  5. This room is moderated by bluelightning. All messages are forwarded to

  7.
  8. /b22rian claps/
  9.
  10. *thepokemaniac: *ok
  11.
  12. soccerderek joined the room.
  13.
  14. *thepokemaniac: *thank you for coming once again
  15.
  16. *thepokemaniac: *now lets start our city by downloading a few things
  17.
  18. *thepokemaniac: *one of my favorite terrain mods is the columbus terrain
  19. mod, it can be found on the STEX
  20.
  21. *thepokemaniac: *you may use any tree pack that you wish,
  22.
  23. *thepokemaniac: *now once you have both those things,
  24.
  25. *thepokemaniac: *open a nice flat large city tile
  26.
  27. *thepokemaniac *that mod has depdencies
  28.
  29. *pagenotfound: *i advise any CP mod
  30.
  31. *b22rian: *really i can never find columbus
  32.
  33. *thepokemaniac *i know
  34.
  35. *thepokemaniac: *remember, the mod has dependencies
  36.
  37. *thepokemaniac: *so make sure you download those, or else it is a
  38.
  39. disaster
  40.
  41. *b22rian: *i finally found it on some other web site
  42.
  43. *thepokemaniac: *now once your city tile has loaded,
  44.
  45. *thepokemaniac: *start playing around with the mountain terraforming
  46.
  47. tool
  48.
  49. *thepokemaniac:
  50. *http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/6755/edwardsnationalparkfeb2.png
  51. <http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/6755/edwardsnationalparkfeb2.png>
  52.
  53. *thepokemaniac: *here is an example
  54.
  55. *thepokemaniac: *remember, if you want a nice mountain,
  56.
  57. *thepokemaniac: *make it a large and broad area
  58.
  59. un1 joined the room.
  60.
  61. *pagenotfound: *you can hold shift if you want to make it really large
  62.
  63. *meister1235: *or ctrl to make it small
  64.
  65. *thepokemaniac: *now once you have a nice mountain base,
  66.
  67. *thepokemaniac: *well first off let me say,
  68.
  69. *thepokemaniac: *think of mountains as a cake
  70.
  71. *thepokemaniac: *you need to have layers
  72.
  73. *thepokemaniac: *layer your mountains and divide them into sections to
  74. make them look nice
  75.
  76. *yoshiisland: *by layers do you mean many varying elevations or
  77. different "bumps" in the mountainside?
  78.
  79. soccerderek left the room. (Going to Social Lobby)
  80.
  81. *thepokemaniac: *now everyone just wait a second, technical
  82.
  83. difficulties...
  84.
  85. *thepokemaniac: *yoshiisland: yes that is exactly what i mean :D
  86.
  87. *pagenotfound: *like steps
  88.
  89. *thepokemaniac: *once you have some nice bases,
  90.
  91. *thepokemaniac:
  92. *http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/3483/edwardsnationalparkapr1.png
  93. <http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/3483/edwardsnationalparkapr1.png>
  94.
  95. *thepokemaniac: *it can look like this
  96.
  97. *thepokemaniac: *just add layers and layers on top of them
  98.
  99. *b22rian: *:O
  100.
  101. *thepokemaniac: *make sure they are not very symmetrical
  102.
  103. *thepokemaniac: *it helps to add realism
  104.
  105. *pagenotfound: *assymetrical is more natural
  106.
  107. *yoshiisland: *the rugged edges tool looks like your friend there lol
  108.
  109. *b22rian: *thepokemaniac: hmm is that snow on top or just white rock ?
  110.
  111. *thepokemaniac: *that is snow
  112.
  113. *shadow_assassin: *just a question - is this for building a ski resort
  114. or just a national park with nice mountains?
  115.
  116. *thepokemaniac: *part of the terrain mod :D
  117.
  118. *thepokemaniac: *shadow_assassin: just a national park
  119.
  120. *philscafe: *pagenotfound: do you have some tips about the "shape" of
  121. mountain ranges... being a future geologist and all?
  122.
  123. *b22rian: *thepokemaniac: ok that was my next question if it was part of
  124. the terrain mod, the snow part
  125.
  126. *pagenotfound: *most CP mods have snow at high elevation
  127.
  128. *yoshiisland: *yeah you can download snow mods from the STEX or SC4D
  129. LEX, and set them up to have the snow appear at certain elevations
  130.
  131. *thepokemaniac: *now lets start learning about mountain passes
  132.
  133. *thepokemaniac: *they are a common site in most mountain ranges
  134.
  135. *shadow_assassin: *you can even modify the snow cap level yourself
  136. though this is for another day :P
  137.
  138. *thepokemaniac: *as i showed in the last picture,
  139.
  140. *thepokemaniac: *i have 2 large mountains, and a line of smaller ones in
  141. the center
  142.
  143. *pagenotfound: *try to make mountains steepest toward the peak and lower
  144. slopes toward the flanks
  145.
  146. *thepokemaniac: *lets manipulate those to make them navigable ;)
  147.
  148. *thepokemaniac:
  149. *http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7389/edwardsnationalparkapr2.png
  150. <http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7389/edwardsnationalparkapr2.png>
  151.
  152. *thepokemaniac: *go to the area where you want your pass
  153.
  154. *thepokemaniac: *and then in the "lower terrain" terraforming options,
  155.
  156. *thepokemaniac: *select steep valley
  157.
  158. *thepokemaniac: *then once you have a nice small depression between
  159.
  160. ridges,
  161.
  162. *pagenotfound: *remember to not go overboard
  163.
  164. *thepokemaniac: *make it a bit jagged with the mountain OR steep hill
  165.
  166. option
  167.
  168. *thepokemaniac: *but remember, just use those a little bit
  169.
  170. *pagenotfound: *you can adjust the size and strength
  171.
  172. *thepokemaniac: *now in one corner of the map,
  173.
  174. *b22rian: *adjust with control and shift again ?
  175.
  176. *yoshiisland: *I usually don't make a very large/strong radius when
  177. terraforming unless I'm placing trees or leveling terrain
  178.
  179. *pagenotfound: *yea thats it
  180.
  181. *thepokemaniac: *now in one corner of the map that is still level,
  182.
  183. *thepokemaniac: *that is going to be our small valley, or mountain
  184.
  185. meadow
  186.
  187. *thepokemaniac: *from here, i will show 2 options of what you can do
  188.
  189. ther
  190.
  191. *thepokemaniac: **there
  192.
  193. daso joined the room.
  194.
  195. *thepokemaniac: *the first thing: you can put a small town there
  196.
  197. *pagenotfound: *is this a hanging valley?
  198.
  199. *thepokemaniac: *this is usually what i do
  200.
  201. *thepokemaniac: *in the corner of your map,
  202.
  203. *thepokemaniac: *it should still look something like this:
  204.
  205. *thepokemaniac:
  206. *http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/8560/edwardsnationalparkapr4.png
  207. <http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/8560/edwardsnationalparkapr4.png>
  208.
  209. *thepokemaniac: *flatten out those edges of the mountain with the
  210. "smoothen" tool
  211.
  212. *thepokemaniac: *now once you have a nice valley and it is to your
  213.
  214. liking,
  215.
  216. *pagenotfound: *this will help to make foothills if u so desire
  217.
  218. *thepokemaniac: *add some trees, a 2 lane road, and some windmills
  219.
  220. *b22rian: *i like the idea of foothills yes
  221.
  222. *thepokemaniac: *then some streets and a water tower, along with some
  223.
  224. shops
  225.
  226. *thepokemaniac: *and you have a small town!
  227.
  228. *thepokemaniac:
  229. *http://img694.imageshack.us/i/edwardsnationalparkapr1.png/
  230. <http://img694.imageshack.us/i/edwardsnationalparkapr1.png/>
  231.
  232. *thepokemaniac:
  233. **http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/3483/edwardsnationalparkapr1.png
  234. <http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/3483/edwardsnationalparkapr1.png>
  235.
  236. *thepokemaniac: *sorry, the second image is the correct one
  237.
  238. *thepokemaniac: *now for your second option,
  239.
  240. *b22rian: *yup ideal for this set up
  241.
  242. *thepokemaniac: *you may add a small river
  243.
  244. *thepokemaniac: *now since this corner of the map is small, you may have
  245. to scrunch it in
  246.
  247. *thepokemaniac: *the 3 tools you need to use are:
  248.
  249. *thepokemaniac: *Smooth
  250.
  251. *thepokemaniac: *Valley
  252.
  253. *thepokemaniac: *and Steep Valley
  254.
  255. *pagenotfound: *you can use ploppable water
  256.
  257. *pagenotfound: *for rivers
  258.
  259. *thepokemaniac: *or use ploppable water, as i sometimes do
  260.
  261. *yoshiisland: *I would zoom in to level 4-5 and hold shift whilst making
  262. the river so it's not too big and I don't accidently destroy my
  263.
  264. developments
  265.
  266. *thepokemaniac: *as pagenotfound said
  267.
  268. *pagenotfound: *yes
  269.
  270. *thepokemaniac: *now you can make the river however you choose, as wide,
  271. as small, however many tributaries ;)
  272.
  273. *thepokemaniac: *rivers are a great way to add some personality to
  274. mountain areas
  275.
  276. *thepokemaniac: *then, where there is fresh water,
  277.
  278. *b22rian: *agreed :)
  279.
  280. *thepokemaniac: *there are trees
  281.
  282. *thepokemaniac: *so add a nice variety of trees, a good combo of colors
  283.
  284. *thepokemaniac: *different shades of green add some nice realism
  285.
  286. *yoshiisland: *there's also some waterfall tools available from pegasus
  287. and jeronij that can really add character to your natural waterways
  288.
  289. *thepokemaniac: *http://www.bigskywarriorranch.com/photogallery2/GNP.jpg
  290. <http://www.bigskywarriorranch.com/photogallery2/GNP.jpg>
  291.
  292. *thepokemaniac: *as you can see,
  293.
  294. *thepokemaniac: *in this picture there are mostly pine trees
  295.
  296. *b22rian: *yoshiisland: thanks , afterwards we can maybe pass along
  297. helpful links
  298.
  299. *pagenotfound: *as well as ploppable rocks
  300.
  301. *thepokemaniac: *but it doesnt hurt to have some deciduous trees
  302.
  303. *thepokemaniac: *however,
  304.
  305. shadow_assassin left the room. (Going to Social Lobby)
  306.
  307. *thepokemaniac: *where you have snow it is not a good idea to have trees
  308.
  309. *thepokemaniac: *think of that as your tree line
  310.
  311. *thepokemaniac: *trees should go up only a little past that
  312.
  313. *b22rian: *thepokemaniac: right
  314.
  315. *thepokemaniac: *well, i think its time for a few questions
  316.
  317. *thepokemaniac: *maybe a short intermission, 1 minute
  318.
  319. *bluelightning: *oh right
  320.
  321. This room is no longer being moderated.
  322.
  323. *pagenotfound: *//4 intermission//4
  324.
  325. *meister1235: *pagenotfound: lol
  326.
  327. *b22rian: *well on forming the mountains..
  328.
  329. *b22rian: *there is a special tool for this ?
  330.
  331. *yoshiisland: *yeah trees don't look too good with snow as ground cover
  332. as 90% of trees aren't modeled with snow on them. however there's snow
  333. mods available from pegasus but that'll change EVERYTHING to snow lol
  334.
  335. *thepokemaniac: *now one more thing, y'all can stay in intermission
  336.
  337. *wrightguy0: *//4 let's all go to the lobby, let's all go to the lobby,
  338. let's all go to the lobby and get ourselves some snacks //4
  339.
  340. *thepokemaniac: *but if anyone is interested,
  341.
  342. *b22rian: *ya i was actually looking into this yesterday, i kinda prefer
  343. i think some of these snow cap mods
  344.
  345. *thepokemaniac:
  346. *http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/5602/edwardsnationalparkmar1.png
  347. <http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/5602/edwardsnationalparkmar1.png>
  348.
  349. *thepokemaniac: *thats a good example of some foothills
  350.
  351. *un1: *I made a mountain, "Alpine" like map, did I do it correctly?
  352. http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=20872
  353. <http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=20872>
  354.
  355. *yoshiisland: *I wouldn't want all of my cities to have snow year round
  356.
  357. *thepokemaniac: *ok, ready to restart?
  358.
  359. *b22rian: *thepokemaniac: yup, very nicely done
  360.
  361. *thepokemaniac: *ok
  362.
  363. *b22rian: *sure..
  364.
  365. *thepokemaniac: *ready vince
  366.
  367. *un1: *What about my question? :|
  368.
  369. *bluelightning: *clear
  370.
  371. *yoshiisland: *un1: that's a good one
  372.
  373. *thepokemaniac: *un1: yes
  374.
  375. *thepokemaniac: *:P
  376.
  377. *un1: *thepokemaniac: Thanks :p
  378.
  379. *bluelightning: *Stand by
  380.
  381. *thepokemaniac: *ok
  382.

  385.
  386. *thepokemaniac: *welcome back everyone,
  387.
  388. *thepokemaniac: *now to the easy topic of naming your national park
  389.
  390. *thepokemaniac: *it can be named after you,
  391.
  392. *thepokemaniac: *a nearby city,
  393.
  394. *thepokemaniac: *a major mountain in the park,
  395.
  396. *thepokemaniac: *or a special person in RL or your SimCity
  397.
  398. *thepokemaniac: *in this case, i named mine after a person's last name
  399. in Real Life
  400.
  401. *wrightguy0: *what about a unique geological feature?
  402.
  403. *thepokemaniac: *wrightguy0: or that
  404.
  405. *thepokemaniac: *anything you want
  406.
  407. *thepokemaniac: *i usually like to name mine after major mountains
  408.
  409. *thepokemaniac: *also, rivers/continental divides work too
  410.
  411. *b22rian: *alpine is someone you know ?
  412.
  413. *thepokemaniac: *b22rian: no, Edwards :P
  414.
  415. *b22rian: *oops :)
  416.
  417. *thepokemaniac: *and we will not go into that right now..
  418.
  419. *b22rian: *:X
  420.
  421. *thepokemaniac: *however, this next part of the seminar is on a more
  422. advanced topic
  423.
  424. *thepokemaniac: *if you think you want to stop now,
  425.
  426. *thepokemaniac: *feel free to leave :)
  427.
  428. un1 left the room. (Going to Social Lobby)

  430. un1 joined the room.
  431.
  432. rawr apples joined the room.
  433.
  434. *thepokemaniac: *however, if you are up for a challenge, this is a good
  435. thing to know
  436.
  437. *b22rian: *carry on..;)
  438.
  439. *thepokemaniac: *this is on Mountain Roads
  440.
  441. *thepokemaniac: *i tend to like to use the regular Maxis Road for this
  442.
  443. *thepokemaniac: *they are easy to use, and if you have NAM,
  444.
  445. *thepokemaniac: *you have some nice curves
  446.
  447. *pagenotfound: *i have an example pic
  448.
  449. *thepokemaniac: *ok sure :)
  450.
  451. *yoshiisland: *I might be able to dig some up as well
  452.
  453. *pagenotfound: *sometimes the curves dont work well on the craziest
  454.
  455. terrain
  456.
  457. *pagenotfound: *if thats the case try to at least "simulate" them
  458.
  459. *pagenotfound:

  462.
  463. like so
  464.
  465. *thepokemaniac: *ill let rob talk while i get the next pic ready
  466.
  467. *thepokemaniac: *pagenotfound: ooh, that is VERY nice rob
  468.
  469. *b22rian: *well
  470.
  471. *thepokemaniac: *reminds me a lot of Guatemala
  472.
  473. *b22rian: *how is that simulated exactly ?
  474.
  475. *bluelightning: *pagenotfound: thats like that one peru road :|
  476.
  477. *b22rian: *your saying this isnt a functional road right ?
  478.
  479. *pagenotfound: *bluelightning: i did say crazy lol
  480.

  488. not the most professional work but in this instance, I had to kind of
  489. zig-zag up the mountain as the terrain was very steep
  490.
  491. *philscafe: *actually, the NAM curves look best for mountain roads, IMO
  492.
  493. *pagenotfound: *sometimes the ploppable curves are a pain
  494.
  495. *bluelightning: *yoshiisland: damn.
  496.
  497.
  498. *thepokemaniac: *you do NOT ever want to see this,
  499.

  503.
  504. *thepokemaniac: *see how the road is jagged?
  505.
  506. *bluelightning: *thepokemaniac: urgh
  507.
  508. *pagenotfound: *ew
  509.
