside sobriety test that requires the demonstration of both mental and balance skills. If the officer determines that the test has not been passed, the driver is then required to take an alcohol breath test.

  17. Section 4: Traffic Enforcement Structure
  18.
  19. The Traffic Enforcement Unit has a similar structure as any other division within the Los Santos Police Department. The head of the division starts with a Lieutenant who is responsible for overseeing all operations done by the division. Following the Lieutenant is a Sergeant who is a second in command to the division. His purpose is also to oversee operations and training of the unit. There may also be other Sergeants within the unit, but usually there is one designated second in command. Following the Sergeant is the Corporals and Officers that are responsible for all operations and conducting them under supervision of their division commander. Only the Los Santos Police Department Assistant Chief and above may override any Traffic Enforcement Division Sergeant or lieutenants decision.
  20.
  21. Section 5: Vehicles
  22. T
  23. he Traffic Enforcement Unit typically drives unmarked vehicles such as a Sultan or Buffalo. These Vehicles are faster and require more experience to drive them. Motorcycles are also often used by the division to help set up with checkpoints and random trucking stops. A push is being made to have either a San Fierro Cruiser or Las Venturas Cruiser be able to be used by the division.

  25. This is a brief explanation of what the Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Los Santos Police Department is. This was written by Sergeant James McBride and all copywriters’ have been applied. Some information came from a DUI checkpoint page of Wikipedia, as well as another page on a real Traffic Enforcement Unit.
