- [17:35] <Immortius> I believe
- [17:35] <Klaimen> does that work without admin privilege?
- [17:36] <Immortius> should do, but you will need to be on a registered nick to be opped

- [17:36] <Immortius> probably need a registered nick to do it at all
- [17:36] <Klaimen> yeah

- [18:05] <RobitStudios> yeah, it was definitely the most common comment on the game

- [18:06] <RobitStudios> we were in a great location on the floor (which is in part because I got there so early)
- [18:06] <RobitStudios> so the banner was positioned so lots of people could see it

- [18:11] <Klaimen> how many people got to test the demo?
- [18:11] <Klaimen> just roughly counted
- [18:12] <RobitStudios> we estimated about 100 people played? right beta?
- [18:12] <Klaimen> 100!
- [18:12] <RobitStudios> that might be a little high though
- [18:12] <beta_red> Yeah, It's really hard to tell, we had people at the booth just about constantly--with literally about 10 minutes (cumulative) downtime each day
- [18:12] <Mazey> RobitStudios, mind linking that demo to your awesome backers
- [18:12] <RobitStudios> some people sat and played for 10-15 mins but a lot of people jsut for a couple mins
- [18:13] <Klaimen> they left early cause the queue was so long and they wanted others to play, too?
- [18:13] <Pave> Well, it was "Minecon" after all. And to me knowledge at least, I believe many of the visitors were mainly there for Minecraft and related...
- [18:13] <Klaimen> oh
- [18:14] <Klaimen> i always forget about that lol
- [18:14] <beta_red> Yeah, we had a few people leave due to long lines, but quite a few came back on day 2 and got to play
- [18:14] <Pave> But still having curious players testdriving the game is decent already.
- [18:14] <RobitStudios> you know, i should probably do that, Mazey - i kind of wanted to tweak a couple of things before i release it - but if anyone here wants to try the demo email me and i'll get it to you steveorlando@gmail.com
- [18:14] <Klaimen> how long do you think the tweaking will take?
- [18:14] <RobitStudios> hopefully just another week or so
- [18:15] <Klaimen> hm hm hm
- [18:15] <RobitStudios> i took abotu a page of notes watching people play the game
- [18:15] <fetalstar> i think on my end, i just need to edit one npc animation, and add the nighttime ones
- [18:15] <Klaimen> can i wait that long
- [18:15] <RobitStudios> so i want to implement some of that stuff first
- [18:15] <Pave> Hah, I'm more than happy to help with optimization; my current computer is such a perfect "disaster" and "nightmare" to devs. :P

- [18:15] <Mazey> lol
- [18:15] <Pave> Aka. it's far from ideal testing-enviroment builds. XD

- [18:16] <Klaimen> tempting!
- [18:16] <Klaimen> i'll wait for now
- [18:16] <Klaimen> will it be ok for you if i stream the game live on twitch?
- [18:16] <RobitStudios> well Pave, thats good to know, the game needs some optimization for sure and I'd like to test it on a rig like yours

- [18:17] <Klaimen> great!

- [18:21] <RobitStudios> like an early alpha basically
- [18:21] <Klaimen> cool
- [18:22] <darcro> Im really glad you guys are getting a demo/beta out there for TAW
- [18:22] <Ordine> The free DD is still really good.
- [18:22] <Klaimen> should be enough to figure out if it's my thing
- [18:22] <RobitStudios> yeah, me too - doing minecon gave me the confidence to release a demo
- [18:22] <RobitStudios> and i also think we're going to do a sort of early access thing for backers now too
- [18:22] <darcro> From the stories I know of DD and BroForce, the free availability of their games helped them spread a lot
- [18:23] <RobitStudios> where we'll essentially update the demo with new areas of the game as we get the done
- [18:23] <Klaimen> that's really nice to hear!
- [18:23] <darcro> That's awesome
- [18:23] <darcro> I am always scared to play beta/demo though

- [18:24] <RobitStudios> haha yeah i hear you - even thought i pre-order games with early access i almost never play them
- [18:24] <RobitStudios> i kind of want to get the full experience when its done
- [18:24] <darcro> That's exactly how I feel ^^
- [18:24] <RobitStudios> i mean, its so easy to get burnt out on a game
- [18:24] <RobitStudios> why do that to yourself before its even done
- [18:24] <darcro> Totally
- [18:24] <RobitStudios> thats just my opintion anyway
- [18:24] <beta_red> Thanks Ordine! :) Glad to hear it!
- [18:24] <Klaimen> yeah. i guess so too, but since we know TAG it's kind of a different situation
- [18:24] <darcro> But it does seem to work for a lot of people
- [18:25] <darcro> They'll base their purchase on a trial
- [18:25] <Klaimen> it's like playing a remake, so that's fine for me
- [18:25] <Klaimen> (actually it is lol)
- [18:25] <RobitStudios> thats true - plus with a game like tag (not a sandbox style game) there's always going to be stuff you havent seen until the game is released
- [18:25] <RobitStudios> *taw
- [18:26] <Klaimen> yeah you wrote in the blog that you are hiding super secret things
- [18:26] <Ordine> How goes the Steam Greenlight?
- [18:26] <Klaimen> i wonder what those will be :P
- [18:26] <darcro> tbh, I preordered TAW after playing TAG, but I stopped playing TAG very quickly because I didnt want to see too much xD
- [18:26] <Ordine> I see a lot of supporting comments, but how exactly does a project get approved?
- [18:27] <RobitStudios> Ordine, thats a good question
- [18:27] <RobitStudios> after talking to other devs who have been greenlit it seems like no one really knows
- [18:27] <darcro> lol xD
- [18:27] <Ordine> LOL
- [18:27] <RobitStudios> part of it has to do with your number of "yes" votes
- [18:27] <darcro> When Gabe gives the nod, it happens
- [18:28] <RobitStudios> but the other part has to do with what kind of heat the game has - and acutally getting in to things like minecon are helpful
- [18:28] <Klaimen> weird!!
- [18:28] <Mazey> why greenlight
- [18:28] <Mazey> you could also try to bypass it and get it directly on steam
- [18:28] <Klaimen> yeah, you have a publisher
- [18:28] <Klaimen> i hear that works
- [18:28] <darcro> Hmm interesting point
- [18:28] <Mazey> contact valve
- [18:29] <darcro> Why are chucklefish's other games going straight to steam?
- [18:29] <darcro> well... risk of rain just did
- [18:29] <RobitStudios> we are working on that actually
- [18:29] <darcro> wanderlust is there, and dunno about stardew
- [18:29] <RobitStudios> the demo is going to be going to steam when its ready
- [18:29] <RobitStudios> they want to play the game first before making a decision like that
- [18:29] <Klaimen> without being greenlit?
- [18:29] <Klaimen> oh
- [18:29] <RobitStudios> sorry
- [18:30] <Klaimen> to valve
- [18:30] <RobitStudios> i worded that wrong
- [18:30] <RobitStudios> i mean we're going to send it to the people who make those decisions at steam

- [18:30] <Klaimen> yeah ok
- [18:30] <darcro> Ah cool
- [18:30] <darcro> What is your relationship with chucklefish?

- [18:30] <RobitStudios> but they wont approve a game until they get to try it

- [18:35] <RobitStudios> yeah there was a spike in votes this week - so it seems so
- [18:35] <darcro> You said you had around 100 people playing your demo, but how much traffic do you think you had coming passed your stand, getting those sorta cards?
- [18:35] <beta_red> Was anyone here in the chat at minecon by any chance?
- [18:35] <Klaimen> that's really cool
- [18:35] <beta_red> I mean, other than stephen and I
- [18:36] <Ordine> I wish I lived in the USA or something.
- [18:36] <RobitStudios> yeah, so many people just stopped by and grabbed buttons and cards
- [18:36] <RobitStudios> and some people just watched the game and talked to us about it
- [18:36] <Ordine> So hard to get into cons or grab some merch.
- [18:36] <RobitStudios> so we really interacted with a lot of people
- [18:36] <RobitStudios> where do you live, ordine?
- [18:36] <darcro> heh Ordine, I know the feel!
- [18:36] <Ordine> Philippines.
- [18:36] <RobitStudios> oh wow, yeah thats quite a hike
- [18:37] <darcro> I saw your merch on your news page and was 10xjealous
- [18:37] <Ordine> Right.
- [18:37] <Klaimen> those buttons would sure be nice to have ;D
- [18:37] <RobitStudios> im going to give away some merch on twitter soon - i have a bunch of buttons left
- [18:37] <darcro> Ship international? xD
- [18:37] <Klaimen> robit, talking about the greenlight page
- [18:37] <Ordine> Cool.
- [18:37] <darcro> like....South Africa direction? :P
- [18:38] <Klaimen> maybe you should add a link to the pre-order page
- [18:38] <RobitStudios> i will - but since its kind of costly im going to ship im going to set it up like a contest - so for like every tweet about the game you get put in a drawing
- [18:38] <RobitStudios> and i'll send out packs of swag
- [18:38] <Klaimen> there are links to all kinds of place, but not where the money must go X)
- [18:38] <RobitStudios> yeah! thats a good call klaimen
- [18:38] <darcro> a bag o' swag!
- [18:39] <Ordine> Funny thing about shipping in RP is that the shipping costs are way higher than the item itself.
- [18:39] <darcro> yeah lol... ebay shopping, $3 for item, ships for $20
- [18:39] <RobitStudios> yeah, exactly - but since they're just buttons i'll put them in envelopes or something
- [18:40] <Ordine> Ain't nobody got time for that
- [18:40] <RobitStudios> hopefully it'll keep the cost down
- [18:40] <Klaimen> yeah that shouldn't be too high shipping costs
- [18:40] <darcro> yeah ordinary post should be much better
- [18:40] <beta_red> Yeah, I remember my roommate and I bought E.T. for atari for a penny, and the shipping was…not a penny.
- [18:40] <Klaimen> doesn't matter if it takes like 6 weeks
- [18:40] <Pave> Heh. Being a Finn myself, money-things are a bit more complex over here.
- [18:40] <Klaimen> beta_red, why would you buy THAT game?!
- [18:40] <Ordine> You could say it cost him a lot of pennies
- [18:40] <beta_red> I don't know!!! It was so bad!!!
- [18:40] <darcro> speaking of faraway countries, thanks for moving the chat time
- [18:41] <Klaimen> lol!
- [18:41] <beta_red> Haha! :D
- [18:41] <Ordine> Pffftlol
- [18:41] <Klaimen> oh yeah, this is a much better time
- [18:41] <RobitStudios> no problem, dacro - yeah it seems like most of my fans are actually NOT in the states so im trying to be flexible
- [18:41] <Silly> Hello
- [18:42] <RobitStudios> hi, Silly! welcome!
- [18:42] <Ordine> Hi
- [18:42] <beta_red> Hey Silly! Welcome to the chat!
- [18:42] <Pave> I mean, sure one could get a more easier start as a game dev due unemployance benefits and such (since with info I've gotten, you only need to start worrying about taxes and such until your sales and so on exceed the benefits).
- [18:42] <fetalstar> hello!
- [18:42] <darcro> As game developers, how much time do you spend playing games? :P
- [18:42] <Pave> But in my personal case "I'd have to already have dunds to gain more funds", being a personal without sedan and living in the middle of nowehere. XD
- [18:42] == everettjlamb [~everettjl@CPEc8fb2643fc31-CMc8fb2643fc2e.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com] has joined #[REDACTED]
- [18:43] <Silly> Oh. The chat is still going. Was wondering if it was going to be one by the time I checked back. .
- [18:43] <RobitStudios> dacro - i really dont get much time - probably less than an hour a day on average
- [18:44] <RobitStudios> but i usually save that all up for the weekend
- [18:44] <beta_red> It's funny, when it's crunch time, with regards to dev, I have very little time to play any games, but when things get a bit more relaxed, I definitely spend a fair amount of time on them :)
- [18:44] <Ordine> Does that bother you?
- [18:44] <fetalstar> UH
- [18:44] <fetalstar> no comment
- [18:44] <RobitStudios> sort of - but i like making games more than playing them really
- [18:44] <RobitStudios> so im happy :)
- [18:44] <RobitStudios> and im just more selective about what i play
- [18:44] <Klaimen> what games did you play lately?
- [18:44] <Ordine> Ah. Not being able to play is kinda frustrating.
- [18:45] <darcro> Well atleast there are times that you get to play, hehe
- [18:45] <darcro> But I guess if making them is just as good, then no need
- [18:45] <Pave> I personally wish I could someday be some-sort-of game producer; my brain-capacity cannot handle deticated-jobs (such as coders and "arts"), but I still have the basic knowledges.
- [18:45] <RobitStudios> ive been playing desktop dungeons this weekend- but ive also been playing a lot of Luigis Mansion for the 3DS lately
- [18:45] <beta_red> It is kind-of ironic, but sometimes it works out well, b/c you don't get to buy a game until it's in the bargain bin, but then it feels like you're getting an amazing game for just a few bucks :)
- [18:46] <beta_red> I'm a demon's souls and dark souls fanatic.
- [18:46] <Ordine> Are you guys into Monster Hunter?
- [18:46] <Klaimen> hehe all cool :)
- [18:46] <beta_red> I dig monster hunter, but I wish it had a bit less text to read
- [18:46] <RobitStudios> i picked up the 3DS demo and ive been watching the GameGrumps play it - but thats about it
- [18:46] <Tolipohs> Waiting for 4 to come here.
- [18:47] * Pave looks at his digital shelves...
- [18:47] <darcro> Ive been writing up my thesis, and dsektop dungeons is perfect because you can drop in for a quick dungeon or 2, and you are done in2 0 minutes
- [18:47] <fetalstar> i've been playing ff14 :X
- [18:47] <centreti> out of curiosity (also idk if this has previously been addressed), what language(s)/framework(s), etc do you guys use to dev?
- [18:47] <Ordine> Ahh the "story" dialogue.
- [18:47] <darcro> 20 minutes*
- [18:47] <Ordine> MH4 sweet jesus. I haven't completed 3u yet, but I want it.
- [18:47] <Klaimen> i just realize i play almost only indie games nowadays
- [18:47] <Klaimen> well. and retro
- [18:48] <RobitStudios> centreti - we're using a middleware software called Construct (which is coded in c++) but it uses a combination of visual editor and python for scripting
- [18:48] <Pave> Monster Hunter Topic-wise, I personally like Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd most; Tri-ones and 4th are a bit too spectacle creeps to me...
- [18:48] <darcro> wow so most of the code is written in python?
- [18:48] <RobitStudios> its specifically geared for 2d games and is perfect for platformers
- [18:49] <Ordine> Stuff like this makes me regret that I kinda slept through my programming classes.
- [18:49] <centreti> thanks for the response :D
- [18:49] <beta_red> Yeah, exactly! I dig dialogue in games, but I found with monster hunter, sometimes I'd spend like half the playtime in dialogue. Monster Hunter is awesome though.
- [18:49] <centreti> Python is fun stuff!
- [18:49] <Klaimen> lol monster hunter sounds like metal gear solid then, when it comes to that
- [18:49] <Ordine> I would agree if somebody stated that MH3U was way easy.
- [18:49] <RobitStudios> a lot of functions are in python, but not all of them
- [18:49] <Ordine> Compared to MHF(U) at least.
- [18:50] <RobitStudios> since python runs a little slower i reserve it for things that dont run every frame
- [18:50] <Klaimen> Construct is HTML5 right?
- [18:50] <RobitStudios> the new Construct 2 is
- [18:50] <RobitStudios> but the one we're usign is Direct X
- [18:50] <Pave> Yeah, in my opinion, the spectacle creep of Metal gear series started on Sons of Liberty (the second Solid game), while the Third and other Big Boss related games kinda had their feets on ground.
- [18:51] <centreti> So you use the visual editor for everything that you don't use Python for?
- [18:51] <Klaimen> Pave, you're absolutely right
- [18:51] <RobitStudios> yeah and everything in the visual editors gets converted to C++ upon compiling
- [18:51] <darcro> So the Python isnt compiled down to C++ by construct? It remains interpreted?
- [18:51] == oj [~oj@cable-37-51.sssnet.com] has quit []
- [18:51] <centreti> Ahhh that sounds pretty neat
- [18:51] <Ordine> How did you guys make GOG put you in their library BTW.
- [18:52] <RobitStudios> yes, thats right, all the python code is interpreted at runtime
- [18:52] <RobitStudios> Ordine, they approached me about it when they were looking to get mroe into Indie games
- [18:52] <RobitStudios> since i had jsut released TAG as freeware
- [18:52] <RobitStudios> they wanted to include it as a freebie to their users
- [18:53] <Pave> Write or wrong, I've just been rather critical on various things ever since I was born besically; heck I'm one of those kids don't "love" Tom & Jerry, while I cannot deny the animation qualities and such.
- [18:53] <RobitStudios> i alsmot didnt bother since they wanted me to fill out all this paper work
- [18:53] <Ordine> Well that's a good thing.
- [18:53] <RobitStudios> but im really glad i did
- [18:53] <everettjlamb> hope to see taw on gog. I'll share gog/your tweet of the gog release.
- [18:53] <RobitStudios> thats how Tiy discovered it
- [18:53] <RobitStudios> and thats how we got to this point :)
- [18:53] <RobitStudios> happy accidents
- [18:53] <RobitStudios> everett, we'll be on gog for sure
- [18:54] <RobitStudios> ive already been in touch with them
- [18:54] <everettjlamb> gog is good, both community and people :)
- [18:54] <RobitStudios> as long as we pass their QA test we're in
- [18:54] <everettjlamb> great news :)
- [18:54] <Pave> Though, I am rather easily amused however....
- [18:54] * Pave stares at "Eat Lead: return of Matt Hazzard".
- [18:54] <Klaimen> It's pretty cool, it's the first thing you see when you sign up on GOG
- [18:55] <darcro> Did you guys record how many preorders came in during minecon?
- [18:55] <darcro> was it more/less than what you expected?
- [18:55] <RobitStudios> exactly - they told me TAG has been downloaded over 500,000 times
- [18:55] <Klaimen> o.o
- [18:55] <Klaimen> half a million
- [18:55] <RobitStudios> yeah
- [18:55] <RobitStudios> now whether all those people played it - i dont know
- [18:55] <fetalstar> i sort of kept an eye on it... i'd say we've gotten like........... 50 new preorders since minecon?
- [18:55] <RobitStudios> i think it was more than that
- [18:56] <fetalstar> really?
- [18:56] <fetalstar> i don't remember
- [18:56] <RobitStudios> weren't we just around 400?
- [18:56] <RobitStudios> now we're at 476
- [18:56] <fetalstar> i thought it was morel ike 425
- [18:56] <fetalstar> ish
- [18:56] <centreti> never even heard of GOG. I need to get with it! :D
- [18:56] <centreti> -bookmarked-
- [18:56] <RobitStudios> ah, maybe you're right
- [18:56] <beta_red> Yeah, GOG is sweet! :)
- [18:56] <everettjlamb> nice to see gog more well-known
- [18:56] <RobitStudios> well either way - i think i expected more- but it's still been a big jump
- [18:57] <darcro> Im really looking forward to goal 2 being reached - i totally want to cosplay the paper hat retro model :D
- [18:57] <Klaimen> wait until the demo releases
- [18:57] <Pave> Well, I had already decided to give you extra breads even before Minecon. :P
- [18:57] <RobitStudios> i think once we have a demo and we announce the early access for backers things will pick up
- [18:57] <Ordine> GOG is a very nice site but I can't get them to work with PayPal.
- [18:57] <Pave> So enjoy your +10 breads (if each would cosr 2$) XD
- [18:57] <RobitStudios> hey, just a warning- i have to take off in 5 mins - my fiance demands I help her with dinner :)
- [18:58] <Ordine> I ended up buying the two Witcher games from Steam since they rejected the account details too many times.
- [18:58] <Klaimen> oh ok!
- [18:58] <Klaimen> will you return or does she keep you for the rest of the night?
- [18:58] <RobitStudios> you are all welcome to chat as long as you want -especially since i dont have Admin status
- [18:58] <darcro> Well Im glad I got in early to experience these chats before there are 1000s of people in the channel ;D
- [18:58] <RobitStudios> theres really nothing i can do about it
- [18:58] * Pave is indeed rather precise when it comes to money
- [18:58] <everettjlamb> sorry to hear of the paypal issues, ordine. do hope it'll be resolved soon
- [18:59] <RobitStudios> i told her we could watch old sci-fi movies tonight
- [18:59] <Ordine> Yeah. Not a good idea to keep her waiting.
- [18:59] <RobitStudios> so im going to be busy the rest of the night
- [18:59] <Klaimen> no problem
- [18:59] <darcro> Any particular movie planned?
- [18:59] <RobitStudios> well speaking of GOG - we watching an insane movie form the 50s called GOG last week
- [18:59] <beta_red> Night of the Lepus!!
- [18:59] <RobitStudios> haha yeah i already made her watcht hat one, beta
- [19:00] == Foamed [~Foamed@105.61.34.95.customer.cdi.no] has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]

- [19:00] <Klaimen> enjoy your night off, your fiancee probably deserves it after those busy weeks :)
- [19:00] <beta_red> Haha, it's so terrible and great :)
- [19:00] <RobitStudios> netflix has a ton of stuff like that
- [19:01] <RobitStudios> haha exactly, klaimen
- [19:01] <darcro> Thanks for doing these chats, its really awesome to be able to connect
- [19:01] <Pave> I personally don't get it why I'm not able to watch "rare exports" in my country via Netflix...
- [19:01] <Pave> Or at least I could few months ago...
- [19:01] <RobitStudios> no problem, dacro - i really enjoy them too
- [19:01] <RobitStudios> im convinced that we have the nicest fans ever
- [19:01] <beta_red> Yeah, you all really are awesome! :)
- [19:01] <darcro> Get to see where all the weird countries the fans come from :P
- [19:02] <Pave> Well, 10+ fans tend to be calm for the most part. ;)
- [19:02] <Klaimen> talking about old sci fi movies
- [19:02] <Klaimen> anyone know Island of Terror?
- [19:02] <beta_red> I love that we have a Global community! It's so cool! :)
- [19:02] <RobitStudios> yeah its all a numbers game
- [19:02] <Klaimen> (most common title name ever)
- [19:02] <RobitStudios> no i dont think ive heard of it
- [19:02] <RobitStudios> i'll look it up though
- [19:02] <darcro> At minecon, it sounded like you had lots of younger kids playing the game...
- [19:02] <Klaimen> it's quite hilarious
- [19:03] <darcro> is that the audience at minecon, or were they attracted towards your game specifically?
- [19:03] <Klaimen> don't expect too much X)
- [19:03] <beta_red> Yeah, we had a lot of younger kids checking out TAW
- [19:03] <Ordine> Haha that's cute.
- [19:03] <beta_red> It seemed to be the primary audience at Minecon
- [19:03] <RobitStudios> minecon was a lot of kids yeah
- [19:03] <RobitStudios> and a lot of bored parents
- [19:03] <Klaimen> where they from around the area?
- [19:03] <beta_red> Maybe 1/5 or 1/4 were teens/adults
- [19:04] <darcro> wow thats interesting
- [19:04] <darcro> I forget kids play games O_o
- [19:04] <RobitStudios> they seems like they were mostly from the States but all over the country
- [19:04] <beta_red> They were from all over actually
- [19:04] <Klaimen> cool!
- [19:04] <RobitStudios> dacro! i know me too
- [19:04] <RobitStudios> but it was eye opening
- [19:04] <beta_red> They were good at it!
- [19:04] <RobitStudios> because they seemed to really like and were really good at it
- [19:05] <RobitStudios> yeah, they acutally needed less help then the older crowrd
- [19:05] <darcro> Thats quite an interesting insight to take out
- [19:05] <RobitStudios> i know, i'll have to keep that in mind when i start doing more marketing
- [19:06] <darcro> Must be difficult securing pre-orders from parents
- [19:06] == Mazey [~Mazey01@ip545564b0.speed.planet.nl] has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
- [19:06] <Klaimen> i think the style is quite universially appealing...
- [19:06] <darcro> (where the parents arent the gamers themselves I mean)
- [19:06] <RobitStudios> some were very supportive -but yeah, if they are anything like my parents they woudlnt ever pre-order a game
- [19:06] <Klaimen> i can see how kids like it as much as we do heh
- [19:07] <RobitStudios> some of the parents were obviously big gamers
- [19:07] <RobitStudios> and we had a least one parent make their kids wait for them while they played TAW, haha
- [19:07] <darcro> LOL thats awesome!
- [19:07] <Klaimen> lol
- [19:07] <beta_red> Haha! Yeah, and a few people that came up were TAG fans as well :)
- [19:07] <RobitStudios> ok, thats it for me folks - i need to go
- [19:07] <darcro> I have to say, whoever came up with the idea of having a parrot as a buddy
- [19:07] <darcro> +10 points to you
- [19:08] <Ordine> Cheers
- [19:08] <RobitStudios> thanks again for hanging out
- [19:08] <darcro> I love the buddy aspect in games
- [19:08] <Tolipohs> Alright, thanks for this, bye.
- [19:08] <Klaimen> ok, thanks for hanging out with us, too :)
- [19:08] <beta_red> Haha, +10pts for Stephen!
- [19:08] <darcro> Thanks so much RobitStudios!
- [19:08] <RobitStudios> we'll do it again in 3 weeks
- [19:08] <darcro> Really enjoyed the chat, thanks for taking the time
- [19:08] <Klaimen> yay! 3 weeks is not much
- [19:08] <RobitStudios> first saturday of december
- [19:09] <RobitStudios> and i'll get the demo to those of you who emailed me soon
- [19:09] <RobitStudios> tonight (i swear)
- [19:09] <beta_red> I can stick around for another 10 minutes or so, if anyone has any music related questions.
- [19:09] <beta_red> Or any questions for that matter
- [19:09] <fetalstar> yeah, i'm still going to be here too

- [19:10] <darcro> So Minecon was a good experience overall?
- [19:10] <fetalstar> lmfao RobitStud
- [19:10] <darcro> LOL
- [19:10] <beta_red> Haha :D
- [19:10] <beta_red> Those are great questions!
- [19:10] <darcro> Mine was very generic :P
- [19:11] <everettjlamb> if taw is on gog, will the soundtrack be included as a goodie? hope so, the taw soundtrack is classic and memorable like tag's.
- [19:11] <beta_red> It's hard to tell how many more tracks until the oat is finished--currently, there are about 25 that are done
- [19:11] <beta_red> Thanks, man! That's great to hear! :)
- [19:11] <Ordine> Nice.
- [19:11] <beta_red> Haha "oat"--I meant ost :)
- [19:12] <beta_red> Minecon was definitely a good experience overall
- [19:12] <everettjlamb> please include taw's ost as a goodie for the gog release :P
- [19:13] <beta_red> Yeah, sorry! I totally didn't answer that, haha!
- [19:13] <beta_red> I'm not sure how we'll be packaging things, but including it sounds good to me :)
- [19:13] <darcro> What do you use as a starting point for composing a track?
- [19:14] <beta_red> The first thing I tend to do is just sit down and improvise until I come up with something that suits the mood of the location, or event
- [19:14] <beta_red> I try to keep it simple in the beginning, and then let it evolve as the composition process goes on
- [19:15] <beta_red> I think of it as gathering raw material to be refined :)
- [19:15] <Ordine> Playing the tracks using a guitar is quite challenging.
- [19:15] <darcro> ANd how long does it take from that inception to completion?
- [19:15] <Ordine> It gives me a lot of picking practice.
- [19:15] <Klaimen> oh i got a good one, when the music blog is filled up, is the game finished? it feels like there's so many tracks on there already
- [19:16] <beta_red> Haha, that's great! Yeah, I'm primarily a guitar player, but I'll often write at the keyboard.
- [19:16] == Pave [~Pave@87-93-157-104.bb.dnainternet.fi] has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]

- [19:17] <beta_red> From inception to completion it often depends on how much time I have--the shorter-end is a couple of days, and the longer end is usually a couple weeks
- [19:17] <Ordine> It also sounds nice on the harmonica.
- [19:18] <Klaimen> fetalstar, how many pieces of drawing have you done for TAW until now? i imagine yourself sitting inbetween huge stacks of drawing, and a desktop lamp
- [19:18] <beta_red> Yeah, I imagine the music blog will be full before the game is complete, because it's getting close, but I'm not entirely sure. Honestly, I'd still love to have it mastered at an external facility, but it'll depend on weather I can afford it. Currently, I'm doing the mastering myself.
- [19:19] <fetalstar> oh god
- [19:19] <fetalstar> a lot
- [19:19] <beta_red> Haha! I'd love to hear a harmonica version! :)
- [19:19] <fetalstar> wait wait, are we talking like, full images, or just game assets?
- [19:19] <Klaimen> everything
- [19:19] <fetalstar> well, i have many many PSD files full of tiles and objects
- [19:20] <fetalstar> and then each NPC has a psd dedicated to it
- [19:20] <Klaimen> beta, yeah, but well, when the blog is full, that means you can assemble the downloadable soundtrack ZIP
- [19:20] <fetalstar> with a ton of layers for each frame
- [19:20] <Klaimen> ;D
- [19:20] <fetalstar> it's a lot of work, but fortunately i work 100% digitally, so i'm not using a ton of paper, and my desk gets to stay relatively clean

- [19:21] <Klaimen> hehe, so you work with photoshop, cool!
- [19:21] <fetalstar> i actually do everything in Sai!
- [19:21] <Klaimen> oh, Sai, what's that?
- [19:21] <fetalstar> i'll bring things over to photoshop for some really minor things, and to test animations, but that's about it!
- [19:21] <fetalstar> sai is just another drawing program :3
- [19:21] <Klaimen> wikipedia: The sai (?) is a traditional weapon used in the Okinawan martial arts.
- [19:21] <fetalstar> i like it a lot
- [19:21] <darcro> lol Klaimen
- [19:22] <Klaimen> X)
- [19:22] <beta_red> Klaimen, yeah! Once the blog is full, I'll probably go over all the tracks as a whole, and do a final mastering session of all of them. You'll notice that some of them are significantly louder than others right now, and I want to go back and make sure everything is balanced and flows well as a whole.
- [19:22] <fetalstar> http://www.systemax.jp/en/sai/
- [19:22] <fetalstar> this is what i use X)
- [19:22] <Klaimen> i want to check that out, thank you fetalstar!
- [19:22] <fetalstar> yeah, no problem!
- [19:22] <Klaimen> beta, cool! i can't wait for that :)
- [19:22] <fetalstar> it's a pretty simple program, but i love how it feels
- [19:23] <fetalstar> photoshop for me is more about graphic design work, and i also use it near the end of the work process, to make small color adjustments
- [19:23] <beta_red> Yeah, man! Me too! :) I'll be going back and fixing little things I that I notice along the way too :)
- [19:23] <fetalstar> but that's about it
- [19:23] <Klaimen> fetalstar, are there are other games you made artwork for?
- [19:23] <darcro> What does it feel like to see people playing a demo with your own art and music assets in it?
- [19:23] <fetalstar> nope! TAW is the only one i've really worked on ^^
- [19:23] <fetalstar> i did some stuff for starbound
- [19:24] <Klaimen> beta, i read in that interview that you made music for other games too... right?
- [19:24] <fetalstar> nothing in game, because it's all pixel art
- [19:24] <fetalstar> but i used to do wallpapers for them, and i designed two of the races
- [19:24] <Klaimen> ah, cool... :) starbound looks so nice!
- [19:25] <beta_red> Darcro, it's funny, it's kind of nerve-wracking :) I'm always just hoping none of the sound stands-out in a bad way, haha :)
- [19:25] <darcro> I guess its a difficult thing with music, that most often if it stands out its because its bad
- [19:25] <darcro> but if its really good, it influences you without even realising it
- [19:26] <darcro> ingame that is
- [19:26] <beta_red> Klaimen, that's great! Thanks for reading that! Yeah, I've gotten to work on quite a few games over the past few years :)

- [19:26] <beta_red> Darcro, that's exactly right!
- [19:27] <beta_red> Ideally it's something that really contributes to the whole, and you don't realize how much you may like it until a few weeks later, and you think "man, I got that tune stuck in my head--that's a cool song" :)
- [19:27] <everettjlamb> the music grabs hold of one's immersion in game, that's what tag ost did for me
- [19:27] <Klaimen> yeah beta, you're working so much on new sound effects - with the art and music overhaul it sounds like you're really taking the game apart
- [19:27] <beta_red> Right on! That's great!
- [19:29] <Klaimen> yeah, that's right, the music doesn't wear out, and that really keeps the game flow going. i love travelling between islands with the various themes
- [19:29] <beta_red> Haha, yeah, it's interesting how sfx for the 8-bit/16-bit style don't always translate well to higher-quality art. The new art is so cool, I'm really hoping the new sfx will gel well with it.
- [19:29] <fetalstar> i like the new music! :D
- [19:29] <beta_red> That's great! That's definitely something I find with the castlevania games, and try to emulate
- [19:29] <beta_red> Haha! Thanks fetal!! :D
- [19:30] <darcro> So you are a 3-person team
- [19:30] <fetalstar> before the demo, the builds we had didn't have music in it, and a huge part felt missing
- [19:30] <darcro> Do you have an office/central place of work?
- [19:30] <Klaimen> i am actually looking forward to playing the demo and see how it all comes together :)
- [19:30] <fetalstar> and thenw e had the demo and everything finally felt better
- [19:30] <darcro> or do you all work in your own space?
- [19:30] <fetalstar> we have a skype chat, but that's about it :D
- [19:30] <beta_red> Haha, right on! :) It's so much fun seeing everything come together.
- [19:31] <beta_red> Yeah, it's just the three of us, but we Skype quite a bit :)

- [19:31] <beta_red> Haha! :D
- [19:31] <darcro> So you work remotely, but are you are local to each other?
- [19:31] <darcro> Or are you in different cities/states?
- [19:32] <beta_red> We're actually all in different states, and Stephens all the way on the other coast
- [19:32] <darcro> wow! So I guess getting together for Minecon was like a special occasion for you guys too :P
- [19:33] <beta_red> Definitely! I hadn't seen Stephen in over a year. We used to both live in rochester NY, where we met, but now he's in NYC, and I'm in CA

- [19:35] <darcro> lots of dropboxing? :P
- [19:35] <beta_red> Yeah, exactly--It can be difficult, but dropbox, and Skype really help.
- [19:35] <beta_red> I definitely had to upgrade my dropbox when we got started :)
- [19:35] <Klaimen> o.o
- [19:36] <Klaimen> so much!
- [19:36] <Klaimen> hm. well. uncompressed sounds and graphics take more than 2GB i guess
- [19:36] <beta_red> Haha, definitely! It's so neat seeing things pop-up in the dropbox though. I'm always excited to see what's in there every morning.
- [19:37] <SpruceZeus> good evening
- [19:37] <darcro> So do you guys keep any work-hours? Or is it free-for-all?

- [19:38] <beta_red> Yeah, for working hours, for me it's all over the place. I devote a certain number of hours/day, but sometimes they're spread out based on the other things I need to get done
- [19:39] <fetalstar> yeah, i try to get work done everyday too, but i have other work that i need to do, also.. so it's tough to balance it sometimes
- [19:40] <darcro> doing 7 day weeks?
- [19:40] <darcro> or keep weekends for downtime?
- [19:40] <fetalstar> little of both
- [19:40] <Klaimen> how much of your stuff do you think, is ready for the game, right now?
- [19:40] <beta_red> Sometimes--with gearing up for minecon, definitely. I do try to keep my weekends free though, so I'm fresh for the week :)
- [19:41] <darcro> So interesting to learn all this stuff xD

- [19:44] <everettjlamb> me too :P
- [19:44] <beta_red> Klaimen, With regards to sound, there's quite a bit that's ready to go, but we're changing how we implement the sounds, b/c right now stephen has to adjust the volumes individually, and it takes a lot of back and forth the get them right. We're planning to have a system that will allow me to make volume changes via a python script
- [19:44] <beta_red> So don't worry too much, if some of the volumes seem off in the demo (they should be close thought :) )
- [19:44] <Klaimen> oh, interesting!
- [19:44] <beta_red> *though
- [19:45] <beta_red> Right on! :)
