- Software for copying and Burning
- all Freeware or Opensource
- (compiled December 2014)
- 1. ImgBurn
- http://www.imgburn.com/
- Download page: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
- ImgBurn includes support for:
- every modern optical disc from CD to Blu-Ray
- more than 10 image formats
- authoring rewritable discs
- producing images from file compilations or discs
- building audio CDs from a variety of file types
- creating video discs on DVD, Blu-Ray, and HD-DVD
- enabling access to drives for restricted users
- endless tweaking of all aspects of the burn process.
- ImgBurn has several 'Modes', each one for performing a different task:
- Read - Read a disc to an image file.
- Build - Create an image file from files on your computer or network or you can write the files directly to a disc
- Write - Write an image file to a disc
- Verify - Check a disc is 100% readable. Optionally, you can also have ImgBurn compare it against a given image file to ensure the actual data is correct
- Discovery - Put your drive/media to the test! Used in combination with DVDInfoPro, you can check the quality of the burns your drive is producing.
- ImgBurn's advanced features may confuse you if you just want to do a basic burn. The welcome menu provides quick access to some common tasks, but other basic features such as erasing a re-writable disc are not immediately visible. Try playing around with ImgBurn for a while. Exploring the menus will certainly reveal most of what you need. However, if you simply aren’t interested in advanced functionality you may wish to check out my other recommendations. Although ImgBurn is primarily aimed at advanced users, I still feel that it deserves top spot in this category. Caution: ImgBurn is now bundled with the OpenCandy wrapped installer.
- See my reference to opencandy below!

- 5. WinX DVD Ripper:
- fast rip DVD to MP4 WMV MPEG Music iPod iPhone Android HTC Samsung
- WinX DVD Ripper is another Windows-based DVD ripper freeware that is kept up to date. The latest version was 5.6.0 built on May.04, 2014. WinX is straightforward which supports ripping DVD to MP4, WMV, MPEG, MOV, FLV and Music (MP3). No third-party codec package is needed.
- In addition, WinX DVD Ripper has plenty of preconfigured profiles for not only iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, but also PSP, HTC and Samsung. Each profile represents different video quality and file size. You can also customize profile for your Apple/Android device by adjusting video and audio parameters.
- A tip: The "Video Quality" is namely the output file video bitrate. Increasing the “Video Quality” will increase the output file size and image quality.
- How about its decryption ability? Based on test, it supports encrypted DVDs. I find a few negative comments below saying this ripper cannot rip DVDs at all. True? The fact is if you load DVD by clicking Folder, it will do! I tested John Cater and it ripped the DVD fast and smoothly. But when it comes to DVDs encrypted by strong protection system, the program will tell you that it is not able to read them. There are two options: 1. Upgrade to its Platinum edition (paid). 2. Use other programs to remove the copy protection, and then make use of WinX.

- 8. DVDFab HD Decrypter:
- Clone DVD to hard drive, two copy modes available
- DVDFab HD Decrypter (latest version 9.1.6.8 built on Sep,13 , 2014), as its name indicates, enables you to remove DVD protections and copy the DVD content to hard drive. Considering this article is about freeware, it’s necessary to point it out this HD Decrypter is just a free portion of the DVDFab application. Due to this reason, it looks like a "big" program. But actually it is very easy to handle.
- You can use the two intelligent Copy modes built in DVDFab (the free parts) to either copy the full disc or just copy the main movie. The first one copies everything the DVD has (including menus, trailer, extras, etc) while the second one only rips the movie itself. You need to purchase its other advanced features in order to output more formats, such as ripping DVD to MP4, WMV, iPhone, iPad, etc.
- DVDFab HD Decrypter only copies SOME old DVDs as its official web page states. But how it copies SOME DVDs might be inconsistent. You will need to try out the program with what you have available as success can vary.

- 10. Format Factory
- 5 Star Rating: 3 stars
- Product type: Runs as a stand-alone program on a user's computer

- PUP.Optional.OpenCandy Removal Guide
- What is OpenCandy?
- OpenCandy is a software that installs an additional program to display and/or download to your device unwanted advertisements, toolbars and may be considered privacy-invasive. These kinds of threats, called Adware, track your computer's web usage to feed you undesired ad pop-ups and some might even hijack your browser start or search pages, redirecting you to a different site or search engine than the one you had originally configured.OpenCandy is currently ranked 9 in the world of online malware
- When Malwarebytes Anti-Malware detects PUP.Optional.OpenCandy you do not immediately have to worry, because it is not a virus or other malware. But only a adware related program classified as PUP because it has a bad reputation or behavior. And in most cases the program is installed whitout your knowledge, therefore detects Malwarebytes Anti-Malware this application as PUP.Optional.OpenCandy This items are not always checked by default for removing, but we strongly recommend to remove and refuse to accept ts installation – always use custom installation not express download!

- SOME COMMENTS ON USING THIS SOFTWARE FROM USERS (FOR INFO ONLY
- by hl2guide on 25. October 2014 - 4:07 (119312)
- BurnAware Free 7.5 vs CDBurnerXP 4.5.4.5143 Review:
- My focuses:
- * Stable, reliable burns
- * High-speed burns
- I recently tried out the latest 2 versions of these free burning softwares and wanted to share my results.
- I'd been using BurnAware Free 7.5, reliably burning data discs at 10x for a while and loved using the quick-verify feature it has to data-check after compilation burn completion. However the latest version has an issue with it.
- I checked out CDBurnerXP 4.5.4.5143 to see if it could do faster burns. After my testing I can burn reliably much faster at 16x. I also like that it has a direct folder tree available and you don't need to have a separate Windows Explorer window open like for BurnAware Free.
- Outcome:I recommend people try out the latest version of CDBurnerXP as I've had great results.

- I'm happy to report that Burn Aware Free 7.7 is very stable and reliable. Checksum file validation is working again and a test run of 10 DVD-Rs for me completed fine and files were verified :D

- I recently had to get a new computer, which has caused the usual nightmares of installing, re-installing, re-registering, and learning some new programs from scratch.
- "ImgBurn" was installed. You know, after many years of working with computer programs, you get to know good design from BAD design. Frankly, "ImgBurn" is the worst piece of S*** I've ever run across-- and I've been using "3D Studio Viz" for ages! For the life of me, I could not figure out how to use it, and it was driving me up a wall.
- Similarly, the new version of "Windows Media Player" is EVEN WORSE than the earlier ones. That, ALLEGEDLY, is supposed to allow you to burn CDs-- but after many years, I have still not been able to figure out how. (That's not an exaggeration.)
- I wanted to thank you for the list of recommended programs. I was looking for something SIMPLE. I downloaded "CDBurnerXP", and figured it out RIGHT, first time, easily. I might never have found it without your help. I give this MY highest recommendation.
- by sicknero on 3. August 2014 - 16:58 (117726)
- I really don't get the problem with ImgBurn, especially why it should prompt such vitriolic feelings. I find it a breeze to use and it's easy to create a non-install version to avoid any bundling, or just download the PAF version.
- I'm with you on Media Player though, I've never liked it and would disable it completely if it wasn't needed as the engine for a couple of third-party programs I use. Media Player Classic is excellent though.
- I agree about CDBurnerXP too, it is very very good. Ususally my first choice for anything other than simple tasks with disk images. The integrated audio previewer is a nice touch.
- by Anupam on 3. August 2014 - 14:59 (117723)
- I agree about interface of ImgBurn. That's one reason why I don't use it.
- You will find BurnAware free to be good and easy to use too, with a simple interface. I used to use CDBurnerXP before, but I use BurnAware free now.
- by Profh0011 on 3. August 2014 - 16:28 (117725)
- Thanks. It's nice to know I'm not alone in my opinions of certain programs. Also good to get recommendations.
- The one thing that seems to be missing from "CDBurnerXP" is, it doesn't tell you the total length for a CD before you run it off (something "RecordNow!" did). Unless I can't find that option yet...
- I often assemble custom CDs, and more than once have gotten something down to JUST under 80 minutes.

- Just installed BurnAware Free; chose it because it works with 64 bit windows.
- The Open Candy avoidance tips worked great, no sign of it all.
- I am a total newb with DVD burners. The write-up states "A launch window lets you choose the type of project you want and leads you through the process to completion"
- Not quite true. Evidently the source video has to be in DVD video-format. Perhaps blindingly obvious to some, but worth noting for others.
- Also, there appears to be a 2Gig limit on DVD burn files.
- by MidnightCowboy on 16. June 2014 - 12:33 (116789)
- Thank you marxgyver for the information. Having just checked the program myself I confirm the presence of OpenCandy. I will make the necessary adjustments to our review. MC - Site Manager.

- Can I just add that it's easy to use ImgBurn (which also has a bundled installer) as a portable program using the method detailed here - http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=583
- This will avoid the installation process entirely and thus any unwanted bundles that might run with the installer.
- BurnAware itself has a (old but still helpful) portable development thread over at the Portableapps.com website - http://portableapps.com/node/23318
