  1. TURN.29
  2. <<Terada Memories>>
  3. The first appearance of grizzled Aggressor Kai Kitamura was in a novel called Operation SRW, 10-ish years ago. He's shown from behind in an illustration. I remember thinking, "Boy, I wish I could be a boss like this guy..." when we were working out the character concept. But I'm actually pretty different from him, huh. (Terada)
  4.
  5. TURN.30
  6. <<Terada Memories>>
  7. Wodan Ymir is designed to be close conceptually to Sänger's Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden incarnation. He's an enemy that wears a mask, which is kind of a copout I know, and he's a dark-side character. Since we wanted to emphasize his way of rushing forward and slashing with no room for reasoning, we gave him a katana in his illustration. Incidentally, the design of his mask comes from Yasufuji, the designer of the Dygenguar. From what I've seen, there were a lot of people who assumed it was Sänger in disguise when he first showed up. (Terada)
  8.
  9. TURN.31
  10. <<Terada Memories>>
  11. Something I've always thought about the Persönlichkeit is that it reminds me of the kind of bosses that show up in old NES Japanese-style action games. That takes me back. Incidentally - Those two oni masks and the katana she holds have names. The former are called Onibosatsu (Oni Bodhisattva), and the latter is called Onirenge (Oni Lotus). They're named that to fit with the special attack it uses, Raigoue (来迎会 - Buddhist service in Pure Land Buddhism that depicts Amitabha coming to offer salvation to the dead). (Terada)
  12.
  13. TURN.32
  14. <<Terada Memories>>
  15. The Inspector members like Mekibos and Vigagi fall into the categorry of Pretty Old Stuff. I had them pictured as dangerously powerful enemies, but when I went back and reread the SRW3 scenario scripts while working on the OG2 story, I was impressed with how quirky and funny they were, lol. That's why their first appearance in OG2 is designed to be a throwback to their image from SRW3. (Terada)
  16.
  17. TURN.33
  18. <<Terada Memories>>
  19. That distinctive design (RXR) on the ART-1's shield is something Katoki came up with. The mech it was based on had an extremely short name, R-1 (Ar-one), so it was pretty hard deciding on a name for this one. At first we were going to use R-1 Next, but in the end, we put a T in the name to make it "Art-one" instead. Katoki appreciates the fact that it's not all that different from its predecessor, and I've also personally taken a shine to it.
  20.
  21. TURN.34
  22. <<Terada Memories>>
  23. The name of Rai's personal BGM, ICE MAN, comes from the callsign of a character from a certain movie about fighter jets. That character isn't exactly the basis for Rai's concept, but he was also someone that, even though people called him cool as ice, could still get pretty heated at times. Also, the name Raidiese was taken from part of a certain band's song. (Terada)
  24.
  25. TURN.35
  26. <<Terada Memories>>
  27. We had the R-3 in mind from the start as a feminine-style mecha. The R-2 has a pretty drastic transformation, but the R-3 goes through an even larger change in form. For that reason, instead of a normal seat-type cockpit, it's a vertical type... meaning Aya pilots the R-3 standing up. (Terada)
  28.
  29. TURN.36
  30. <<Terada Memories>>
  31. The Full Armor Lion, or Armorlion for short, is something we'd been considering since the original GBA OG days. It's heavily modified using spare parts cobbled together from the Gespenst Mk-II, Hückebein, and Alteisen. I asked Ono to design it to be like the kind of Frankenstein robots kids would make by mashing together parts from different plamo sets. It does a good job of integrating both PT and AM linework, and I rather like it personally. (Terada)
  32.
  33. TURN.37
  34. <<Terada Memories>>
  35. The reason I sought out Shinichiro Miki for Ryusei's voice was because I was personally fond of his loud yelling. It's been over ten years now since we first cast him, but Miki still has a tenacity and subtlety to his yelling that I love. As an aside, the last time we went out for drinks together, we nerded out a bunch over Zambot 3. (Terada)
  36.
  37. TURN.38
  38. <<Terada Memories>>
  39. Giada and Garnet don't get much time in the spotlight, but they're in an important position where they're there to guide the young (not that they're exactly old themselves). In OG Gaiden, they become parents to twins, and that's because the same thing happened to someone I know. Also, Sachiko Kawano was the one to name them Alec and Sunday. (Terada)
  40.
  41. TURN.39
  42. <<Terada Memories>>
  43. The Lion series is designed to always have -lion at the end of its names, so the Barrelion is naturally Barrel (of a gun) + Lion. I remember how easily we settled on that name. The name Tenzan comes from a carrier-based attack craft in the old Japanese navy (There's also one called the Ryusei, just for the record). He's an enemy character that I'm personally pretty fond of, much like Archibald. (Terada)
  44.
  45. TURN.40
  46. <<Terada Memories>>
  47. Elzam's alias, Rätsel Feinschmecker, is intended to mean "mysterious gourmand". When we tried putting it in German, it sounded a lot like a name, so we went with it. A tidbit of trivia - One of the reasons Elzam married Cattleya was "Because she's a better cook than I am." There are more reasons, like "Because Trombe liked her." (Terada)
  48.
  49. TURN.41
  50. <<Terada Memories>>
  51. This year (2010) is the Year of the Tiger. Incidentally, Studio Nue, which employs the designer, Kazutaka Miyatake, sent out its annual New Year's cards this year with Ryukooh and Koryuoh illustrations on them. Incidentally, I hope the Kansai Tigers do well this year... That's got nothing to do with my job, of course. I just want it to happen. (Terada)
  52.
  53. TURN.42
  54. <<Terada Memories>>
  55. The Schutzwald is kind of underwhelming, but it's surprisingly popular, apparently. Its name means "protection forest" in German, as in, a forest to protect from the wind (enemies). Basically, we gave it a name to signify how it was usable for support attacks and support defense. It helps that the name sounds mecha-ish anyway. (Terada)
  56.
  57. TURN.43
  58. <<Terada Memories>>
  59. The enemy mech featured in the OVA, the Bartoll, was designed to have a certain eerieness about it as a mass production model. For the prototype version, the Mironga, we gave it a color scheme with an edgy hero kind of vibe. Its first appearance was in an OVA drama CD, and there was no image for it at the time, but I remember being thrilled with how cool-looking it turned out when we designed it for OGs.
  60.
  61. TURN.44
  62. <<Terada Memories>>
  63. On rare occasions, people have told me they want an action game or a shooter game that uses OG mechs. Something like the R-1 or the Weissritter might be pretty easy to use, but I wonder how the Alteisen or the Riese would handle. It doesn't have any long-range weapons... (Terada)
  64.
  65. TURN.45
  66. <<Terada Memories>>
  67. Among the Elementals, I'm a fan of the Jaohm. It's the first mech Masaki pilots (based on choices), and it's got a surprising resemblance to the Cybuster... If this was a TV series, it's the kind of mech that it wouldn't be a surprise to see getting turned into merch, but it doesn't get the best treatment. Is that because of the next person to pilot it? Lol. (Terada)
  68.
  69. TURN.46
  70. <<Terada Memories>>
  71. Yang Long and Chinese sayings go hand in hand. There are a lot of complicated and difficult characters in Chinese sayings. Reviewing them is like taking a kanji test. I can read them, but I could never write them. I'm growing increasingly convinced that the people who write them pick out the most difficult characters on purpose, lol. It's educational, though. If I had more time, I'd look into their origins. (Terada)
  72.
  73. TURN.47
  74. <<Terada Memories>
  75. Sometimes people like to argue about how much sugar to put into sukiyaki, though that might be specific to a certain region. Anyway, thinking back to my memories about Tytti... I remember her name being really hard to type on a keyboard. I still mess up typing it sometimes. Gaddes is way easier to type, though. (Terada)
  76.
  77. TURN.48
  78. <<Terada Memories>>
  79. Back in the first incarnation of OG on the GBA, we were limited in what we could fit on the cartridge, so we had to cut back on enemy variety. One of the ideas we came up with while grasping at straws was Atad's Trauma Shadows. Originally we wanted to make them actual shadows (as in completely black figures), but that felt more like a P2 color for a fighting game mirror match. (Terada)
  80.
  81. TURN.49
  82. <<Terada Memories>>
  83. The name Rio is borrowed from the daughter of a good friend of mine. We were quick to settle on Rio Natsuki as her VA, both because of the shared name, and because her voice fit the character. Rio will also be appearing in the currently airing (as of 2010) The Inspector anime, so look forward to that. (Terada)
  84.
  85. TURN.50
  86. <<Terada Memories>>
  87. People around me often ask me, "What kind of end is in store for that lady?" about Mitsuko. She's a pretty nasty character, even among OG villains. I love badguys that have some charm to them, but I also don't mind if a character gets seriously hated by people. Personally, I'm rather fond of Mitsuko. (Terada)
  88.
  89. TURN.51
  90. <<Terada Memories>>
  91. Man, we've gone past 50 entries now. I never thought we'd go this high... It's a good feeling. I hope we keep going. In The Inspector anime, we had a scene where we put the Fairlion theme to lyrics sung by Latune's VA Riko Hirai and Shine's VA Reina Kaihara. Embarrassingly enough, I wrote the lyrics. (Terada)
  92.
  93. TURN.52
  94. <<Terada Memories>>
  95. The three Egret brothers (technically there are more than three), with their confusing-as-hell names and hair and outfit colors. Sometimes even I get mixed up over who had what colors. Uruz is the original, but all of the Machinery Children, including the mass production types, don't share the same hair color or voice. They're all designed to have minute differences. (Terada)
  96.
  97. TURN.53
  98. <<Terada Memories>>
  99. The Bylefol and Jaldabaoth's distinctive hair is called "Kihatsu" (機髪 - lit. mech hair). Also, the weapons on its hands are called "Hadohkoh" (覇動吼), and the Shura Gods' hearts have the name "Hadohrenjin" (覇動煉心). Kihatsu aside, I'm betting people from my generation can probably guess the source of the other two names. (Terada)
  100.
  101. TURN.54
  102. <<Terada Memories>>
  103. My first encounter (?) with Aguija was in the SFC version of SRW3, a decade and change ago. I was floored to see an alien using phrases like "darling", maybe it was her translator or something. We brought a character like that back in the 2000s, so who knows what'll happen if this series keeps going? (Terada)
  104.
  105. TURN.55
  106. <<Terada Memories>>
  107. The Gustlander is an underwater heavy tank from OG. It's also known as the Blue Buffalo, which made me go, "Wait, what?" The Grungust used to have this theme song, "Grungust Zan!!", and the Gustlander was described as a roaring heavy tank in it. Ahh, good times, good times... (Terada)
  108.
  109. TURN.56
  110. <<Terada Memories>>
  111. Lemon and Excellen are both voiced by Yuko Mizutani. In the anime The Inspector, we intended to have a scene that featured all three of her characters (the other being Alchemie) talking with each other, and I'm still disappointed we had to cut that for time constraints. (Terada)
  112.
  113. TURN.57
  114. <<Terada Memories>>
  115. In the Rein Weissritter's first appearance in the anime The Inspector, its face design is different from the game version. We felt like it should have a more alien feel as an enemy unit, so we hid its eyes. We asked Director Obari to do that while its design was being refined for the anime. (Terada)
  116.
  117. TURN.58
  118. <<Terada Memories>>
  119. Back in her DC days, Sleygh piloted a Lion and did a lot of testing for Project TD. After the DC War, she took a Calion, and in OGs2, she pilots the Vegalion, one of Project TD's main units. In Sleygh's first appearance in Alpha 2, she was piloting the Vegalion from the start, and it took a long time, but it eventually made its debut in the OG series. (Terada)
  120.
  121. TURN.59
  122. <<Terada Memories>>
  123. Rishu is supposed to be a swordmaster, but we never got much chance to depict that in the games, seeing as these were games about robot fighting, not human fighting. That's part of why I put a scene of Rishu doing swordfighting on foot in episode 15 of The Inspector. (Terada)
  124.
  125. TURN.60
  126. <<Terada Memories>>
  127. The R-1 has some of the most weapons out of any SRW original machine. It's supposed to be usable in both short and long-range combat, and that was because we were expecting to put it in some action games or something. (Terada)
  128.
  129. TURN.61
  130. <<Terada Memories>>
  131. There's a passage in the Granzon's design doc: "If the pilot possesses capabilities that surpass human knowledge, then they could wipe out all of the Earth's military forces in a day." That wasn't actually written for the OG series. It was first put down in initial files a long time ago. (Terada)
  132.
  133. TURN.62
  134. <<Terada Memories>>
  135. The Brasta was designed to be a robot that's cool in a straight, standard way. I didn't want to make it too quirky, but its designer Ono gives a lot of attention to parts like its head outline and its lower arms. Also, in its rough design phase, its eyes were in a different position. As for where they used to be? Look closely at the ear portions and you can probably tell. (Terada)
  136.
  137. SPECIAL TURN
  138. <<Terada Memories>>
  139. The character Ing is based on the protagonist of an SRW Alpha 2 spinoff comic called Lost Children, drawn by Nozomu Tamaki around a decade ago. We changed him up a lot for OGs2, but the parts that we kept were that his personality changes when he's cornered, he exhibits a hidden power, he escapes and gets pursued by his siblings the Machinery Children, and he's got amnesia. The H is supposed to be the Exbein after it gets critically damaged and then overhauled, so Hajime Katoki suggested the idea of the bandages and cobbled-together armor. That, combined with the face guard and the cape, make it an extremely distinctive personal trooper in my book. (Terada)
