  1. There won't be any singing of "Send in the Clowns" when the Colorado Rockies debut in April for their first major-league season in their new uniforms.
  2.
  3. The Rockies are sticking with the traditional look, with only their purple pinstripes the least bit risque.
  4.
  5. "We didn't want to put out a bunch of clowns," general manager Bob Gebhard said after the Rockies' uniforms were displayed for the first time yesterday at Mile High Stadium. "We wanted to be traditional and yet with the silver and the purple to highlight the uniform, I think we did a good job."
  6.
  7. The uniform models arrived for the unveiling in front of almost 50,000 fans in Mile High Stadium in true Western fashion in a horse-drawn stagecoach.
  8.
  9. Joe Niekro, pitching coach for the Bend Rockies and a former major-league pitcher, wore the gray road uniform. Former pitcher Pat Dobson, now a Rockies scout, wore the alternate Sunday scheme and Rockies hitting instructor Amos Otis, a former major-league outfielder, wore the white home uniform.
  10.
  11. The outfits featured a silver CR on their purple hose. The white home uniform seemed to get the most reaction.
  12.
  13. Gebhard said the team tried to avoid flash to the point of not going to purple shoes, electing to stay with traditional black.
  14.
  15. "I like the uniform," Gebhard said. "I think it's sharp. We didn't invent the wheel in trying to design a uniform. It's a typical, classy uniform."
  16.
  17. Gebhard said the use of an alternate Sunday uniform for home games was to give the players a chance to look forward to wearing something different.
  18.
  19. The alternate Sunday uniform uses a black jersey with the white, purple pinstriped pants.
  20.
  21. "We were able to put out three different uniforms, taking some of the tradition of baseball with the pinstripe and yet adding the purple stripes instead of black for our personal touch of class," Gebhard said. "I'm very impressed with all of them." Peever power
