  1. In 1994, a psychic entity known as the Abandoned appeared on Earth, generating two parallel universes, one where it was present (A) and one where it was not (B). Over time, the presence of the Abandoned became stronger and more noticeable. Although it was completely immaterial, and therefore not sensible in any conventional way, it exerted a psychic pressure on the humans of Earth that was noticeable enough to cause total divergence on a global scale by 1999.
  2.
  3. In 2015, the Abandoned released a psychic burst in universe A that immediately separated the minds of every human on the planet from their bodies, driving their psychic presence into universe B. Individuals who had a counterpart in that universe (those born before the two universes diverged) took refuge in their B counterpart's bodies. Those that had no counterpart to enter seemed to disappear. In fact, they actually naturally combined together, forming a new version of the Abandoned which only became apparent several years later. This entry into the B universe resulted in the development of various psychic powers in humans, based on the relationship (or lack thereof) between the two minds sharing the body.
  4.
  5. The rarest variation were Cohesives, who had minimal conflict between the two minds, and were able to combine both into a single personality. These were primarily individuals who were old enough at the divergence point that their personalities were already well established, so by the entry point most Cohesives were elderly. Cohesives have the strongest psychic capacity, using the psychic power of both minds, and are able to forcefully control the bodies of other animals or knock them unconscious over long distances (dozens of kilometers).
  6. A similar variation was Cooperatives, who had distinct personalities, but shared enough aspects to form a system of shared dominance, whether it acts on a schedule or a system of divided responsibilities. Cooperatives generally only have the psychic capacity of whichever mind is active at any given time, but with some effort, can achieve the power of a Cohesives for a short period of time. Cooperatives, through the constant process of mediating between the two minds, gain the ability to send and receive information with other willing humans over any distance.
  7. A-Dominants were individuals who had enough conflict between the two minds that the two fought for control, and the entering A personality managed to gain complete control, while the original B personality became dormant. A-Dominants, as a result of the successful conflict, gain the ability to send thoughts psychically into the minds of other humans. The further the thoughts are projected, the weaker the message, and more conspicuous the thoughts are. At short distances, however, these can be used to affect another individual's decision.
  8. More commonly, the original B personality was successful in cases of conflict, resulting in a B-Dominant. B-Dominants, after overpowering the other personality, develop a psychic vigilance that allow them to pick up thoughts of those around them, as well as be most sensitive to the second Abandoned.
  9. In rare cases where both minds were equally matched, but still in conflict, they may enter a state of perpetual competition, resulting in a Competitive. This internal conflict often impede's the everyday life of the Competitive, but it also allows for the growth of both minds' psychic powers, up to the level of a Cohesive. In the majority of cases, a Competitive eventually settles as an A or B-Dominant, but in some rare cases, they may become a Cooperative.
  10. Solitaries are individuals who had no living counterpart in the A universe, and have only one mind in their body. The majority of Solitaries are younger than 15 years old, and were born after the total divergence point. Solitaries are able to detect and resist psychic interference, although the psychic strength they can overcome grows with practice.
  11. Some rare individuals without a living A counterpart, rather than becoming Solitaries, became Mediums. This was most common in individuals born before the divergence point, but in some cases occurred in individuals born after. Mediums are able to, temporarily, connect to the minds of individuals without bodies, with the connection lasting longest when the age of the Mediums and second party are closest. By finding an individual of the exact same age at the time of connection (down to the hour), a Medium can form a lifelong connection, generally taking on the abilities of a Cooperative.
  12.
  13. The degree that the two personalities can compete or cooperate is an unconscious process, more similar to the acceptance or rejection of a transplant organ than socialization between two individuals.
  14.
  15. The Second Abandoned is made of the collective psychic energy of approximately 70 million people who were unable to find a counterpart in the B universe. This is much smaller than the A universe's Abandoned, and as a result each individual mind has more independence, and the overall behaviour of the Second Abandoned is different. Rather than an overall psychic pressure, which was unable to convey meaning, the Second Abandoned manifests as focused phenomena in localized areas, where it produces visions of individuals or memories from within it. These phenomena can be exorcised with some difficulty by Solitaries, or more easily by Mediums, which are able to directly communicate with the individual at hand.
