- In any other moment of my life, the prospect of managing to go on a date with someone else was terrifying. I couldn’t even see myself doing it at all. My mind always drew blanks if I tried to fit myself in such a setting. However, when Mami asked if I was interested I didn’t feel nervous at all. We did stuff together before, but we never outright said they were dates. Yet again I probably overthought the meaning of “Do you want to walk around on Saturday?” However isn’t there a difference between hanging out with someone you happened to see in the moment, and specifically asking them if they want to?
- Yeah I’m over thinking this.
- I exited the house and began walking down the street. For me, my mind probably rationalizes that if we’ve already been in a situation like this there’s nothing to be afraid of. Even if I saw it as a usual get together would Mami have different expectations? I stopped and looked at the sky.
- Nothing, I expected my body to flinch in response to that realization.
- I continued on along until she came into view. She gazed off into the distance as she waited for me, shifting her bag on occasion and straitening her daffodil tinged sundress. I snuck behind her while she sat on a bench, and clapped my hands together. She turned her head at me with a slight smile, got up, and spoke, “I thought I saw you walking over here,” she said walking over besides me. Surprisingly enough, I gave her a quick embrace and reached for her hand without any self-hindrance. I thought Mami paused somewhat and gasped, but it happened too fast for me to tell.
- We ambled some, and during that timeframe her face turned a bit red. Her pace became irregular. Sometimes she’d walk too swift and other times she might as well had come to a halt. I’m also sure most of the sweat on my hand was hers.
- “Is there something wrong?” I asked.
- “It’s nothing, just…kind of hot out.” She replied, her voice slightly fluctuating.
- We came by a large tree that the two of us always stopped at to rest, and take in the nearby pond’s view. I sat under the tree and Mami followed, straitening her dress before kneeling. Together we basked even more silence. I’m not one to usually care, but Mami was one of the few people I felt comfortable conversing with. It felt like a waste to just spend the day walking.
- “Anon, what made you so bold today?” She asked some laughter laced in.
- “Uh, bold?”
- “You never tried to scare me before, and then you hugged me after that,” She said while appearing more or less back to her old self, “I got a bit nervous when you took my hand too.”
- I wanted to reply, but nothing came to mind. I woke up this morning carefree and this was the result. Though it didn’t really concern me that much.
- Mami nudged over beside me. Then after a few moments she closed her eyes and put her head on my shoulder.
- “After this we can go see a movie if you want, it’ll be like a date.”
- “Sure.” A smile spread across Mami’s face after my reply.
- I blurted it out so fast that I didn’t actually realize what I agreed to.
- My breath shortened and my heart felt as if it was going to burst.
