  125. 7:04
  126. medacris
  127. Me too! It has a good atmosphere, and I like how you can build the protag to be whoever you want him to be
  128. 7:04
  129. yama
  130. I thought from the description talking about magic that you must be crazy, but it's really magic. O_O;

  185. 7:08
  186. yama
  187. Oooh. The bait shop creeped me out a little. ^^:
  188. 7:08
  189. Mimness
  190. Can I just ask, how did you decide to balance the amount of 3D stuff with the the amount of text stuff?
  191. 7:09
  192. Cheeseness
  193. Sound design in this game is amazing
  194. 7:09
  195. medacris
  196. I need to look up the adventure game someone compared this to last week. Portal (no relation).
  197. 7:09
  198. Syd
  199. I have to say that one of my favorite aspects of Kentucky Route Zero is the ambient sounds.
  200. 7:10
  201. Cheeseness
  202. There's a reference to PPortal in this a bit later
  203. 7:10
  204. cc_jake
  205. Mimness: we try to balance different kinds of "suggestiveness" -- so like some stuff can be really suggestive if it's just-visual, and some if it's just-textual. I guess we're experimenting with what is interesting to omit
  206. 7:10
  207. medacris
  208. Mm. Again, excellent atmosphere. Sometimes the sound and description is all you need.
  209. 7:10
  210. soosoosooth [63e59364@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  211. 7:10
  212. Mimness
  213. Awesome, thanks.
  214. 7:11
  215. yama
  216. I find that the text with sound alone makes it feel like I'm there myself.
  217. 7:11
  218. Syd
  219. The excellent ambient sounds really helps your imagination fill in the rest.
  220. 7:12
  221. yama
  222. Wait, I'm not sure I got the same thing from reaching into the tanks...
  223. Been a while since I played this act, though...
  224. 7:12
  225. Cheeseness
  226. I hadn't actually been to the bait shop before encountering Shannon until my third playthrough
  227. 7:12
  228. GameClubFan_144318 [47e7a94a@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.

  233. 7:13
  234. medacris
  235. I try to do something similar when I draw-- if I'm drawing a cartoon version of someone, I try to see what I can omit and what makes someone still identifiably them
  236. 7:13
  237. Kim [62f74857@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.

  242. 7:13
  243. yama
  244. Cheeseness, wha? That's crazy.
  245. 7:14
  246. GameClubFan_759999 [5d0651fd@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  247. 7:14
  248. flesk
  249. I don't think I was in the bait shop at all on my playthrough.
  250. eh either.
  251. 7:15
  252. Cheeseness
  253. yama: I'd also missed a bunch of stuff underground on my early playthroughs >_<
  254. 7:15
  255. yama
  256. Hearing this makes me want to replay the acts.
  257. 7:15
  258. Kim
  259. You totally should! I got so much more playing the 2nd and 3rd times
  260. I missed A LOT in Act II
  261. 7:16
  262. medacris
  263. I love the push toward silhouettes in gaming as of late, it's an aesthetic I've always been fond of
  264. 7:16
  265. kacy
  266. Well, and it's super important in terms of basic character design, too!
  267. 7:16
  268. Cheeseness
  269. I love that we've just switched who we're controlling
  270. 7:16
  271. GameClubFan_540218 [47cea08a@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  272. 7:16
  273. kacy
  274. A good, recognizable silhouette is important.
  275. 7:17
  276. GameClubFan_631152 [4a6341a4@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  277. 7:17
  278. GameClubFan_759999 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  279. 7:17
  280. medacris
  281. Kacy: Indeed! TF2 and DoTA 2 were intentionally designed so everyone had a unique silhouette, for example.
  282. 7:17
  283. Cheeseness
  284. cc_jake, cc_tamas: Why the horseshoe throwing motif for moving?
  285. 7:17
  286. TheMightySwordfish [4d6312c9@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  287. 7:17
  288. Cheeseness
  289. And now we're directing Conway's dialogue again
  290. 7:18
  291. cc_jake
  292. Cheeseness: ha, just a playful experiment that stuck i think ...
  293. 7:18
  294. Cheeseness
  295.
  296. 7:18
  297. kacy
  298. medacris: And you can totally tell just by looking at them. A distinguishable silhouette is what helps each character stand out from the rest! Which is great for distinguishing character classes.
  299. 7:19
  300. Mimness
  301. Where did you get your character inspirations from?
  302. 7:19
  303. medacris
  304. I really do feel like I'm in a sleepy Southern town reading the dialogue.
  305. 7:19
  306. Syd
  307. I like that foggy effect on the word "Zero" whenever it shows up.
  308. 7:19
  309. yama
  310. Syd, I was just thinking that, too.
  311. 7:19
  312. Cheeseness
  313. Yeah, that is great
  314. 7:20
  315. cc_jake
  316. we got that idea from "House of Leaves"
  317. the word "House" is always typeset differently from the other text in that book
  318. 7:20
  319. Babar left the room (quit: Ping timeout: 181 seconds).
  320. 7:20
  321. yama
  322. I like how there's not a whole dialogue tree to exhaust and that we only get to pick one choice to progress the dialog.
  323. 7:20
  324. medacris
  325. @cc_jake: Everyone I've known who read that book absolutely loved it.
  326. 7:21
  327. cc_jake
  328. medacris: it's pretty cool! especially if you're into genre stuff, it's a really interesting take on the haunted house genre
  329. 7:21
  330. Kim
  331. cc_jake: Rad! I love how much thought and attention to detail you put in this game.
  332. 7:21
  333. Cheeseness
  334. The visual style of KR0 changed a lot from the Kickstarter pitch vid. How long did it take you to arrive at this style?
  335. 7:21
  336. kolcoont [8e810885@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  337. 7:21
  338. medacris
  339. @cc_jake: I'm a newbie to horror and macabre stuff in general, but I like Neil Gaiman, and I've read a little Stephen King.
  340. 7:22
  341. TheMightySwordfish left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  342. 7:22
  343. cc_tamas
  344. Cheeseness: yeah maybe about a year? There was an 'intermediary' art style along the way that was somewhere between the original kickstarter look and our final one
  345. 7:23
  346. Fhqwhgads
  347. what was that?
  348. 7:23
  349. The_Mad_Pirate [b5a5e95a@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  350. 7:23
  351. Cheeseness
  352. Oh? Is any of that stuff available to check out? I didn't discover KR0 until after act 1 was released on Steam
  353. 7:24
  354. GameClubFan_631152
  355. @cc_tamas @cc_jake I read that you guys used Blender for modeling and such. Did you guys ever feel like you were compromising or was it great?
  356. 7:24
  357. The_Mad_Pirate
  358. good afternoon peeps and peeperettes !
  359. 7:24
  360. Cheeseness
  361. Hey The_Mad_Pirate
  362. 7:24
  363. yama
  364. Wah. This bit freaked me out a bit. ^^:
  365. 7:24
  366. medacris
  367. Hello @The_Mad_Pirate!
  368. 7:24
  369. The_Mad_Pirate
  370. hi cris !
  371. 7:25
  372. yama
  373. If you say you're fine here, will you be fine for the remainder of the game?
  374. 7:25
  375. The_Mad_Pirate
  376. hi cheese !
  377. 7:25
  378. Kim
  379. yama, the whole mine kind of freaked me out!
  380. 7:25
  381. yama
  382. Kim, haha.
  383. I'm not easily freaked out but the darkness and the sounds...
  384. 7:25
  385. Cheeseness
  386. So I had my lights out at the turntable the first few times I played >_<
  387. 7:25
  388. medacris
  389. I think I remember when Act 1 came out, Patrick from Giant Bomb raved about it, and that's how I first heard about it. Their Quick Look.
  390. 7:26
  391. cc_tamas
  392. Cheeseness: lemme see if I can pull up a screenshot or two...
  393. 7:26
  394. Cheeseness
  395. Sweet
  396. 7:26
  397. Kim
  398. yama, cheeseness: so creepy!
  399. 7:26
  400. The_Mad_Pirate
  401. the art style kinda reminds me to "flashback"
  402. 7:26
  403. GameClubFan_000563 [3e4ec41b@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  404. 7:26
  405. medacris
  406. @Yama: Yeah. Minimalist horror is my favorite, all you need is a little lights and noise to do it.
  407. 7:27
  408. GameClubFan_974525 [45f8ca02@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.

  413. medactis: perfectly executed.
  414. *medacris
  415. 7:27
  416. yama
  417. There's so much history about many places in the game, or at least that's how I feel. ^^:
  418. 7:27
  419. medacris
  420. @Kim: It's okay. And yeah. I wish more horror movies nowadays did that. And I love the worldbuilding!
  421. 7:27
  422. The_Mad_Pirate
  423. I still havent found a scarier game scene than "Vampire:Bloodlines" Wraith Haunted Hotel mission.
  424. 7:27
  425. GameClubFan_728650 [569f696c@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.

  428. This turning bit is so cool.
  429. 7:28
  430. cc_tamas
  431. GameClubFan_631152: definitely wasn't a compromising modeling tool for us, we've been relying pretty heavily on the Python scripting facilities, especially for vertex coloring helpers
  432. 7:28
  433. kieran_es [5acc8aed@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  434. 7:28

  444. Good evening, Mr. Fireflower.
  445. 7:28
  446. Kim
  447. medacris: yeah, it's very cool.
  448. 7:28
  449. medacris
  450. @Fireflower: Hey!
  451. 7:28
  452. Syd
  453. Yeah, the screenshots made me think the game was in 2D, but then I saw it in motion.
  454. 7:29
  455. Fhqwhgads
  456. Holy crap that sound design is great.
  457. I have music that sounds like this
  458. 7:30
  459. Syd
  460. The sounds all sound like they have just the right amount of reverb and such to sound exactly like they're coming from the sort of environment they're supposed to be in. It's really immersive.
