- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was formed from Kodakan Judo ground fighting fundamentals that were taught to Carlos Gracie and Luiz Franca by Mitsuyo Maeda. Carlos Gracie is known is that founder of brazilial jiu jitsu a long side of Helio who didn't learn until a later stage as he was sick for a very long time. Jiu Jitsu became it's own sport through experiments and the adaption of judo from Carlos and Helio gracie. They then passed the knowledge on to family members and so forth. Brazlian jiu jitsu promotoes the concept that the smaller guy or weaker person can defend themselves againsta bigger or stronger person. Jiu jitsu stands for the gentle art and became popular in the early 90's when the Gracie family created the UFC and becamse recognized world wide.
