  1. As the child of two police officers I have been surrounded by the law my entire life and it was this that peaked my interest in the subject. Law shapes the society we live in today in every way, the meaning of justice and the decisions of what is right and wrong constantly changes through common law. Law is globally used and of huge significance to how we act in society and this fascinates me. I want to achieve a degree in Law because it will open the door to my future ambition of working in a legal environment. My interest in law progressed when I started the BTEC course as we looked at various cases and comparing the facts to decide verdicts and peaked when our teacher decided to do a courtroom mock-up case. The class were put into groups of the jury, the prosecution, the defence and the judge. As the defence, myself and my group managed to clear the defendant of any wrongdoing after an hour long hearing. This gave me a central focus of applying for Law at university as I knew that it was something I was very interested in. Law is relevant in the majority of news stories we see and it affects society and the world as a whole which is like no other academic subject. English Literature and Language, another subject that I am currently taking, fits well with Law as it assists me in picking apart the small detail in Law which has found some defendants not guilty due to technicalities. Economics, my second subject, also ties in with Contract Law as the businesses are bound by regulations and standards all imposed through the Law. My study of Economics has also taught me about the legal structures of firms, the laws of health and safety and the huge payouts that executives of some firms receive upon being dismissed from their positions as their contracts have an end of employment term. Both English and Economics are subjects that I am very passionate about and to incorporate them into my further study of Law is an opportunity that I would take. I feel I am ready to take on the challenge and work hard because I have the commitment and dedication required. In addition, I have excellent oral and written skills and worked from age 14 to age 16 in a lighting showroom dealing with phone calls amongst other domestic tasks. I volunteered at <a charity shop> for the Summer of 2012 which involved price tagging and dealing with customers face-to-face and so I can cope with the pressure and initiative that is necessary. When I was aged 14 I did work experience at Merseyside Police for a week with three units: the Dog Support Unit, the Tactical Team and the Forensics unit. I gained a unique insight into the life of criminals and gave me an advanced knowledge of the mentality behind why criminals commit crimes and the desperation that some have to survive through crime when with the Tactical Team. The Dog Support Unit showed me the method behind the collection of evidence in cases. In September 2013 I also visited Liverpool Crown Court and observed the sentencing of four cases. Two cases were sexual assaults and two assault cases. I gained invaluable experience from this as it showed me the process of the law and how it was applied to the defendants. An interest of mine is to read about cases that have been in the news such as the Brink's-Mat robbery of 1983 and the Great Train Robbery of 1963. The life of Kenneth Noye, one of the most prolific criminals in British history, is also of personal interest to me. He simply could not stop breaking the law from his very early teens and throughout the rest of his life. Even once released after a 14 year sentence for the famous Brink's-Mat robbery he murdered a 21 year old male on a slip road in a fit of road rage and will spend the rest of his life in prison because of his inability to control himself. I believe that university is my next step into the world of Law.
