- play a role = do a certain set of activities, for example in a job, but also actors play a role in a movie, parents have roles in the home, some societies have very specific gender roles that men and women are supposed to do
- What do the words in the box mean?
- colleague: someone in the same profession (but maybe working in a different place)
- coworker: someone you work with in the same place and in a similar position
- competitor: someone or something that is trying to reach the same goal, but you can’t both get it (a competitor is anyone or anything that competes for something)
- contestant: someone who is trying to win a contest or a game (like on a TV show)
- opponent: someone who is directly against you in a game or competition
- mentor: a person who gives you advice and support (especially one-on-one, outside of their official role as your boss or teacher or coach)
- (protege: the person that a mentor helps)
- primatologist: someone who studies nonhuman primates (monkeys, apes, lemurs, etc.)
- researcher: someone who does academic (especially scientific) study, to find new information
- investigator: someone who finds existing information, especially for law enforcement or journalism (investigative journalism)

- Words for roles/jobs:
- verb+er = person who does [verb]: teacher, researcher, coworker, manager, etc.
- (also sometimes -or: professor, investigator, actor)
- noun+ist = person who deals with (or studies) [noun]: scientist, artist, pianist, violinist, biologist
- verb+ent/verb+ant = person who does [verb]: student, assistant, opponent, contestant, resident
- (these words often go with -ence/-ance nouns: assistance, residence)

- red flag - a warning flag, to show that something is wrong
