A journey can be expressed in a multitude of ways, being either classified into 'inner' , 'physical' or 'spiritual'. The poem ‘’ We All Are Only Here’’ by ‘Francis Duggan’ depicts a metaphoric journey relating to death. It shows the equality of humans and furthermore power and status that only exists in our society because we allow it to, It explains that after death there is no status, no power ...only equality amongst every other creature that has passed on.
The poem is composed in a way that makes it seem like it was narrated, as if the author is standing here with us. The poem has the undertone of death and the sadness gives greater value to it.
He states ‘Humans are not that different to other life forms
Since we too are only born for to die’’
He also mentions
‘The reaper is the champion egalitarian
For he treats everybody as the same
He does not bow to president or monarch
Or draw distinctions between anonymity and fame.’
The quotes are representing Duggan’s idea that when it comes to dieing, everything that we consider valuable, ends up being nothing, as when we die there is no difference between being rich, poor, famous etc.
