- LXDE desktop: Rough video verbal script …
- < note these words are approximately … exact words may change during audio/video “recording” >
- Hi
- Welcome to openSUSE-11.3 with the new LXDE Lightweight X Desktop Environment.
- While available before to earlier openSUSE versions as a community package, LXDE now available for the 1st time as part of an officially packaged Novell release in openSUSE-11.3.
- Today I hope to provide you a quick look at this Lightweight desktop.
- First, lets look at this login screen, which illustrates some of the functionality of LXDM the LX Display Manger.
- Lets go ahead and log on to LXDE. … Insert my USER NAME. Type in my PASSWORD.
- And there we are. Now was that fast? Or was that fast ? That was Fast !!
- As you can see from that, LXDE is a Lightweight desktop environment.
- Lets check some items on the lower panel … Application launcher, File Manager, Firefox, Iconify all desktop icons, currently it has two possible desktops available, we will change that later.
- Over on the right hand side the clipboard, and the speaker, and one can also log out from this icon there.
- Now if you want, you can have an extra panel. I'll put one on the top. You can adjust its colour here.
- For this demo, we will stick with just the lower panel, so lets delete this new 2nd panel.
- If you wish to better “tune” the appearance of this panel, right click on the panel, go to “panel settings”, and under geometry we will make this panel a bit wider.
- I am increasing the height right now, but the icons are now too small. So lets just increase the size of the icons that are on the panel.
- Of course, one could alternatively make everything smaller if they preferred small over fat.
- There are some other settings here as well in Panel Preferences that one can adjust if one wishes. For this demo, lets leave them at default for now. But clearly there is the opportunity to tune and tweak the desktop environment if one wishes.
- Lets now take a look at the LX control center, so as to tune the desktop differently. So go to SYSTEM > PREFERENCES > and select LXDE control center. There are many neat choices here, such as controls for LX Desktop Manger, Configure OpenBox, configure one's mouse and keyboard, set one's wallpaper, set one's screen saver … tuning the desktop appearance with different themes. One can tune the PCManFM file manager, and there are controls for refreshing the panel, installing software, going to Yast, controlling the Session Settings (ie applications that are launched when starting the desktop) and tuning the monitor settings.
- For now, lets go to Configure Open Box. One can also enter Configure Open Box from SYSTEM > Preferences, … but we will enter it via LXDE's control center.
- OK, lets go to desktops, and increase the number of desktops from two to four. If you look below, you can see the change and we have 4 now.
- Another example – lets go to “theme” and change the theme – lets select “clear looks – olive” …
- Another example – lets change some window characteristics – for example lets change the active title window to a much larger “solid - clunkier” look … good for old eyes like mine :)
- … and lets look at some of the other options here … we have already seen themes, appearance, and desktops … so there are choices …
- Ok, lets close the Openbook Configuration Manger window and look at some other features …
- Lets now look at putting some icons on the desktop. Especially ones that one may wish to use quite often. For example, YaST. So lets go to SYSTEM > Administration, and find YaST … there is YaST, right click, and add to desktop … There it is.
- Next, lets add a file manager to the desktop. Right click, Add to desktop.
- Lets also add a terminal program. In this case, LXTerminal. Right click. Add to desktop.
- There we go.
- Ok lets look at these apps. Go to the file manager. Left click. And as you can see this is PCManFM version 0.9.3 which is pretty new. Lots of neat features.
- For example … in addition to just accessing files, if you click on Applications, you can see one can also launch applications from PCManFM. For example under Accessories, …. or Graphics … or Internet … or Sound and Video … in my case I have some Packman packager packaged multimedia apps installed here … …. then there are various system tools, and system itself.
- Also the trash is located here (as opposed to being a desktop icon).
- Lets go back to my /home folder … and if one wanted to show the hidden files …. view > show hidden …. and there they all … and its all pretty simple …
- < close pcmanfm >
- Lets look at LXTerminal … and its version 0.1.7 …. one can tune the fonts in the terminal window . Under EDIT > PREFERENCES and lets go for a larger bolder font .. Again, simple. Straight forward and fast.
- This is a light weight desktop.
- What else?
- Ahh … wall paper … lets put a more fancy back ground. Lets go back to the LXDE Control Center to change that ….
- So SYSTEM > PREFERENCES > LXDE Control Center > and choose Set Wallpaper …
- now I previous put some wall papers I liked under /home/oldcpu/wallpapers. … so we will go there … navigate to the directory, choose my wall paper … select wall paper … and le volila. … lets show the entire window … and there is my wall paper. … ok, … lets close this …
- There are many more functions you can have fun and tune.
- As for minimal requirements, I recommend an absolute minimum of 128MBytes of RAM with openSUSE. It will run at that speed, albeit when launching applications such as firefox, it will be slow because firefox itself requires more than 128MBytes of RAM, and one will be heavily into swap, with the harddrive swap making up the RAM deficiency.
- Better performance is 256Mbytes, where performance is fast. If you have 512MBytes of RAM, you can have many applications open at once, with fast performance. I think LXDE really shines with respect to the heavier KDE and Gnome in the RAM region from 128MB to 512MB , and if you have a PC with only that much RAM, then I recommend you give this LXDE desktop serious consideration.
- So that is the end of this demo, I hope that gives you a good flavour as to what this looks like.
