- Homework: find all 17 prepositional phrases on p. 128 and then answer the questions in part B
- Also, read p. 129
- (p. 110 from yesterday’s handout explains the idea of space order)
- Some prepositional phrases are inside others:
- 2 (In the long center drawer (under my computer)), you can find…
- “under my computer” tells you more about “drawer”
- “in the long…” tells you more about “you can find”
- But it’s also possible to have two separate prepositional phrases next to each other:
- 9 I have a variety (of things) (in my desk).
- “of things” tells you about “variety”
- “in my desk” tells you about “I have…”
- ---
- p. 128 part B - the rest of the questions
- 2) 2, 3, 4, 6
- 3) 7, 9
- 4) sentences 1-3: left to right
- sentences 4-9: top to bottom
- (We can say that these two together are clockwise space order.)
- (The opposite is counter-clockwise.)
- ---
- p. 129 - Prepositional phrases for time and location can usually go at the beginning or the end of a sentence.
- If there is a complete sentence after the prepositional phrase, use a comma:
- Before a big exam, get eight hours of sleep.
- In the park, there are several kinds of trees.
- If I want to tell you the location of the subject (with an intransitive verb), I don’t need a comma
- (and the verb can come before the subject):
- In the corner is a comfortable chair.
- Above her piano hangs a picture of Beethoven.
- ---
- p. 131 - Combine the information into one sentence.
- 2 There’s a cracked green chalkboard on the wall. (age/condition before color)
- Order of adjectives:
- Opinion
- Size
- Age (and condition)
- Shape
- Color
- Origin
- Material
- ---
- Homework: p. 131-132 - Combine the other sentences.
- Also choose a place in your home country that you would like to describe in a paragraph.
