They're actually scraping against crapheaps of rock. Everyone else only notices the darkening of the sub, from red to somewhat brown to pitch black.

Terrance can see that the tunnel becomes quite small, they have to get on their hands and knees to continue past this chamber. Also, he notes some markings on the walls, like huge claws gouged into the dirt.Stephi notices the same, without the huge claw gouges.
