  1. Chapter 2 – ‘A Piece of Confusion‘
  2. “What in the… d, did I fall asleep?” Aden wondered to himself
  3. out loud, half unbelieving of the situation before him.
  4. The others in the classroom had all stopped mid-motion. No,
  5. to be precise, they were literally frozen in time. They didn’t so
  6. much as breathe!
  7. Suddenly, Aden’s heart thrummed, his blood pulsating through
  8. his veins in a molten fury. They felt on fire, and at the same
  9. time his body became extremely cold. The room, although
  10. lacking color, seemed extremely clear to him as the hidden
  11. war waged on within him.
  12. “Well, at any rate that’s about what I expected…” Somehow or
  13. another, the fox seemed to be laughing with a ‘ka ka ka’. She
  14. —at least, Aden assumed the fox was a she from its feminine
  15. voice—noticed his eyes darting around the room. She was
  16. obviously aware of what was going on.
  17. Although students of Haven Academy were prided on being
  18. advanced for their age, he was still just fourteen years old. It
  19. shouldn’t be a wonder that he was quite unsettled by what
  20. was happening.
  21. “Wha, what… no, who are you?” His voice started with a
  22. tremble, but grew more consistent as he continued. “What did
  23. you do to everyone!?”
  24. “Me? Oh, I’ve done nothing but wait for you to Awaken for
  25. years now. All of this,” the fox gestured towards the rest of
  26. the classroom with her muzzle, “was done by none other than
  27. you.” She ignored his first question.
  28. At a loss of what to say, all Aden could do was shake his head
  29. and shout, “It wasn’t me!”
  30. The fox seemed to find something amusing about his
  31. response.
  32. “Are you sure about that? Well, I thought you would react
  33. something like this.” Her body swayed slightly as she glanced
  34. around at the ones frozen in time. “Though this part… was
  35. unexpected.”
  36. “What happened? What’s going on!?” Though not quite as
  37. violent as before, his pulse still raged on. He was having
  38. trouble thinking clearly.
  39. “Your Awakening of course. It was supposed to happen when
  40. you were asleep, but it looks like you ignored the urge to
  41. sleep last night and woke up despite it. For so many to be
  42. roped in to this is truly unexpected.”
  43. Aden was all but lost at this point, listening to the white fox’s
  44. words. “Th, then,“ He tried to follow what was going on, but
  45. just as he began the fox resumed.
  46. “It’s almost time for this dream of yours comes to an end…”
  47. She turned around and leapt on to the floor. As she touched it,
  48. she began to disappear, leaving him behind with an addition.
  49. “… I’ll see you again soon, Master.”
  50. After the mysterious talking fox vanished, the war inside of
  51. him began to end with both the heat and cold merging
  52. together. He felt as though he’d just soaked in a warm bath,
  53. feeling extremely at ease despite the extreme sensations from
  54. a moment ago. His vision had also mostly returned to normal.
  55. Color returned to the world and everything resumed all at
  56. once. The sounds of the nineteen other classmates pulling out
  57. their pencils and scratch paper could be heard as everyone
  58. hastened to be ready.
  59. “Just… what was that? That white fox could speak, and what
  60. was up with everyone…” Aden thought to himself, dazed from
  61. the occurrence.
  62. When Miss Bells was about to hand out the exam to the
  63. students, she noticed Aden with his bag still open at his side
  64. and nothing on his desk.
  65. “Aden?” He didn’t respond, and after a few moments she tried
  66. again with a slight emphasis, “Aden?”
  67. He returned to his senses, remembering where he was.
  68. Forcing a smile, he responded, “M, Miss Bells! It’s nothing,
  69. nothing!”
  70. He hurriedly took out a scratch paper and the broken pencil.
  71. Next to him, David noticed the half-pencil and held an extra
  72. out for him, nudging Aden’s shoulder with it. “Psst… here.”
  73. The look on Aden’s face slightly concerned David, but
  74. ultimately put it aside. He knew that Aden tended to be weird
  75. about tests.
  76. “… Thanks.” He accepted the pencil and quietly resumed
  77. waiting to receive the exam papers from Miss Bells.
  78. Most of the room had quieted by now as everyone waited for
  79. Miss Bells’ instruction to begin. Most of the students dreaded
  80. mathematics and were either anxious or silently going over
  81. simple things, like ‘standard form’ or ‘point-slope form’ in
  82. hopes that the questions wouldn’t be too hard.
  83. Aden on the other hand had blanked. If someone were to peak
  84. into his mind right now they would find a black abyss, devoid of
  85. anything but the image of that strange fox from earlier. He
  86. couldn’t think of anything else, and almost didn’t hear the
  87. teacher’s instruction to start the exam.
  88. Tearing off the side that sealed the packet closed, he found
  89. everything to be completely… simple. Extraordinarily so.
  90. The height of water in a cylindrical glass jar of a ten centimeter
  91. radius was four centimeters tall; after gently adding a small
  92. stone to the jar the height of the water increased by two
  93. centimeters… There is a square whose corners all touch a
  94. single circle; the area of the square is three hundred square
  95. centimeters… Every question seemed to him like someone
  96. asked what color grass was; it was obviously green, right? The
  97. ease he had with conceptualizing these problems would have
  98. astounded everyone if they knew how he was going about
  99. answering the problems.
  100. The moment he saw the words, shapes and numerical symbols
  101. solidified in his vision on the page and reconstructed the
  102. problem with exact values calculated and displayed along its
  103. sides like a computer program would. He had always been
  104. good with logic-based work, but never like this.
  105. The person in question did not notice in the slightest that this
  106. was out of the ordinary for him, however. He continued to
  107. think of nothing but that fox. Her words, ‘Almost time for your
  108. dream to come to an end…’ and something about calling him
  109. ‘Master’ unsettled him.
  110. Before he noticed, fifteen minutes had passed and he had
  111. entirely completed the exam that should have taken nearly
  112. two hours. One should know that the sheer amount of proof
  113. work for each question alone should have taken at least forty
  114. minutes. His hand had not stopped writing since the moment
  115. he began, and his hand was slightly cramped.
  116. He stood up to turn in the exam and leave for lunch, not
  117. knowing the speed at which he completed the exam was more
  118. than six times faster than the average. The teacher, along with
  119. a few of the less studious students, glanced up at him with a
  120. confused look.
  121. “Here, Miss Bells.” Aden held out the packet and blank scratch
  122. paper to her.
  123. “… Aden, are you giving up on the exam? You know that you
  124. can’t make it up in the future.” She looked at him seriously,
  125. slowly raising her hand to take the packet.
  126. “Huh?” This threw Aden off slightly, and only now did he look
  127. up at the clock and notice the time. His eyes opened wide.
  128. After a moment of hesitation, “N, no, I finished.”
  129. Miss Bells raised an eyebrow. “Really now?” She clearly had
  130. her doubts.
  131. He handed it to her and bolted out of the door.
  132. As he left the room, she opened up the packet and her
  133. expression changed to one of astonishment. The problems
  134. weren’t merely completely filled out, but his strokes also
  135. lacked hesitation on the pages and—above all—were entirely
  136. correct! Let alone writing down entirely correct answers, she
  137. had never seen someone finish an end of year exam this
  138. quickly! She turned to call out to him, but he was already
  139. gone.
  140. Now in the hallway, Aden’s mind was entirely immersed in
  141. chaos.
  142. The time stop.
  143. The war in his body.
  144. The exam.
  145. That fox.
  146. Everything whirled through his mind like a tempest.
  147. “What happened to me!?”
