  1. "Come on, Hisao! That guy that passed you was at least sixty!"
  2.
  3. And probably still had a better heart than mine.
  4.
  5. "You're still alive! Keep moving!"
  6.
  7. I may be alive, but I'm pretty sure my legs died about three miles back. I'm doing terrible things to their corpses.
  8.
  9. "Look, the eleven mile marker! Just think, you only gotta d one, then one, then point one, then boom! You're done!"
  10.
  11. I've got a boom for you...
  12.
  13. "Pick up the pace, Hisao! RIN could walk a half-marathon! You can do better!"
  14.
  15. I continued to silently wish that the demon behind me would meet with a terrible fate. Suddenly, a sharp pain across my butt made me yelp. She... she spanked me!
  16.
  17. "Get that ass in gear, Hisao!" she cheered, clearly enjoying herself far too much. She sprinted ahead of me backwards, grinning the whole way.
  18.
  19. "You shouldn't have done that," I grumbled at her. She just giggled, supremely unconcerned with any threats she knew damn well I didn't have the energy to carry out. Not that I would if I could anyway.
  20.
  21. I more limped than jogged over the finish line. Emi cheered for me continuously, having sprinted ahead the last mile so she could do just that. I managed a tired smile as I nearly collapsed, doubled over and panting.
  22.
  23. "No, no!" she scolded. "If you just stop, your legs will hurt more! You need to walk a little to cool down, and stretch afterward."
  24.
  25. "Ugh..." I groaned. "I don't know if you saw me coming in, but I think I've done the cooldown walk already... Why did you make me do this, Emi?"
  26.
  27. Whoa, DAMN that is an angry glare.
  28.
  29. "When we first met, you couldn't so much as do one lap around the track without giving up," she said sharply. "The next time, you pushed yourself a little and nearly died. Look at yourself, Hisao. You ran 13.1 miles today, and your only complaint is achy legs. Not an irregular heartbeat. Not NO heartbeat. Achy legs. You just outran your disability."
  30.
  31. I looked at her, a little in awe, and then down at myself. I held a hand to my chest for a moment. Steady. A little fast, but... steady. After 13.1 miles. I looked back at her, feeling myself beam with pride.
  32.
  33. "Don't let a damn thing get you down, Hisao," she finished with a megawatt grin that encapsulated all I loved about her. "Not after today. Never again."
  34.
  35. Never again.
