  1. ##Performance
  2. XP: 3.5 / 5
  3. Vista: 3 / 5
  4. Windows 7: 4.5 / 5
  5.
  6. Tested by transfering a 1GB files. Vista had poor copy speeds in smaller file tests, XP came in second and Windows 7 beat both.
  7.
  8. ##Networking
  9. XP: 3.5 / 5
  10. Vista: 3 / 5
  11. Windows 7: 4 / 5
  12.
  13. If you got an XP or Vista computer, you have a less featured network interface, that's old and hard to get around and work with. Tested with transfer speeds, XP was close to the top speed but Windows 7 was significantly quicker at transferring the large files, along with its feature set.
  14.
  15. ##Security
  16. XP: 3 / 5
  17. Vista: 4 / 5
  18. Windows 7: 4.5 / 5
  19.
  20. There's no question that Windows Vista is more secure than XP, with UAC and other features. UAC can be annoying but in windows 7, it reduces the hassle of UAC and Security Center alerts, making Windows 7 the victor.
  21.
  22. ##Gaming
  23. XP: 4 / 5
  24. Vista: 3 / 5
  25. Windows 7: 4 / 5
  26.
  27. Windows XPs advantage of gaming seems to fall back as you get faster hardware, so if you have decent hardware, Windows 7 would marginally show the power of your hardware, where XP doesnt.
  28.
  29. ##Mobility
  30. XP: 3.5 / 5
  31. Vista: 2.5 / 5
  32. Windows 7: 4 / 5
  33.
  34. XP is lightweight making it suitable for mobility. Vistas performance issues and ineffective power features means it comes in last again. Windows 7 is the standout winner where it has relatively low system requirements and it has simplified networking.
  35.
  36. ##Entertainment
  37. XP: 3.5 / 5
  38. Vista: 4 / 5
  39. Windows 7: 3 / 5
  40.
  41. Windows 7 is the worst in this category, where TV tuners dont work and HD touchscreens suffer delays. Windows XP doesn't quite work as well as it should on a new system. Vista however runs reasonably well on budget PCs, and any performance issues wont be a big deal for an entertainment system.
  42.
  43. ##Reliability
  44. XP: 3 / 5
  45. Vista: 3.5 / 5
  46. Windows 7: 3 / 5
  47.
  48. ##Boot Times
  49. - Lower is better
  50.
  51. XP: 50
  52. Vista: 58
  53. Windows 7: 47
  54.
  55. ##Shutdown Times
  56. - Lower is better
  57.
  58. XP: 33
  59. Vista: 43
  60. Windows 7: 35
  61.
  62. ##Conclusion
  63. XP is old, but still compatible with most hardware and software, and all around ok. Vista has a great feature set, especially in error handaling and security. Windows 7 outdoes them both. Though it hasn't fixed everything it does show significant improvements over its predecessor.
