  1. There have been a lot of arguments around the issue that funding on pure science endeavours should be reduced and directed to more humanitarian science projects. This does seem logical since humanitarian projects directly impact the people. However, this is not a black and white issue. We haven't considered the indirect impact of pure science projects on our lives. I don't agree with the notion that funding should be reduced for pure science projects.
  2. Pure science projects have had a huge impact on our society. Space exploration has been around for a lot of time now. We've been exploring the space for questions that have always puzzled human mind. We haven't got any proof of extraterrestrial life yet. So, does that mean space exploration projects haven't yielded anything ? No. We were able to find helium-3 on moon. If properly harvested and used, H-3 can be the fuel for whole human civilization for a lot many years. We wouldn't have to depend on non renewable resources. We encountered this element only after we landed on moon. This can eradicate our energy problems and help humanity. So space exploration could have one of the largest impact on humanity.
  3. To add to it, the organisation, CERN, was founded to bombard atomic particles together and see the phenomenon that would explain how our universe came into being. This was pure physics project. But this project let to the invention of internet. Internet has connected the whole world fostering many more projects. Did we know that CERN would result in Internet ? No. And hence research in pure science is important too.
  4. Finally, remote sensing has helped save thousands of lives. For instance, even before a tornado is supposed to come, we are already aware of it. Before the tsunami waves reach the shore, we are already alerted by the system. This wouldn't have been possible if enough research in sensors and electronics wasn't done. Research in pure science projects have helped us understand fundamental principles about our world and how the things around us work. This has helped us innovate things and create a better world for ourselves.
  5. It is true that humanitarian projects directly impact society, but many times pure science projects have had a huge impact on society. It seems that investing in pure science researches and projects doesn't have a direct impact. But on deeper analysis of the impact these projects/researches have had on humanity, we can be sure that funding shouldn't be reduced for such pure science projects.
