kainland mini: summoner's pact experiments

[15:17:42 ]* Amaryllis gathers her various equipment then and assembles it in her room - the measurement device with mist, lifestream and magicite; the glasses with lenses crafted from Madain Sari's sand; and the start of her experimental instrument to manipulate the Pact the way Gemini do - and then goes shuffling through the Stray to find wherever Noah happens to be.
[15:18:51 ][Kain] Noah is... currently messing around with the inner workings of the two-seater miniairship, which is in the stray's quite small cargo bay.
[15:20:07 ][Amaryllis] "Hello Noah." Ammy stoops down next to him, glancing over the miniship. "What are you working on?"
[15:20:09 ][Kain] He's got his sleeves rolled up and his jacket and scarf off, currently doing some tinker work while laying on a sliding board.
[15:21:48 ][Kain] Noah: "Hm?" he slides out from under it, smiling. His face and arms are covered in engine grease. "Oh, I was just trying to adjust this for a smoother flight. All these years of tinkering with the Athenaeum Stray to keep it in the air, but I couldn't really afford to experiment..."
[15:22:32 ][Kain] He laughs. "I figured I may as well try my hand. Did you need something, love?"
[15:24:15 ][Amaryllis] "You could turn this area into a more general workshop, could you not? Then you could tinker to your heart's content. Ah, but yes, I did have a question. Has there ever been a case of an Egg of Tales forming a pact with a summoner, even an incomplete one?"
[15:25:40 ][Kain] Noah thinks on that a bit. "I've never heard of it, exactly, but they do often exhibit traits that one would normally associate with full eidolons... I imagine it isn't outside of the realm of possibility once enough of a change has occured. Why?"
[15:28:18 ][Amaryllis] "I had been thinking about how to best study and change the Summoner's Pact, but with Garnet indisposed, I cannot get access to a genetic summoner to study unless I can schedule a time with Regent Cid to see Eiko."
[15:28:56 ][Amaryllis] "So," Ammy pauses reaches up and twirls a lock of hair between her fingers. "I figured the next best thing might be to try to form a Pact myself to study it."
[15:29:09 ][Amaryllis] *pauses and reaches
[15:30:28 ][Kain] Noah seems a bit surprised, but nods. "Well, that might be possible, you've made a partial transformation... were you thinking of asking me to be your summoner?"
[15:31:42 ]* Amaryllis brushes her hair back and lets her hand fall. She stares at Noah and raises the corner of her mouth in a slight smile, as if to say 'who else?'.
[15:33:41 ][Kain] He chuckles a bit, blushing. "I suppose that was a bit of a dumb question. Nevertheless, that is quite a bit of trust, and I would be honored."
[15:35:29 ][Amaryllis] "Is it so embarrassing?" Ammy grins wide and puts her hands on Noah's cheeks. "You're blushing, dear."
[15:36:50 ][Kain] Noah brushes aside your hands and looks even more flustered. "You are enjoying teasing me so, don't you?" he says, but he's smiling.
[15:38:03 ][Kain] He then takes your hands in his. "Give me a moment to get cleaned up and we'll try this out right away."
[15:38:04 ][Amaryllis] "Maybe." Ammy stands again and backs up a step. "Take some time to get cleaned up. I shall be in our room where I've put the equipment when you're ready."

[15:40:34 ][Kain] Noah hurries out to wash himself up.
[15:40:40 ]* Amaryllis shuffles off to her room to wait and check on the equipment again, humming contentedly as she goes.
[15:42:41 ][Kain] After a minute there's a knock on the door.
[15:42:54 ][Amaryllis] "Come in."
[15:43:37 ][Kain] Noah lets himself in, still sans jacket and scarf, his sleeves still rolled up, but much cleaner and carefully groomed. He seems to have put on some cologne to to counter the smell of the oil.
[15:44:05 ][Kain] Noah: "Well, well, you have a bit of a setup here..." he seems impressed.
[15:44:49 ]* Amaryllis is cleaning a glasses lens and puts them back on her face, squinting. "I hope it is enough."
[15:48:22 ][Kain] Noah: "Very well then..." he closes the door behind himself and then... sort of sits on your bed.
[15:48:51 ][Kain] Noah: "Hm... I suppose the first step would be to try and offer me the terms of your pact..."
[15:49:45 ]* Amaryllis nods. "Ah, um...how does this work." Ammy mumbles as she shuffles up to Noah and takes his hands, dragging him off the bed into the center of the room. She takes a step back and closes her eyes. When they open again, they're a glowing golden yellow, and she's holding her knife and lantern in each hand.
[15:54:55 ][Amaryllis] "Noah Cromwell, Librarian of the 12 Gates, keeper of tales." Ammy ennunciates each word crisply, her voice loud and clear, but not quite a shout or yell. "I, Tonberry, stand before you with the power to weave new stories and to cut them away from the threads of fate. For every action there is reaction. Every story brought to ending fosters a new beginning. With tragedy comes triumph and with life comes death."
[15:56:52 ][Amaryllis] "My power is bound by this law of karma and balance, and so you shall be as well if you accept the responsibility to guide my blade and direct my light." Ammy pauses for a moment before repeating his name again. "Noah Cromwell, do you accept this Pact and pledge to act together henceforth as Summoner and Eidolon?"

[16:00:20 ][Kain] Noah nods without hesitation. "I, Noah Cromwell, will accept these binds and will devote myself to keeping the balance. I accept the mantle of summoner and pledge myself to you as you do so to me."
[16:01:48 ][Amaryllis] And...Ammy tries to reach out and form a Pact, however that works.

[16:05:17 ][Kain] It's sort of like... a natural reaction at this point, something that comes to you as easily as exhaling after taking a deep breath.
[16:07:38 ]* Amaryllis waits then as the process completes, trying to feel what's different.
[16:08:29 ][Kain] You feel a part of your metaphysical self latch onto Noah and not let go. Part of you seems to register Noah as your 'superior', in an odd fashion. It feels natural enough that you wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't been bracing yourself for any sort of changes. You're also more accutely -aware- of him. It's hard to describe, but you think you'd be able to pick him out of a room of similarly

[16:09:27 ][Kain] Noah: "I would have thought I'd be wearing my best when we got married." he jokes.
[16:10:57 ]* Amaryllis turns a light shade of pink at that. "Oh come on, this should feel like an important ceremony too, should it not?"
[16:11:25 ]* Amaryllis turns to the desk to hide her face as she regains composure, grabbing one of the Prism Potions and chugging it down.
[16:13:18 ][Kain] Noah: "It is." he agrees. "...Now what?"
[16:15:05 ]* Amaryllis adjusts her glasses nervously and tugs at the neck of her robe. She then pulls her nightstand more into the center of the room and sets her measurement device on it. "...Give me an order, I suppose."
[16:17:25 ][Kain] Noah considers for a moment, then offers, "Amaryllis, I want you to draw your knife across my finger, only deep enough to draw blood."
[16:20:23 ][Kain] You feel oddly compelled to do this. He must have a reason for it and it is not your place, really to question it, is it? Your hand flexes instinctively with knife in hand.
[16:22:14 ]* Amaryllis follows through, her eyes widening as she does. "That is rather terrifying." She says quietly. "Eidolons are accustomed to this?"
[16:23:37 ][Amaryllis] "Not like losing control to Kalissa, where it is just as if my body is not my own. It is as if the Pact is changing the way I think and view you and your order."
[16:24:17 ][Kain] You draw your knife across Noah's finger, and a little line of red appears. "What is it like?" he asks, worried. He easily cures the small wound with a spell, but nods when you answer. "I... see. That's very scary, yes."

[16:25:30 ][Amaryllis] "Then if someone were to make a pact with Kalissa..." Ammy frowns. "Give me another order, and...I shall try to resist this one."
[16:26:35 ][Kain] Noah: "Dance gracefully across the room, like if you were matching my steps at the ball."
[16:27:19 ][Kain] Noah: "Technically, you are both Tonberry. I don't think she'd be able to form a pact with someone else now. ...In fact, I might even be able to order her."
[16:27:40 ]* Amaryllis tenses up, trying to stay as still as possible. She just nods in response to Noah's second statement.

[16:31:48 ][Kain] You grip your knife tightly, and... you're not even sure of what you're doing, you just feel all sorts of emotions well up inside you, and... you stab yourself in your leg with the knife, before throwing it violently at your mirror. It shatters completely. Poor Noah is so startled that he stumbles backwards onto the floor. ...But you manage to regain control of yourself after several moments.
[16:31:59 ][Kain] The pain seems to have shocked you out of it.
[16:32:37 ][Kain] Noah: "A-amaryllis...? Are... are you... no, that's a dumb question. Here."
[16:32:38 ][Amaryllis] "Augh!" Ammy falls to the floor herself and clutches at her leg.
[16:32:55 ][Kain] He shakily crawls over to you, quickly whispering incantations of Curaga.
[16:33:05 ][Kain] Noah: "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, Amaryllis..."
[16:33:55 ][Kain] He's running his hands through your hair as he seals the wound from your knife. The pain subsides after a few moments.
[16:34:06 ][Amaryllis] "Don't apologize. It's not your fault, and it's not as if you knew this would happen." Ammy lets the healing magic settle in before trying to stand again.
[16:35:02 ][Amaryllis] "Bloody hell though, did my unconscious mind do that to shock me out of the pact's control? Or is that supposed to be a disincentive to resistance?"
[16:35:04 ][Kain] Noah: "What... even happened? Was that the backlash of trying to resist? I suppose I can see why the Alexandria's Calamity happened if it always provokes something like that..."
[16:35:48 ][Kain] After a moment of searching through your thoughts and checking your equipment... you think it was the former.
[16:37:29 ][Amaryllis] "I suppose when my conscious attempts at resistance failed, my mind stepped in to take more desperate measures." Ammy leans on Noah and tests her just-healed leg before standing on her own again. After a moment, her knife zips back to her hand as well, and she wipes it off with a cloth.
[16:37:54 ][Amaryllis] Does the equipment give any sort of insight as to where to jump in her aether realm to see a manifestation of her pact or get closer to study it?
[16:40:25 ][Kain] The mist shift around a bit and display a foggy sort of picture of the portrait of Noah, now pulsing with several glowing lines of power running around and through it, that you can see with your new lenses.
[16:42:10 ]* Amaryllis turns lightly pink again as she sees this. She hasn't actually shown Noah that part of her aether realm yet.
[16:42:35 ][Amaryllis] "I...think I see where the pact has planted itself in my realm." She says slowly and with some hesitance.
[16:43:04 ][Kain] Noah: "Should we take a closer look?" he walks over to see, himself.
[16:43:39 ]* Amaryllis gives Noah a small nod.
[16:45:37 ][Kain] He seems a bit confused when he peers at the device himself.
[16:47:13 ][Amaryllis] "L-let's just go in." Ammy stammers as she sets her lantern down in front of the device and reaches for the bottle of mist.
[16:48:26 ][Amaryllis] "I, Tonberry, the Inquisitor call upon the tales of old to cast open this gate of the immortal legend!" She says loudly as she pours the mist over her lantern.

[16:50:46 ][Kain] You appear in your aether realm, alongside Noah. You're of course, in the ornate brown robes and mask of your trance outfit.
[16:52:12 ][Kain] Noah is dressed...
[16:54:02 ][Kain] He's dressed in nothing so intelligent as his scholar's outfit, but rather a sort of black set of robes with a large satchel being hoisted over his right arm. He looks down and flusters a bit as he realizes something.
[16:54:29 ][Amaryllis] "Is something the matter, dear?"
[16:54:36 ][Kain] Also, you happen to be in the room of portraits.
[16:55:20 ][Kain] Noah: "These clothes... it's just. This is what I wore as a boy when studying under the previous Librarian."
[16:56:46 ][Amaryllis] "They must be important to you then." Ammy shuffles over and straightens them up for Noah, then reaches up to brush his face with her hand. "Haven't explored those memories for a while? Do you need a moment?"
[16:56:58 ][Kain] Noah: "It's not a problem, just a tad awkward."
[16:57:07 ][Kain] Noah looks around.
[16:57:51 ][Kain] In your vision, the entire portrait room has become a series of glyphs and lines centered around the shrine of Noah. Even without looking through the glasses, the spotlights seem brighter than ever.
[16:59:21 ]* Amaryllis slides her glasses down for a moment to compare how it looks through and without them, then resumes focusing on the center of the glyphs. "Can you give me another two orders? A simpler one, and then one that is more complex."
[17:01:04 ][Kain] Noah: "Explain to me what this room and... that is all about." he points to the the shrine.
[17:01:20 ][Kain] He's clearly pretty flustered, turning a dark shade of red.
[17:02:05 ][Amaryllis] "W-well, um..." Ammy turns pretty red in response.
[17:02:15 ][Kain] Pulses of energy begin to flow out of the portrait and throughout the labyrinth.
[17:02:41 ][Kain] You feel a building pressure to explain everything, even the diary here.
[17:05:03 ][Amaryllis] "This is the metaphorical center of my realm, with portraits representing the people important to me and my being." Ammy's explanation becomes smoother under the influence of the Pact. "Those who I have killed under Tonberry's influence, my friends and allies, and of course, the love of my life." Her face reddens even as she continues. "It is a shrine to you, to which I have dedicated gifts and poetry."
[17:06:02 ]* Amaryllis turns to face the wall after her explanation is done.
[17:07:21 ][Kain] You feel his arms wrap around you from behind and hold you a second. "I can only hope whatever may lie in my own aether realm, what exists of it as a human being, could be even half as flattering."
[17:09:05 ][Amaryllis] "The poetry is really bad and written by my drunken unconscious mind and not very flattering actually." Ammy babbles quietly as she's hugged, squirming a little.
[17:10:42 ][Kain] Noah laughs. "I'm sure it's fine. You needn't be embarassed. Anyway..."
[17:12:00 ][Amaryllis] "Those pulses of energy...I suppose those are what deliver your orders or give them power."
[17:14:18 ][Kain] Noah lets you go after a moment, and then states, "Begin your current daily exercise regimen at one and a half times speed, while reciting Anthony and his father's lines upon meeting each other in Act 5 of Melodies of Life. Cast Blind on Lone Wolf's picture every fiffteenth word."
[17:14:39 ][Kain] Noah: "...I hope that's complex enough."
[17:15:24 ][Kain] The glyphs seem to ripple with power, this time in several consecutive waves as each condition is set forth.
[17:15:39 ][Kain] It takes you a moment to process everything.
[17:16:33 ][Amaryllis] Can all of that be processed at once?
[17:16:38 ][Kain] It can.
[17:18:02 ]* Amaryllis doesn't try to resist - at first anyway, though she tries to watch the glyphs to see what kind of effect this all has.
[17:19:06 ][Kain] After the initial bit of pulsing, it seems nothing else happens, just like with the first order. You're simply expected to go through with it.
[17:20:24 ]* Amaryllis follows through to the best of her ability then, waiting a while before she begins to push against the order like before, trying to keep quiet, slowing down her exercises and eventually trying to stop them.
[17:21:58 ][Kain] At the very first bit of resistance, the lines of energy all over the wall pulse red and stop their flow. More pulses come out of the central glyph on Noah's portrait, meeting a counterflow of red energy pulsing. There are electric sparks as the two waves meet.
[17:22:34 ]* Amaryllis pushes harder against the order, watching the glyphs.
[17:23:08 ][Kain] The entirety of the room turns reds, and the sparks intensify. Noah, even though he doesn't have a pair of glasses like yours, seems to notice. "W-what's happening?"
[17:23:58 ][Amaryllis] Is Ammy able to push enough to say something and not keep reciting?
[17:24:45 ][Kain] You feel like you can, if nothing else because Noah was the one that asked.
[17:25:53 ][Amaryllis] "I'm trying to resist the order."
[17:27:41 ]* Amaryllis tries once more to push against the order and tries to throw it off completely.
[17:33:34 ][Kain] There's a loud ZAP as shockwaves rock the room, throwing both you and Noah to the floor.
[17:33:45 ][Kain] Not as deterrment, but as a sort of burst of effort.
[17:33:54 ][Kain] But... you successfully resist.
[17:34:43 ]* Amaryllis groans and crawls over to Noah. "Noah! Are you okay, dear?"
[17:35:15 ][Kain] Noah rubs his face a bit. "My rump is a tad bruised, that's all."
[17:35:51 ][Kain] Noah just shakes his head as he looks over at you. "Is it that much of an effort? Are you struggling with this?"
[17:36:26 ]* Amaryllis nods and sits up, stretching. "To be honest, I am surprised I can push against these orders at all, given what I have studied about the pact. Do you think there is any particular reason for it?"
[17:36:37 ][Kain] Noah thinks.
[17:37:03 ][Kain] Noah: "...maybe it's because I want you to succeed. The true disasters of ages past were a contest of wills between the summoner and the eidolon."

[17:38:39 ][Amaryllis] "That does make some sense, though if that is the case then it may be difficult to figure out from this information what to change about the pact."
[17:40:00 ]* Amaryllis stands and turns to face the glyphs and lines again.
[17:40:39 ][Kain] Noah: "We can't let something as simple as that stop us, can we?" he smiles and stands up.
[17:41:01 ][Amaryllis] She takes out her journal and scribbles out some of the runes from the Gemini rituals. She nods in response. "Let me see if I can loosen them even more now that I have seen what that might look like here."
[17:41:12 ]* Amaryllis reaches inward, toward Tonberry.
[17:41:51 ][Kain] . . .
[17:42:53 ][Kain] There are suddenly two of you in the room, though the other is keeping her mask firmly on. She is hunched over, her tail dragging against the stone floor. You can't see any sign of skin or details other than your green hair hanging from her hood.

[17:43:25 ]* Amaryllis jumps in surprise.
[17:43:33 ][Kain] He stumbles back a little, too.
[17:44:09 ][Kain] In her left hand is a lantern identical to Ammy's, but her right hand holds nothing.
[17:44:19 ][Kain] Tonberry: "Sssspeak."
[17:45:49 ]* Amaryllis nods in greeting and shows Tonberry the runes. "Can you help me test an attempt to change our Pact? To loosen its restraining hold without weakening the bond between Eidolon and Summoner."
[17:46:50 ][Kain] Noah just steps out of the way for the moment. The other you shuffles over, looking.
[17:48:05 ][Kain] Tonberry: "The book sssaid thessse are for disssplacing, from one place to another. What isss our target, and where isss itsss destination?"
[17:50:36 ]* Amaryllis thinks for a moment, scanning the lines with her eyes. "Could we not move those controlling bonds from the pact to ourselves? In a way such that we would attain greater self-control."
[17:54:18 ][Kain] Your other self nods. "Let it be done."
[17:55:01 ][Kain] How do you intend to lead this?
[17:56:35 ][Amaryllis] I guess Ammy would try to peel away the light from the center glyph, just the light that creates the pulses, and bring it to herself, into her lantern. She figures that would lead the connection with Noah intact but move where the control center is for the pulses of compelling energy.

[18:04:09 ][Kain] Your inner self follows only a millisecond behind you as you both raise your lanterns up. The two of you begin the ritual to invoke the power of Gemini, stepping around the circle almost in a sort of dance. The light on the walls dances too, pulsing oddly and flickering. The light then gets drawn towards you both, towards the middle of the circle that you scribbled down. You extend your
[18:04:09 ][Kain] lanterns towards the middle, and for a moment, the two lanterns are one, sharing the light.
[18:04:59 ][Kain] And then, just as quickly as it started, the room seems to dim, and Tonberry is gone. You're left with a somewhat brighter lantern, and though the lines of power on the walls and portrait are still there, they are not nearly as bright as before.
[18:05:35 ][Amaryllis] "Thank you." Ammy says, a bit surprised by the sudden disappearance.
[18:06:02 ][Kain] "No. Thank you..."
[18:06:14 ][Kain] Noah: "Is it done, then? Did you fix it?"
[18:07:19 ][Amaryllis] "What do you mean?" Ammy asks towards Tonberry's presence, confused by the disappearance. She then turns to Noah. "I...think so? Try giving me an order."

[18:08:18 ][Kain] Noah: "Tell me all of the reasons that you love in, in extraordinarily sappy detail."
[18:09:04 ][Kain] You feel... yeah, there it is again, the urge to just spill everything to him. But it's more like an itch instead of a need.
[18:09:37 ]* Amaryllis closes her eyes and focuses on resisting the itch.
[18:10:23 ][Kain] You think you'd feel very relieved if you just did what he asked! ...but when you start seriously resisting, the urge goes away like a bit of food washed down with ale.

[18:11:29 ]* Amaryllis sighs and relaxes. "It's still rather uncomfortable not to carry out an order, but it is easier to resist." She reaches out to Tonberry again for her thoughts and the answer to that question.
[18:11:55 ][Kain] Tonberry just slips to the back of your mind. You get the unconscious feeling that she is just as relieved as you are, for the same reasons.
[18:13:34 ][Amaryllis] "Interesting..." Ammy says to herself. "So then, shall we return, Noah?"
[18:13:51 ]* Amaryllis draws her knife and raises it in the usual way, ready to cut back to reality.
[18:14:27 ][Kain] Noah nods. "This may have solved the case for you at least, but I have a feeling it's going to be a harder journey to implement for all eidolon-kind."
[18:14:34 ][Kain] Noah: "Let's go back." he smiles.
[18:14:40 ][Kain] And... VWOOP
[18:14:46 ][Kain] You appear back in the ship.
[18:15:05 ][Kain] You seem to both be on the floor, oddly enough.
[18:15:42 ][Amaryllis] "Why are we on the floor? Usually no time seems to pass in the aether realm." Ammy stands up and then reaches a hand to help Noah up as well.
[18:17:42 ][Kain] Noah groans. "...I don't have an explanation for that myself." he's helped up.
[18:19:13 ][Amaryllis] "Are you alright?" Ammy once again straightens up Noah's clothes, then hugs him. "Thank you, both for helping me and being my Summoner. It means a lot to me. Shall I prepare us something to eat?"
[18:20:57 ][Kain] Noah smiles and nods. "By all means. Fix whatever you like, Amaryllis. I'm just happy to be here for you..."
